I still cry when i think of the loss of Maya. I have gotten a tattoo of a wolf with a single feather in dedication. We still miss you and remember your spirit Sweetie, hope you are running free in the clouds :)

I just came back from holidays and didn't have time to check on the wolf pack lately ..

now I'm shocked. Maya really is a great loss for the team and especially for Grizzer.

First Nyssa and now Maya .. All those dominative females die. Why ? It's so not fair. I really loved them both.

It just broke my heat when I didnt see Maya in either of the exsibits I was afraid to look at the Lost wolves. Maya was my favorite wolf. Being only 13 and obsessed with animals,I grew very attached to these wolves at the wolf center.I bacically grew up with Grizzer and Maya.The loss of Maya was very devistating for me and it will be hard to even go to the wolf center any more because I will have to many memorys of Maya, it would be to painful.

As in nature there is always beauty and sadness, the beauty is knowing and sharing life with them, the sadness is when it ends too shortly. Thanks IWC and Staff for sharing her life with me, I felt like she was part of my family as well as yours,and share your sadness. I have learned a great amount from IWC and the Packs. I am sure that Maya is proud to have been in your care for these years, I can see the Love and Respect you give these wolves. She now Runs Free, just look to the Sky. RIP.

Also I'm surprised Aiden seems to be taking the dominant role. I would of guessed Denail would of taken it since Grizzer is gone but he kinda calmed down on his own after losing some testing challenges didn't he? Aiden didn't have too much of a chance to do much with Maya keeping him in his place

Oh and in the next update are we gonna find out what may have possibly happened after hours? And did Grizzer get overthrown or has he been removed due to psychological issues of not having Maya around? From what I read it sounds like nothing happened to Grizzer physically so I was curious about what went on between the wolves. Again.. Maya you will be missed.

omg! what a shock! that is so sad! i do feel the decision was wrong.. though it is policy or management practices.. that i understand but i disagree... people say it is humane to not let an animal suffer.. and put it down.. but how is it humane if we don't even do that with humans? if it was someone's mother.. she would have three legs and have been put in retirement... anyways.. sad to see she is gone but glad that she gave many lessons to us and gained respect for her species!!! @christabella81 Putting Maya to sleep was the most humane thing to do. If they would of let her go on with the pack the pack would have killed her due to her being too weak. Also putting her some place away from her pack in a form of "retirement" would be like taking you away from your family forever and you not knowing what happened to them. It would be a very lonely world.

I was saddened and shocked to hear of Maya's passing. The decision not to allow her suffering was humane. My thoughts are with wolf care staff who dedicate their time and love. I will thnk of Maya through my cat whose nickname is Maya wolf girl due to her likeness and sassy, spunky, and dominent behavior. Thank you Maya girl for all of the enjoyment you gave to people.

if the rules about managing an injured animal were diferent, I would at least tried to do something about maya's leg, and as a last resort, ambutate it and put her on pain medication and into a retirement holding pen, i just wish there where more options then euthanization, and I wis that animals, expecially wolves could have a say in medical treatment, if only they could talk to us. the desision to by the vet kinda makes me mad a little but i understand that we dont want them to deal with pain.

Maya was such a great dominant female. She taught me so much about wolf behavior. I will miss her and Grizzer in the exhibit pack. I hope Griz recovers psychologically very soon! Such a sad series of events...but I know the wolf care staff at the IWC will do the best thing for all the wolves.

I shed tears when i saw the posting on facebook, she was loved by so many and taught so many people about wolves. Through this tragedy we must remember that there is learning opportunity , so she continues to teach. I honor her with even more determination and vigor in my studies, and makes me want to work even harder at making this world safe for both wolves and human. I've been waiting for this particular update, thank you Lori. My daughters and I have been visiting the center for years, we feel like we know all the wolves so well and appreciate your information and updates. We're so saddened to hear about Maya, can't believe I won't see her my next visit in the spring. She was so important to the pack, you can tell by the way the rest of the wolves are acting.
