it no secret that Garry Richratg was a badass guitar player in the band but the guy couldn't get his shit together off stage. Keven just decided to never work with him again. shit, garry ask if they could one last album with him and Keven just say nope. the guy just couldn't put up with his drinking anymore and just had it with him. Believe me he will never ever again wanna have anything to do with Garry musicly.
EDDIE IS GOOD BUT THE GOD IS MR. GARY RICHRATH!! ATLEAST IN MY OPINION AND OBVIOUSLY MANY OTHERS!!! WE CAN ONLY KNOW THAT HE IS STILL THE GOD OF THE GUITAR JUST LISTEN TO IT YESSSS HE IS GOD !!!!!!!!!!!
i saw reo this last summer and DAMN it was the BEST experience ive ever had in my life.i even got to meet most of the band except KC :( but they signed my cd and gave me and my sister plenty of guitar picks, some guy from their crew was really awesome too<3
I've loved this song since high school (80's). I just heard it in Menards and was singing it, everyone was looking, but I love it too much to care!! GO BROOSTER!!
I remember hearing Bruce Hall (the song writer and bass player for REO) do this song with the Jesse Ross Band at the Red Lion in Champaign before he joined REO. They also performed his song, Mid-State Illinois Blues, a much better song in my opinion that REO never screwed up by re-arranging it.
'Kay, so I'm rather shallow. I just watched Supernatural's Born Under a Bad Sign and they played this song in the ending scene with Sam and Dean in the car so I youtube'd it. Yeah, shallow, I know. Sue me. :)
saw them years ago at the Playhouse Edinburgh (that long ago0 and this song and in particular the solo blew me away. What a solo and what a performance live, bravo
i think my oldest daughter was concieved during this song in the back of my 71 nova an my wife thiks im right thank you for wondefrul times reo speedwagon
"Nine-Lives"; the last "Real" REO Album. "Bubble-gum-Ballads" seemed to be the ear-mark of the band after Nine-Lives? Without GR and Revis on the "Bass-Guitar" REO left the roots that defined them for so man years. RIP REO Speedwagon 1980...
My favorivte R.E.O. song!!!!!! I've been jammin to your great video here for some time now. I have fun watching them rock their asses off as the crowd is really into it also. Been there and done alot. Anyways peace and thanks for sharing!!!!
My dad's all time favortie REO tune. He saw them live in Nashville on the "Good Trouble" tour. When my band finally got a bar gig, my dad's birthday was the following Friday. He and mom came to see us and we did this song for him. The guys let me play lead guitar and I did the end riffs just like Gary does here. The audience loved it as did my parents. My dad came to me in tears after the show and told me how proud he was. Ah, memories.
@GuitarChickSG1 I AM A PLAYER WHO LOVES THIS STORY ! YOUR FATHER LOVES YOU LIKE I LOVE MY KIDS . KEEP ROCKIN , DONT FALL TO LESS . MAKE HIM PROUD . YOUR FATHER LOVES YOU ! GODBLESS
bschlier is right, its not the same without Gary. GR put the stamp on the REO sound and all those power love-ballads Kevin came up with dont equal one of Garys rockin' songs !
Oh you are correct about Kevins ballads making them the big-bucks, but when the smoke all clears some day it will be the music that matters, not the money and processed cheese-tunes. I have no issue personally with Amato, but it just irks me to hear him crap all over Garys licks when they play live nowadays. Oh well, at least we have the old recordings to listen to !
@70sRefugee yes, Gary is to REO as Eddie is to Van Halen. I think this was the 1st Bruce stepped up as lead vocals.........killer tune, always one of my favorites..........right up there with "Mr. Roboto" when it came to cruisin' my old Nova down the road........a looooong time ago ;-)
Not going to go into "The Great Debate". Stated it more than enough already. First Concert I ever attended in 73, R.E.O. & Lynyrd Skynyrd. Richrath rippin' fine, this vid is.
Bruce Hall does excellent job(no help needed vocally, well, back-up is needed for tune I guess) Probably my favorite R.E.O. tune, tough call....other contender's pre-75. Wish I had blinked (or something) at or about 3:40...l.o.l. Great post! Thanks.
The band put up with Garys drug habit for a lot of years. How much do they have to take. Although he is a great guitarist, he almost destroyed this stellar band.
Just saw them on Direct TV--how poor. No edge at all to the band without GR. There is no edge to the group whatsover--no longer rock and roll... just bland music with KC strutting around like an overage peacock.
I'm still trying to figure out why Gary changed parts of the guitar solo in 1989, when the solo here is the best. Dave Amatao completed destroyed the solo since.
I will love you forever! Thank you so much for posting this. The video quality for this is MUCH better than the other posting. I actually like the ending for this better than the one on the album (especially Gary's guitar work from 5:19 on).
@gilmourwaters When REO played this in Germany in 1979, Kevin sang the last part after Gary's outro solo. By 1989, it was Bruce & Kevin that sang the last part.
Fucking bad ass song!...I want to be buried to this song!!!!

@blinkingoutside If you'll notice, there is a dude behind the band with a fire extinguisher
just in case his guitar does decide to catch fire. SRV had the same problem as did Page!

Agree on Bruce Hall. I'm not a big fan of the power ballads either, but, sadly enough, I think that those are the songs that made them millionaires.
