This is from a BBC program about the Cream, made by Tony Palmer circa 1968. There is another good clip where Ginger Baker plays two different rhythms at the same time, and another moment where Jack Bruce says the guy with the best bass lines was J.S. Bach.
It wasn't long after this clip that Clapton stopped using the wah, due to the fact that, as he himself said, "Why bother, when Hendrix said it ALL with the wah?"
yeah its the real eric clapton the cool version before he turned into an old bb king wannabe if clapton had of got into hard rock just a little bit more he would have been as good as jimmy page infact clapton for led zepp would have been good
Clapton is by far and above my favorite guitar player of all time... but, there is a reason Eric said Knopfler was one of his favorite guitar players. I love both, but to my ears, Clapton makes the guitar sing unlike anyone else... except maybe Hubert Sumlin... but I prefer Clapton. I have always found EC to be the best for over 30 years. And I have heard a lot of guitars sing. Clapton makes me feel like life has meaning in those sounds.
@Qlorn Clapton's a hack. A talented imitator, but an imitator all the same. If this guy makes you feel that your life has meaning, then you haven't heard many guitarists.
@zoznack So, when BB King says "I admire the man. I think he's No. 1 in rock 'n' roll as a guitarist..." he has no idea what he is talking about? Im sure BB King has no clue about guitarists either? When you make comments like you have, you clearly show your opinionated derisiveness. Just because you dont like Clapton, doesnt mean he is a hack. Ive seen BB, Clapton, Guy, Landreth with Hiatt, Raitt, Lifeson, and McLaughlin in concert off the top of my head. But what do I know?
@Qlorn Clapton's a hack, regardless of what you CLAIM that BB King said about him. BTW, Eric ripped off BB aplenty...Clapton hasn't done dick in 40 years. His best days were with Cream/Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos, when he was actually PUSHED by great musicians. His stage show is right out of Vegas.
@zoznack Forgot to mention Mayhall as well, which is sublime. Secondly what do you get out of slamming someones opinion? Music is clearly subjective to each person. Do you just like to be combative or be nasty? Who makes you feel that life has meaning when you listen to their music? I would never take that away from you or anyone. I try and teach my children to respect every ones views and beliefs without passing judgement on their person because they dont agree. Life's to short dude.
If your sitting down like Eric you have to stomp to engage the switch . If your standing you don't have to stomp on it but lots of guitarists still did to make sure it was on.
haha damn, my cousin did that to my vox wah (about 3 years ago made in China) and it broke the damn thing. Clapton fucking SLAMMED that bitch. Back when things were well made. You could use that thing as a hammer lol
Does anyone know where the rest of this interview is at? It is very interesting, And I saw in another video of the same interview jack bruce for a split second and changed the camera towards clapton talkin bout his woman tone.
Isn't there a lot more to this interview. I think I remember him being asked about developing his technique, and him playing a single note with a lot of vibrato and saying something like "First you spend a couple of years learning to do that". Does anyone else remember that, and is it from this interview?
What happened to guitar players today?? I am a guitar and I'm influenced by all these cool legends etc. I feel some people think the way I play is old? and then I hear some trendy player using 2-3 notes with too much delay for a solo which I think sounds terrible and everyone thinks thats cool???I'm hanging out with the wrong people :)
to the two guys disagreeing a few months ago about whether Eric or Jimi are the best guitar players ever..... I've been playing guitar since 1968 and am still obsessed by it. Their are only a dozen intervals and about a dozen chords (chords used in blues/ rock). What's amazing is that certain players like Jimi and Eric can sound so different. Besides everybody knows Randy Rhoads was the greatest!
@MrSnatch22 you should see the Cry Baby Documentary, where the creator of this pedal explains that Vox and Jim Dunlkop use the same device, 'cos they had the same source, Phillips Organ Company or something like that
@RastafariPoet yeah, i meant all along the watchtower. had a pretty damn good high going last night. then after i posted the comment i realized i stated the wrong song and it was too late

@dubbly1 yea, i tottally agree. though i dont like how everyone says jimi is better than eric clapton vise versa. its just all the people were amazed with all the tricks jimi did and then think hes the greatest guitarist of all time. i personally dont think jimi is better than eric clapton, nor clapton better than hendrix. but it seems for that clapton makes his guitar talk and has more soul. but thats just one guys opinion so noone send me bullshit messages saying im a dumbass. somthin like tht
Honestly?.. Makes his guitar talk and has more soul.. Over Jimi Hendrix? Really? I know that is your opinion. However, I find it absurd. Jimi clearly was far more talented than Eric. Not only do I know that, Eric himself knows that.
@RastafariPoet well i can see that your an all out hendrix fan. its just i dont view him as the best guitarist, nor do i view clapton as the best. hes amazing. its just my opinion. people are just amazed at alot of the tricks that he does. hes in my top 5 though. same thing with eddie van halen, alot of people i know think he is the best. hes amazing, but not the best. i would know somethin about guitar seeing that ive been playing for almost 10 years. oh and yes he does use it in purple haze
As a 12 year old I remember sitting open-mouthed at this back when it was first broadcast on the BBC in black and white. Amazing that he was already an icon at - what age was he here - 23?
