This is really hitting home right now. I've prayed to God for adventure of years and now that I'm out of highschool I see that prayer being answered with God calling me to leave behind my control of the life I want to live and seek out the life He has for me. But I'm scared. Now that I see the crashing waves, I want to stay in the boat. The boat is certain in my view. The boat has my worldly plans and they seem safe. But I'm caught in the middle for God between my plans and God's.
This is where I have been for the last 2 years just kinda limbo between who I know God wants me to be and who I want to be. God is good and so gracious and I love him for his patience. I pray that he will help me to see myself through his eyes and see who I am in him.

about year ago I started drifting away from God. As my relationship with Him became weaker I became increasingly unhappy. I did things I never thought I would do to try to cope with the sadness. Today I came across this song by chance along with a few others and realized how amazing He is and what I've been missing. The lines 'somewhere between who I am and who I used to be' and 'between who I am and who You're making me' really describe my life right now. Thanks God for bringing me back to you.

This is a great song. In my opinion this song comes down to obedience. God commands that we give all to Him. I think sometimes we give Him parts of us but we don't give Him all. There are parts of our lives we try to hold on to so we don't completely surrender. We are not what we used to be but we are not what we could. I want reckless abandonment but I find myself holding on to "Common Sense" sometimes.

Many today make a profession of being Christians, but sadly when their/our lives are compared to God's Word, we seem to be making too many compromises. We make a God in our own image...excusing sins and living just like those in the world. Yes, we are saved by grace, but we need to surrender our lives completely to Him...we need to turn from sin, & live for Him & then will no longer be 'caught in the middle.'
As time goes by in our relationship with God, we reach the point when we see His mercy and faithfulness. This enables us to trust Him & surrender our lives completely to Him, and let go of who we were, and see who we can be in Christ. Then we will no longer be 'caught in the middle.' We will see how He can use us in amazing ways, if only we let go & allow God to use us for His purposes...allowing God to use the pain of our shattered dreams, so we can share His love & truth with others.

Being a christian is a journey. That is why it used to be called the way. Jesus asks us to pick up our cross and follow Him. He didn't say it would be easy. He just said He'd go first. So being in the middle is sometimes a good starting place for the first step of a journey.

well i always thort that it was sumthing else.. obviosly its good to be controled by the spirit but thort sumthing else..i thort it was loosin control as in cryin and loosin control that way coz in one point of my christian faith i wasnt spending enough time with God repenting of my sin ect. so when i finally came back to him i cried all the time lol. this went on for about a month until i finally got it right. thats wat the line means to me but only coz of personal experience

I would love to hear what the band says about the meaning of the line, "how close can I get to my surrender without losing all control". I thought the idea was TO lose all self(ish) control and be controlled by the Spirit. Or maybe they're being facitious/sarcastic? Ideas?

@kimdanet It is sarcasm, of sorts. Not in a negative way but this song reflects the prayers of so many of us. How can we be saved by God without disrupting our lives. You are right, surrender is the point but all of us spend so much time somewhere in the middle.

This is a great song. In my opinion this song comes down to obedience. God commands that we give all to Him. I think sometimes we give Him parts of us but we don't give Him all. There are parts of our lives we try to hold on to so we don't completely surrender. We are not what we used to be but we are not what we could. I want reckless abandonment but I find myself holding on to "Common Sense" sometimes.

Absolutely beautiful video to go along with this song with such a powerful message. Many today make a profession of being Christians, but sadly when their/our lives are compared to God's Word, we seem to be making too many compromises. We make a God in our own image...excusing sins and living just like those in the world. Yes, we are saved by grace, but we need to surrender our lives completely to Him...we need to turn from sin, & live for Him & then will no longer be 'caught in the middle.'

As time goes by in our relationship with God, we reach the point when we see His mercy and faithfulness. This enables us to trust Him & surrender our lives completely to Him, and let go of who we were, and see who we can be in Christ. Then we will no longer be 'caught in the middle.' We will see how He can use us in amazing ways, if only we let go & allow God to use us for His purposes...allowing God to use the pain of our shattered dreams, so we can share His love & truth with others.

MysteryGirl, This song refers to how so many Christians today say they believe, but to be a Chtistian is to be 'like Christ'. Today, we choose to do God's will, but at the same time, we try to continue with our own plans. Thus, we are 'caught in the middle'.
It is time for Christians to truly decide: do we continue on our old path? Or do we surrender and do God's will, whatever that may be?

Being a christian is a journey. That is why it used to be called the way. Jesus asks us to pick up our cross and follow Him. He didn't say it would be easy. He just said He'd go first. So being in the middle is sometimes a good starting place for the first step of a journey.

I really like casting crowns but i think this song is really dangerous, God says in his word Those who blow hot and cold he will spew them out of His Mouth and it also says Don't expect to recieve anything from the Lord if u are double minded, so my advice would to be give ur control to God make ur mind up to let Him decide what to do with ur life!

I know what you mean. I think what the song means though is that a lot of us, even Christians, are caught in the middle... where we're not supposed to be. That's why it's dangerous... and that's where God finds us - whenever we're where we're not supposed to be.

This song is talking about people who live in the middle and never fight or live by his principles. Again understand this song does not say LIVE IN THE MIDDLE but calls us to get out and live for God rather than remainidle.

For me this song is about finding empathy with this common situation, in the journey of faith, but the overwhelming message is God; while in the middle we are looking with our eyes directed to God. It's more of a record of our journey to God's beautiful Kingdom. However I also find understanding for your opinion, good you pointed it out. We should always look critically not cynically. TeslaSagan - you don't seem to have considered the possibility that Christians avoid organizations like this because modern "higher education" is generally built on atheistic assumptions. Members are apparently elected by previous members; if an organization like that got started with atheism, it would make sense for its members to mostly appoint like-minded newcomers.
