For this I used Guitarport/Rifftracker, but any good digital amp software will do the trick ( check out reviews for Amplitube 3, Guitar Rig 4 or indeed Guitarport/Rifftracker).
There are also a loud of free amps to download plus you can get free trials of Guitar Rig 4 and Amplitube 3.
Check out the "Variax Wiki" for better information than I can give you.
I cannot remember the exact settings I used for this, but generally for a SLF and Undertones type of sound just turn everything up to about 8 ( treble middle bass) and keep the reverb off.
Then add distortion to taste ( but not to much, you want to keep bite in the sound not muddiness).
I know what you mean...but Jake plays them in the first position live as he has to sing as well...on the recording they are as I play them, either way they sound the same ( same chords) - it's just easier to get that chuckka chuckka sound with a bar chord...but live it is better with first position chord shapes!
the end.... teenage kicks am i right? :D

This is awesome (y) I have two questions
1. What setup are you using, Amp/settings/and any and all else :)
2. What Variax is that and is it a good intermediate model to step up from my squire model strat. Also if I can ask what price is one of those :)
Loving your videos.
