Just wanted to say thanks for posting this! I just poured our bathroom countertop yesterday (my first) and wanted to get an idea of how the Kodiak color will look - this clip showed it perfectly. I'm all about DIY, most contractors are worth the price they charge, but if I have some extra time, you can be damn sure I'm going to save some money. Most people who aren't contractors won't spot minor flaws and no matter how imperfect it turns out, I can go out and play with all the money I saved.
I would not be happy with this work. The sprayer is not working well, and the pattern is only a few inches wide. The overall color is too dense, with bare spots still remaining. You would get dramatically different and far better results with a thorough cleaning and a high pressure even mist applied from 1-2 feet up in two coats. And diluted more than the acid you applied.
This is obviously the work of an amateur, and lacks in craftsmanship. But you saved some money.
Yeah, the first coat is bone dry so I'm not sure how I was "stepping in the stain" and you can't see any broom marks in the finished product...like acid stained concrete is supposed to look like paint or something....
I own two restaurants where I did the acid staining. Sorry if you contractor types that wanted to charge me 10k for each floor can't handle how simple the project can be. I've seen plenty of junk "pro" jobs. I hope this helps the DIY crowd with what it was meant for...context.
THIS IS WHY ACID STAINING SHOULD BE LEFT TO KNOWLEDGEABLE, PROFESSIONAL INSTALLERS. I AGREE THAT THE BROOM MARKS AND STEPPING IN THE STAIN IS COMPLETELY WRONG. THIS VIDEO DISCOURAGES POSSIBLE CLIENTS FROM CONSIDERING HAVING AN ACID STAIN INSTALLED IN THEIR HOME OR BUSINESS. LEAVE IT TO US PROS.. THERE ARE MANY VARIABLES THAT MUST BE ADDRESSED BEFORE YOU CAN EVEN START STAINING.
Good points Joe, but that is exactly what I expect from a 'pro' that makes money doing this work. It would be silly to think that this little video is a full tutorial on acid staining...kind of like a video on framing shows you how to build a house. By the way, the drain cover is plastic and I replaced it with a new one later. Again, this video shows one small aspect of a simple acid stain job. If you do your homework it -is- a DIY project.
There is alot more to it than most people think, it is not a simple as sweeping off the concrete and spraying the stuff on and magically getting awesome results. Your video does not show or explain any prep work or nuetralizing of stain. Any bozo can throw some crap on the ground but it takes a pro or at least someone who really understands the process to make a really nice long lasting surface using these products. I also noticed you didn't take off the metal drain cover, acid is corrosive.
I made the video to show that acid staining can be a very simple project that most DIY'ers can handle. In my limited experience, most instructional videos make the process complicated in order to produce additional (often beautiful) design elements.
The stain was purchased from a contractor supply store in a larger city, but they are becoming increasingly easy to find. That particular color was called Kodiak.
Looks like shit

@rojocwx It's simple job. Don't build yourself up it's an easy job unless groutting, faux, etc

That looks like crap. You could see the broom swirls still.

Thank you for this.
If everyone else wants to complain, then go make your own video.

You shouldn't stain over the foot prints you left, and I'm not a pro. Can you see them in the finished product?

Why would you bother to make a video like this. Have you seen the other concrete stain instructional videos.
