Absolutely superb. Irina certainly made the transition from the old 6s scoring system to COP w/o missing a beat. She was always a great skater and absolutley earned the gold here. WOW! It is so wonderfull to hear the audience's reaction and the ovation..in her home country!! Irina is a TRUE champion who was beaten down and picked herself back up and delivered this! As with other posters words fail me but THANK YOU IRINA...for coming back and sharing this!!
I'll always prefer Sasha Cohen's style to Irina's, but this night, IRINA WAS THE WINNER! I can't imagine how someone could come back after injury and illness and skate like THIS.
WOW, she really deserves the Gold. Fantastic performance overall, the jumps, the spins, full of energy from the beginning of her program till the end.
It must be frustrating when the audience tries clapping along with the music and the tempo changes, so it sounds like a huge mess. Sure would throw me off.
fantastic!!!! she should had a higher mark.... 145 at least... the difficult of the excellent 3Ltz-3L with no underotation... the two 3L with an extremely diff entrance, one in combination with another 2L... 3S2L2T... Spins,Spiral... well... just magnificent!!!! It was Her night
Umm, by adding a 3Lo to the first jumping pass, did she end up getting zero points for her 3Lo-2Lo combo? You're only allowed to repeat a triple jump once (and only in combination), and she ended up doing three 3Lo's (two in combination).
@PringlesLover123 I remember it was that an extra loop jump was not calculated, because she repeated the loop jumps three times. But I could be wrong.
I have a question about her costumes... she's the first female skater I can remember that wore pants or a unitard. Is there a reason that this doesn't happen more often or that I hadn't seen it before? Was there a rule of some kind? Thanks!
there was a rule that women couldn't wear pants, but after 04 it was changed to allow women if they wanted to. the reason why it doesn't happen as much is because its a personal preference. irina always liked long-ish dresses and pants. i guess other female skaters just prefer to wear a dress. hope that answered you question =)
Normally when a skater adds a triple it is out of desperation - they've screwed up earlier and are trying to make up for it.
To see Irina just throw one from sheer exhilaration makes me smile every time. This performance sums up all the things her fans loved about her - the joy, energy, athleticism and exhilaration she always tried to create.
And those apple-cheeks! I really miss her. She was an inspiration to watch - never relying on natural talent, but with tonnes of spunk and hard work.

Yeah, she did three triple loops-- so only one of them counted.
Irina clearly deserved to win this competition, but I'd strongly dispute the idea that she earned every title she won. Sometimes she was undermarked, sometimes she was overmarked.
Personally, I thought she should have been 4th in the 1996 Worlds, 3rd (for a bronze) in the 1997 Worlds (causing Michelle Kwan to win the title and Terror Lewinsky to finish second), and 3rd at the 2002 Olympics.
You guys, you have got to see the most recent video of Irina Slutskaya presented under Golden Skates Award 2009! It is the most recent video of her and you won't believe how incredible she is. She is still skating!
This programme puts such a huge smile on my face, knowing what she had been through that year and how hard she had to fight to over-come it all. Love the audience's response, as well. Nothing better than unanimous cheering and clapping to get one through competition ! :o)
Well this is where you're very wrong. She deserved every title she won - and didn't get a few that she deserved as she had been shafted for certain US skaters.
You're contradicting yourself. Sarah won in 2002 due to her jumps, and nothing else. Irina was shafted in the short programme for Kwan, and had a couple of less-than-perfect jumps in the long, but it was Irina who had the TOTAL PACKAGE.
@Russie77 - Sarah won because two better skaters screwed up in the long program. After Michelle fell, the gold was Irina's to lose. If she had done her 3-3 (or maybe even without it, with out the step-out) and not rushed her program, she would have placed first in the long and won the gold medal. In my opinion, she incorrectly believed that there was no way the judges would place
The issue, though, is that she shouldn't have bene wrong. Sarah couldn't jump. To the naked eye, her program looked rediculously good, but judges should have clearly seen the flutz jumps and underrotated jumps/combinations.
Michelle and Irina should not have needed Triple-Triples to beat Hugues, and Hughes should have been behind Cohen with those technical issues. I think that's another reason why the CoP was brought in, to give the judges a means to penalize poor tech/execution in the LP.
you're right, but all of it was wrong from the beginning. Irina should've been 1st after the short program...not michelle. if Irina was first after the short, she would've won the gold even if Sarah won the free skate. but i agree, she never saw Sarah as a threat, and underestimated the U.S. skaters
@MrAlexNaum Are Russian figure skating fans crazy or something? Irina is a fantastic jumper: high jumps and some amazing combinations and she has good energy on the ice. Difficult footwork, transitions? Interpretation of music? Repore with the audience? It takes a complete package to be a skating champion. She was good. She deserved this win. But not an inspiring artist which is the magic of figure skating and what makes the legends: John Curry, Janet Lynn, G&G, Michelle Kwan, Peggy Flemming.
@zurieljoshua If you want crazy and rabid fans, check out the rabid Kwanatics. Irina is a powerful athlete and great champion... a true credit to the sport of figure skating. She has been through so much personally and emotionally the last two seasons preceding this championships so I think it's hard not to root for her. I agree she certainly deserved this win and it was great to see her do it in front of the home crowd =)
@zurieljoshua Michelle Kwan is a whiny wimpy coward full of excuses..ooooh, I have a groin owie....ooooh, marching was so hard after a first class flight at Emily's expense...wasn't good for her body...Irina is a TRUE champion.
@getrealandsee There is a reason Kwan's programs have hundreds of thousands of views. They are art and one can watch them over and over. Ask people not from the USA and Russia, and most would say they like Michelle's skating more. Slutskaya is a great athlete, but Michelle is a legend for her incredible presence on the ice and her consistancy. Skating fans around the world adore her and cherish her skating. You seem to have personal vendetta against Michelle. You must feel very threatened.
Ah, I was in attendance at that competition. I remember waiting with bated breath for that announcement FIRST PLACE. Half the audience were in tears. The win in Moscow meant so much to Irina, and the pressure was huge.
The best & the hottest. Pity she never won an Olympic title.
