it exists....its called throttle response...ive been in a few cars that did it....the new 09 ford focus is one that suffers from it...it SUCKS..and its not fun
its rpm lag not turbo lag. turbo lag is when on the wrong gear (shifting too early maybe by a couple hundred rpms) you simply loose power and will barely accelerate thats because a turbo spools up around 4Krpm (varies with turbo size/engine/ecu flash) so shifting it to early will make the next gear have even less rpms so the turbo hasnt spooled (even if your around 6K+ rpms) and rpm lag is a whole other thing mainly something not right with the ECU so keeps the rpms high even in a different gear

As long as you are careful with curbs on winding roads, you're all set. Only one time, I had to replace front axel on my Firebird. But that was the only time I spent more than 500 bucks from drifting.

I don't want to get into this too far but BMW 335i with a JB3 tune (under $1k) can very close to those numbers since it runs on low PSI. Get some better tires, exhaust work, and you can get those numbers (0-60 3.9 sec and 1/4 mile 12.5) for under $3k.

the "rev hang" probably has something to do with the fact that it's turbocharged, my mazdaspeed 3 does the same thing, you can eliminate it by dropping the gas off fully before depressing the clutch... something about boosted engines makes this more noticeable than in a NA car. most likely leftover fuel and air that needs to burn off, and you just lifted the load by disengaging the tranny, so there's less resistance to hinder the engines RPM's, just my uneducated guess.

I'll even back up my personal experience. The first car I ever drove was a 94 Corolla - FWD, and I learned everything from it. Over the years, my dad got me a BMW 335i, for a graduation/college gift. Now I liked the BMW, because of its the quality, and brand, never really cared about the RWD. Also before this I drove my cousin's Acura TSX, and my other cousins Acura RSX-S. Genesis Coupe 2.0T Sucks. Quarter mile about ~14.8~14.9 seconds. While a RSX-S which is a FWD can do a better time.
The host of this episode simply implied that they only way to learn proper driving technique is to have a RWD car? That doesn't make sense in anyway possible, but I'm sorry hes bias for RWD. You can learn proper driving technique with any drive train formatted car.
If I have that much room to stuff I-6, I'd put Tau V8 engine (in a heartbeat) and get all of its N/A 375HP. Silky smooth V8 with unreal amount of torque is always better than cranky I-6 with less torque.
Why are people suggesting USED cars as an alternative? This review states that FOR NEW CAR BUYERS there isn't much out there by means of RWD performance and this is a smart buy.
Possible NEW alternatives include the Mustang and Camaro V6's. Even a base model Genesis Coupe is well equipped @ 23k (less the Track goodies).

The "hanging" revs is caused by the turbo having to wind down. The compressed air is not cut off immediately by closing the throttle body.

@kenmastersmaster The only Mustang I drove (rented) had HORRIBLE interiors, it was a 4-litre V6 engine with 210hp, and heavier than an elephant. How stupid is that. This one delivers the same power with half the engine, it's lighter, and everything about it looks much nicer. There's no comparison.

No, you notice it on downshifts. Personally, it doesn't affect my upshifts one bit. And when you're downshifting, who really cares, right?
My 2nd, 3rd and 4th upshifts give me absolutely no lag, and I've kept a close eye on the RPMs. I'm driving a 3.8

its rpm lag not turbo lag. turbo lag is when on the wrong gear (shifting too early maybe by a couple hundred rpms) you simply loose power and will barely accelerate thats because a turbo spools up around 4Krpm (varies with turbo size/engine/ecu flash) so shifting it to early will make the next gear have even less rpms so the turbo hasnt spooled (even if your around 6K+ rpms) and rpm lag is a whole other thing mainly something not right with the ECU so keeps the rpms high even in a different gear

I wouldn't mind picking up a 2004-5 NSX for around 20-25K though. It will be an awesome joycar at that price.
I used to go to Long Beach Grand Prix every year during the mid 90's, so I know about Honda engines and its platforms. NSX Zanardi version would be one heck of a car to own.
For the price, GC is still not a bad choice: nice small car to work on, in your garage. Mustang is just too heavy and bulky to work on, in my garage at home. I heard that 2011 Mustang V6 has 305HP, though.

This GC 2.0T R-Spec would be a perfect used car to pick up at around $12K in about 3 or 4 years. When power train warranty runs out, install turbo, exhaust and suspension upgrades to about 400HP.
Let the trainy wear out, and install upgrades as well. It will be a sweet machine!

As long as you are careful with curbs on winding roads, you're all set. Only one time, I had to replace front axel on my Firebird. But that was the only time I spent more than 500 bucks from drifting.
Besides that, it's all normal wear and tear, which are covered by factory warranties.
But, the amount of sheer joy you're getting is worth a few bucks.

If you want to save some money for your joyride, go to junk yard or used tire stores and get a couple of tires with rims. They cost no more than 100 bucks each. Old tires slide out much better, too.

It's very easy to drift on an RWD car with enough juice under the hood. You're not gonna be able to drift with this I4 engine, though.
Back in high school days, I used to learn drifting in a very large Target parking lot covered with roughly 6 inches of fresh snow, after the midnight. I used lamp posts for S-turn points.
Once you know how to steer and gas, you can move onto dirt roads, and then eventually to the pavement roads.

the hang is fixed with an ECU flash...hyundai just put a damage control limiter on high RPM to cut out for 2 seconds to prevent engine damage...but it really wasn't necessary...so you can get it removed now at a dealer or do it yourself...

However, I can go out, get a GC R-Spec for 23K, drop 2K for 500HP bolt on turbo, drop another 1K for some nasty suspension upgrades.
For around 26-27K, I have a beast capable of doing 0-60 in 4 seconds. Let's see if you can do that with BMW.

I don't want to get into this too far but BMW 335i with a JB3 tune (under $1k) can very close to those numbers since it runs on low PSI. Get some better tires, exhaust work, and you can get those numbers (0-60 3.9 sec and 1/4 mile 12.5) for under $3k.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the Genesis but I thought I might mention some facts.

the "rev hang" probably has something to do with the fact that it's turbocharged, my mazdaspeed 3 does the same thing, you can eliminate it by dropping the gas off fully before depressing the clutch... something about boosted engines makes this more noticeable than in a NA car. most likely leftover fuel and air that needs to burn off, and you just lifted the load by disengaging the tranny, so there's less resistance to hinder the engines RPM's, just my uneducated guess.

I'll even back up my personal experience. The first car I ever drove was a 94 Corolla - FWD, and I learned everything from it. Over the years, my dad got me a BMW 335i, for a graduation/college gift. Now I liked the BMW, because of its the quality, and brand, never really cared about the RWD. Also before this I drove my cousin's Acura TSX, and my other cousins Acura RSX-S. After all that FWD driving, and I drive my first RWD car? You know Matt? IT FEELS THE FUCKING SAME.

The only nice thing I can say about boring Honda cars are their VTEC engines and double wishbones. That's it. Nice cars, but no testasterone. They tried that with NSX, but they failed it miserably.

Nobody will associate shitty Honda with "sports" or "muscle" or "pony" cars. I know it's unfair, but that's the way it is. I wouldn't mind dropping VTEC V6 in the GC, though.

If I have that much room to stuff I-6, I'd put Tau V8 engine (in a heartbeat) and get all of its N/A 375HP. Silky smooth V8 with unreal amount of torque is always better than cranky I-6 with less torque.

Why are people suggesting USED cars as an alternative? This review states that FOR NEW CAR BUYERS there isn't much out there by means of RWD performance and this is a smart buy.
Possible NEW alternatives include the Mustang and Camaro V6's. Even a base model Genesis Coupe is well equipped @ 23k (less the Track goodies).
