NIN - Feels more about mankind asking "what have I become". It's meaning is far deeper then self. Most don't look at mankind as "1" unison thing so, the meaning is deeper and more sophisticated.
JC - I feel it's more about the self. It's a person asking "what have I become" when viewing their own life. The thing is, many people do this so they feel more related and understand it... it's a simplistic meaning.

@kilenator You need someone (like me, for example !...lol) to explain to you what the song is about : you must not have any problems with drugs to not get it, "I hurt myself today to see if I can feel, the needle tear a hole !..." he is talking about shooting up drugs, a addict knows that it is doing arm to himself when doing drugs but cannot help doing it, the drug release the pain and help the addict to feel alive, he's playing with hjs life but "everyone goes at the end" so why not ???
