  • According to Kallidaikurichi Mahadeva Bhagavatar, a torch bearer of the Dikshitar school: "People sing Devakriya akin to Suddha saveri. That is incorrect. There is no panchamam in the avarohanam of Devakriya. It is sa ri ma pa da sa and sa da ma ri sa." Thus it is more about the treatment of the notes, which are more akin to the Hindustani raga "Durga". The other posts in the comments for this video appear to have the wrong aarohanam and avarohanam for Devakriya, entirely, at least according to

  • There is no mess up. Devakriya is completely different from Suddha Saveri and this is clearly Suddha Saveri.

  • Muthuswami Dikshitar composed this song in the ragam Devakriya, as evidenced by the ragamudra tactfully placed in the samashticharanam (bhudevakriyamoda).

It's not that different from Suddha Saveri, so it can be confusing to many listeners (and unfortunately some singers too). In fact it is so close that Devakriya = Suddha Saveri minus Pa (in the avarohanam). Aarohanam is the same for both ragams.

  • @ppadmana I was confused with the ragam that is Aa: S R2 M1 P N2 S

    Av: S N2 D1 N P M1 G2 R2 S; and also has the name Devakriya. Pardon my ignorance.

  • Very soothing and fantastic!

  • how do people do this sort of illegal piracy anyway?

  • tysm carnaticopia this helped me so much as i needed to learn this dumb song for my vocal exam (grde 4) ..... I H8 CARNATIC SINGING BUT MY MUM MAKES ME DO IT! :(

  • sadly thas how carnatic music makes u feel until u realise the taste of it, which you will later at some point. later , You wont regret that u have to learn music with such bitterness. :)

  • very good rendition

  • kiavad: yes, durga is the hindustani equivalent of suddha saveri.

  • Namaste

In hindustani music is raga durga?

    sorry for my ignorant question

  • The arohanam/avarohanam of Suddha Saveri and Durga are essentially the same, although there are minute differences in the styles of the two ragams.

  • It is very good.

  • In the interest of accuracy, I shall change it to whatever you decide. Maybe I'll just say, "messed up" in parentheses.

  • Yes as already pointed out, the kirthi is in devakriya, which is very close to shuda saveri but not the same. Both the viruttam and krithi sound like shudha saveri, only bcoz the singer has totally messed it up :(

  • While I totally agree that the singer has messed up the song big time, Dikshithar definitely composed the song in Devakriya. However I am yet to listen to someone who has sung with the arohanam/avarohanam as Devakriya - the notes for the song always follow Shuddhasaveri - S R2 M1 P D2 S/ S D2 P M1 R2 S instead of S R2 M1 P N2 S/S N2 D1 N P M1 G2 R2 S which is Devakriya

  • "sri guruguha" is not in shudha saveri, it is in the raga devakriya, which is essentially different from shudha saveri, despite the unfortunate fact that the singer has not made it obvious

  • Sri Guru guha is not in Mohanam - it is Suddha Saveri - please correct the title

  • Thanks for the correction. Info has been updated.
