What we really want is to be freed from the bloodsucking comcast cable.. $70per month for superbasic loaded with double commercials. I disconnected 3 years ago and I really feel better...
Damn. They just came out with the new Roku 2 , and I'm really tempted... There are a lot of these settops out there that are just awful to use because the interfaces suck. I'm currently streaming Netflix on my Samsung BluRay player but it's slooooooow. The only thing the Roku doesn't have for me is local file playback like the Boxee or WD Live. If they'd come out with something that has all the great Roku bits PLUS local playback and a smooth AppleTV-esque interface i'd be all over it.
Blueray built in apps are just plain horrible. And the samsung blue ray i have can only grab movies from netflix that you have quere first from a computer. As far as these tv streamers, i use boxee, which is just plain great, even with the new ui, which i prefer the older one. the original roku ui just looked ugly to me. I havnt used the roku2 so cant comment on that.
@jman19mwi what if i want to watch movies in two different rooms. I only have one xbox in one room. so that said i need a device like roku to be able to watch stuff in a family room.
@jman19mwi no...the xbox is waaay to glitchy for me using hulu and netflix, cause there lasy and have horrible updates to it to(with the wii and ps3 too i hve all of them)its a little slow to..but its way less glitchy
wwwdotwhatzonyourminddotcom, this box is awesome. goodbye cable and dish. goodbye to cable and dish for charging twice the price. goodbye redbox in 2nd quarter, roku is awesome. takes two seconds to get on the tv and you're watching your fave shows, movies and more.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says he’s “definitely worried” that download caps set by Canadian ISPs could be “a significant negative for Netflix.”The net provider want to change the billing system now you might be charged by how much bandwidth you use and there talking 1 dollar maybe more for every Gigabyte you swollow. So if you still like netflix and this new billing passes be prepare to shit your pant when you recieve your next bill
I have one of these plus a Neuros MP4 recorder for recording. I tried to record to vhs but theres some kind of copy protection on the Roku box that screws up the video when trying to record it. But the Neuros MP4 recorder works fine. Get both of those boxes and you can record! :)
I just got a Roku for Christmas and damn is this this thing cool. I didn't expect it to come with all the extra channels. For those that may not know there are over 150, many are meh but many others keepers, most importantly majority are free. Also figured out on how to connect it to stream from the computer. And yes it makes the apple tv look pretty lame.
@VJFranzK I don't know what that's about. I even set up YouTube on my Mother in Law's new Roku just the day before yesterday and it showed up immediately.
I got free stuff from Lockerz. Lockerz is a company striving to be the next big social networking site. Lockerz members are rewarded with prizes for using the sites features. It's a really fun and easy way to get free stuff from the Internet. Lockerz is a legitimate company and is funded by Liberty Media and many other companies. The catch is Lockerz is an invite only site so you have to be invited by another member to join! Luckily I'm giving away invites for FREE. Just message me for invite!
The software update rendered my Roku player useless. I sent it back and received another player that does not work. Netflix stated that they have been getting a lot of calls on this problem. Roku stated they are trying to fix the problem, but are making no headway. Take this into account before you order one, it my be best to wait until they get it right.

so does this have wifi? i don't have a "official" internet service. i get my internet from the neighborhood if ya know what i mean. Will roku work with that?
Quick question for those who have used this. I'm considering getting one but the thing is the television I use for my movie viewing is right next to my computer. Could I use the computer and stream a movie to my TV without a major performance hit? I've got a Win xp computer running a 2.40 ghz cpu with about a gig of onboard memory. Please help me out. Thanks.
Yes, you could, but you're going to need a TV out card or video card that supports TV out, effectively treating your TV like an additional monitor.
Likewise, if you have an Xbox 360 or something along those lines, you can do so though that, as well.
The Roku works very well though; I saw one when visiting my family and watched a few movies through it; I personally don't need it because of my 360, but I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to fill that niche.
The roku box wont slow your computer down at all. it doesn't even connect to your computer. you just connect it to your tv, the power source and your ethernet cable (if you don't use the wireless connection).
what you might get a hit on is your internet connection, since you will be streaming the video. But if you've got a fast connection (like at least cable), you shouldn't have a problem.
i would guess it to be cheaper with the roku player(that is if you already have a netflix subscription), a pc is much more flexible but take into account its power usage
I don't know if anyone answered your Q. U can plug in your pc to your tv with no major performance downgrade if you have an HDMI out on your pc and an HDMI in on your tv. I have the Roku, plays a lot better and in higher quality than my pc does with no snags.
I am probably the most reluctant to jump on any new technical bandwagons-but I ordered this gem and not only was I amazed(read AMAZED) at the Roku player, but astounded by hookup time-I watched my first movie in less than 15 minutes from box to truly happy. I would have spent another 99 bucks, if I would have known how great this little black is.
this thing is the greatest, and it has upgraded to HD quality (since last june when the video was posted on youtube). roku box has become just surpassed my DVR in terms of bringing me stuff i wanna watch exactly when i wanna see it.
her comment was slight. I wouldn't say it suggests that she doesn't understand that movies can be rendered from film in any quality. What is true however is that our film cameras today are better than those of the 70's so the movies today are nicer, even if the old ones are rendered in HD.
Sad that this Veronica Belmont doesn't seem to understand that even older movies can have HD transfers done because the resolution of film is so high. Why is she on a tech show again?
Ur an idiot, she was saying that older movies tend to have less demand for reissuing in HD, especially a non visual movie like boondock saints. She knows more about tek than u do.
Lets see, Casablanca HD sells as many units as Pirates of the Caribbean? Sure....As I said..movies have more visual vibrance and are in higher demand newer d. She knows the difference between 16:9 and 3:4. You're just a jerk.
Does the roku have a wireless connection.
