  • I just start to understand that Rachmaninoff seems to be influenced by Faurè. This sonata is the bridge from french impressionisme to the later works of Rachmaninoff.

  • Events prior to c,1906 when this sonata was coming to life were particularly stressful for Rachmaninov while as an Opera Conductor for the Bolshoi theatre in Moscow . Policital disturbances and riots were happening all around and inhouse fighting between Artistst was not in any way inspiring . But out of all the self doubts came a Piano Sonata of this Magnitude.........
