In the original books and and tv specials Madeline was not an orphan. In the tv special both of her parents are alive and they visit her at Christmas. Hoever, after the live action film adaptation with Frances McDormand was created Madeline became an orphan in all versions.

Wait a minute...since when did Madeline become an orphan? I grew up reading the books and watching the animated series. I remember the first book/episode when Madeline had her appendix removed and her papa showering her with gifts. Then there is the other episode when the boarding school has an open house and all the parents come to visit their daughters, including Madeline's. Why is she an orphan now? I remember the live action film making her an orphan and that ticked me off, too.
