  • Is it me or does he sound like sid of ice age?

  • Steve never stops learning, exploring, reinventing, refining, what a humble and great student.

  • I GET WHAT STEVE SAYS THAT BY SUBDIVIDING THE 5 IS POSSIBLE TO MULTI LARE THE WHOLE PATTERN SHIFTING FROM A METRONOMIC RATE OF 3 TO 5 YET HOLDING BACK THE DOUBLES ON THE FEET, SIMPLE!

  • thats what happens when you have enough money to make music that only musicians give a shit about.

  • Steve's ability is beyond amazing. If I could learn 1% of what he has to offer, I'd be 100% better drummer. Even though I been playing maybe as long as him, I wonder if ever could do quadruplets with my left hand and with my feet , at the same time make a sandwich and have a conversation.

  • If John Riley is interested in Steve, you'd better shut up and listen!

  • Steve is the current master of the the Drumset. Period. Weckl is great, but Steve is better..I love Neil but even Neil knows..

  • Damn that's awesome.

  • Steve Smith from American Dad? xD

  • He is so smart, one of the best in the world. He owns most drummers.

  • The first time when he counts in and says he's playing quintuplets with his left hand... those aren't quintuplets at the tempo he counted.

  • @eebie376 yea also the guy says 'it can also be thought of as 5/16'' haha no that would be groupings of 5 16th notes note quins :P

  • @eebie376 yea also the guy says 'it can also be thought of as 5/16'' haha no that would be groupings of 5 16th notes note quins :P

  • @thickpooxbox360 Nope. a.) the notation displayed on screen is quintuplets and b.) the notes would be even slower then given the amount of notes to the beat.

  • @eebie376 what im saying is quins are 5 notes to a beat (instead of 4 to a beath which 16th notes are) so his 5/16 time sig isnt true, you can play quins in 4/4 no problem

  • @thickpooxbox360 Hey again. Yes, you're absolutely right: You can play any subdivision to a beat. Heck, if the tempo was slow enough and your hands are fast enough, you could play 21 notes inside a quarter note. I think I was too curt in my last reply -- what I was saying was that Steve rushed the quintuplets after the count off to the point where they weren't quintuplets any more. Regardless, he's phenomenal, and pushes the boundaries of drumming. It was just confusing after the count off.

  • @eebie376 Oh yea i know haha i was just mentioning that the other guys an idiot :P

  • great solo!...don't understand the point of the feet patters in this. He's playin 5 lits with his feet, thats all that needed to be said. I dont get the fuss over doubles. Not saying he shouldn't do doubles, if he wants to do doubles then more power to him, thats fine, but i think the point of playing music is to play whatever is written in a way thats most comfortable for you. I dont get why he's taking time to explain the feet, 5 lits is all that needed to be said, whatever. Great Job Steve!!!

  • @kook1028 I was JUST gonna say that. WHY the fuck play doubles when you can save energy and get more power and save the effort to do it with singles?

  • @pingaaas yeah, idk, i have met drummers out there that will play regular 16th notes in a solo but theyll play them in some weird unnecessary pattern like RLLR LLLL RRRL RRLR etc etc with stuff on top of it, and they say theyre better than other drummers....that doesnt mean anything...however maybe the doubles are more comfortable to Steve, and if it is than whatever, no big deal. Every drummer has a different definition of "comfortable" but the doubles would over complicate it for me..

  • @kook1028 if you have a different sound for L and R then the doubles are going to have an impact

  • @krusher1974 thats true, but i thought we are supposed to have the same sound quality with our feet. I would expect someone like Steve Smith to have great sound quality with both feet..

  • not half bad..

  • Perfect!

  • he is so genius, that people from hudson had to find someone who would try to translate his perfection to us mortals.

  • i like steve.he try to make drum pattern out of western scene..Khanda west. quintuplet..wonderful authentic note..

  • No one is teaching anyone. John Riley is history, application, modernisation and soul. He's getting cash for this gig.

  • howie mandel?

  • he's the only other drummer besides gavin harrison who I've heard talk about subdividing the pulse into 5's, 7's and so on.

  • Guy in black: You hit one wrong note and you're a dead man!

  • FUCK YOU!! groups of 5!! are you mad??!?!?!?!

  • I like thjis ostinato.

  • didnt know Howie Mandell could play drums

  • @Mrbeanoe hahaha that was my first reaction. glad i found this guy tho

  • its funny that steve smith is teaching john riley, who is also an amazing jazz drummer. steve smith is just a GOD on his kit

  • You know what?!?!?!?! I fucking hate Steve Smith!!!!!!!!!! Here I am trying to master a double stroke roll and some triplets and I see this. Okay seriously, this guy is a MASTER. Yeah, yeah, everybody refers to Neil Peart or Jon Bonham. Yes, they are great drummers but Steve Smith has THE pHD in drums.

  • @lawdog1301 oh lol i feel the samexD i am here that i am trying to increase speed to my paradidle and then i see this man who.. he ... pff i ma so invidious-.- xD

  • @lawdog1301 check out Gavin Harrison. He's the only equal!!!

  • Steve Smith! thanks to the Free videos! Im getting most of the techniques from you! playing constant quarter note, eight notes, sixteenth npte and 32nd notes Right hand left, fot pedals and snare mixing/combining them for an instance doin quarter note in ride, palying melodies on snares and or eight note in hi hat by the left and create of sometimes syncopation!and half note in bass thats the one I realize how to be good.combining them!your such a great Drummer

  • Steve Gadd, Steve Smith, I'll call my son Steve

  • genius?? he is a X-MEN !

  • youtube.com/watch?v=z_Y6UZ1pKEc

  • Steve is GREAT!! Awesome drummer!!

  • supposedly i heard a comment about how he grew up. Supposedly he admitted that he had no natural talent for the instrumeent... but his pure passion drove him to countless hours of practice, getting professional lessons... idk that is just what i HEARD.

  • hes a machine its not even fair to anybody i know it makes me feel like shit

  • Steve Smith is the best drummer ever. The only guy in the same world as Smith is Simon Phillips from Toto. Those guys are hands down the greatest.

  • The secret to being a Master is by being a Master Student. Always studying, always learning, always practicing, always growing in what you do. This is how Steve does it.

  • Im wrong or he is a litle out of the tempo when plays the fiftths with left hand?

    0:50 "tempo its like..."

  • pretty good for a man in a shirt...

lol im kidding steve is amazing at anything he does

  • lol he kinda looks like the guy that hosts deal or no deal, still way badass though.

  • And do not forget who's interviewing him...

  • @rmoraespinto Yes indeed, Riley is awesome, and an awesome teacher as well.

  • he looks too much like Howie Mandell

  • The guy sitting there is an ass face. and very creepy.

  • @PiekertJao Yes, actually our face looks very similar to your asshole.

  • @meccaturbo Haha you're a funny guy! Mr funny guy. Ass face

  • @PiekertJao They call you "rectal probe" for obvious reasons.

  • @meccaturbo <3

  • @PiekertJao No, thats John Riley, author of "The Art Of Bop Drumming" and "Jazz Drummer's workshop." They are probably the best instructional books on jazz drumming, and Riley is certainly one of the best jazz educators.

  • Recently watched one of his instructional videos and found it to be one of the best I've seen.

  • este es un baterista

  • the interviewer knows too much

  • @TheMASDrummer looks like John Riley to me...he's also awesome

  • Howie Mandel plays the drums ??????

  • Definitely not a fail man.

  • John Riley is a sketch fuck

  • he's so technical, it's amazing. a true student of drumming.

  • #

cclmagic you are very right...the idea is

(or at least after playing for some good years that's what I think) when(if) you can play jazz, metal or rock and roll drumming is something you have already achieved...but if you can play only rock and roll, metal, jazz and fusion is the next step if you want to evolve so there are certain things to be learned..it's true..what I said the first time is not true but is related somehow to this idea :D

  • aside from the fact that he's an incredible drummer, he is a musical genius

  • Haha, this guy makes me look like shit compared to him x0

  • If Lars can play jazz, considering all what implies when i say "jazz", better than playing his easier/less experience-demanding/drum-fighting style beats, he would have . . . trust me. . .

  • something very easy to observe...jazz drummers can play metal even when they sleep and use one hand to scratch their asses but metal drummers or most of them could not even dream of playing jazz

  • @Teethclenser2007 thomas haake and derek roddy are both very groovy and jazz oriented if they want to be, and theyre two of the best metal drummers out today.

  • @Teethclenser2007 Imagine Steve Smith playing Death Metal for fun....:-) This guy can play anything....

  • lars could teach steve smith a thing or two? ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah. lars playing jazz? for krissake lars has already trouble playing simple shit like trash metal ah ah him playing jazz i want to see it with my own eyes. steve smith can play metal and he has done it with vinnie moore and tony macalpine, but it ain't your typical metal. it is shred metal and neoclassical metal.

  • @dwilmer7 You speak before doing your reseach kiddo.

Lars may be your hero, but that's pretty narrow minded!

  • @dwilmer7 You can't compare the two dude, they're two totally different styles. It's like comparing Waffle House to a Five Star restaurant.

  • @dwilmer7 you must be fucking kidding, lars doesnt have drum technique, he is not a tight drummer (or at least not as tight as steve smith), he plays really simple stuff...

i'm not gonna argue he is really known and makes a ton of money, but his creativity is nowhere near steve's and his ability to perform his ideas is not even 1% of steves...

  • Just amazing, nothing else really to say

  • ass

    hell

  • what is funnier ... john riley`s telling steve smith what he is doing or steve smith`s reaction to john riley telling him what he is doing .... both are totally GENIUS anyway .... these two are right up with peter erskine for the best jazz drummers of my generation

  • af q tutorial em

  • Its amazing how he can do something completely different with each limb

  • I don't know if people get this or not, but what he's playing with ease is hard a shit

  • xenochrony

  • i mean *tuplets haha still got a thumbs up on the first one though :)

  • Esse é um dos caras!!! fodaaaa

  • is this john riley?

  • yes

  • @joegritschacher ... the GREAT john riley

  • What a drummer!!!100% independence!!!

  • INTERDEPENDENCE

  • Sorry, I meant QUINTAPLETS

  • ..tuples

  • Thanks.

  • I knew about quintuplets a few years ago and I started practicing them a year ago, it's funn to use them in some licks, but only Steve Smith makes so amazing solos with such interesting and odd elements...

  • what!

  • Steve Smith is one of the most amazing drummers ever on the PLANET! I love the fact that he is so INTO teach others about drums and promoting great drum ideas!

  • I'm a lil bit confused on when to use your right and left foot on That bass pattern.

  • It's R LL RR LL RR LL

  • It's R LL RR LL RR for the entire piece. It's just like doing a double stroke roll, except on your feet and starting with one foot.

  • One monster that explains to another monster something about drum ^_^

  • pinche pelon chingon

  • Deep..............

  • other guy looks like Chris Hansen lol

  • is that john riley he's talking to?

  • ya that would be him.

  • yes

  • Yes. That's Jim.

  • YES

  • i hate quintuplets, there hard to read

  • After three, all odd-metered rhythms are hard to read. It is so satisfying once you're able to sight read pieces in 5/16, 7/16, and so on.

  • i'd kill 4that drumkit

  • hahahaha mee too

  • Awsome...

  • ... one sexy beast.

true, he looks like Howie Mandel's evil twin; however, I am referring to his freakish coordination.

  • sounds like the halo theme song

  • lol??????

  • cool stuff man

  • each part sounds easy when he shows it one at a time, but all together, is pretty crazy

  • That blows my mind. Awsome Steve Smith.
