@junjie37 His name is Dawayne Bailey, and he's one of thee most underrated (and over-criticized) guitarists of all time. He's one musician whose playing may be rooted in metal, but the spectrum of music he's encompassed transcends stylistic barriers. (I'm even prepared to mention Dawayne in the same breath with Sting.)
@juantoletemex do you know why they didnt include those 3 songs on and the band played on? I have the tape and its a killer perfomance and it wouldve been great to have those songs.
One more important point....A terrific job in introducing this song by none other than one of Chicago's founding member's James Pankow. James is an American trombone player, songwriter, brass instrument music artist and arranger. (and one of the talented members of the band - Chicago.)
Thanks for posting this video. (hello to juantoletemex)
This song proves in the healing power of good rock and roll music; furthermore the emphasis: "The importance and the simple truth that all of us know. In life's ups and downs of relationships that have gone awry, we all are in this together". "Remember to help someone in need and in turn, you will know that you're not alone".
Thanks for posting this video. (hello to juantoletemex)
"You're Not Alone" is the name of a song written by Jim Scott and recorded by the band Chicago for their 1988 album Chicago 19, with Bill Champlin singing lead vocals and Dawayne Bailey on lead electric guitar; fabulous performance.
Thanks Bill; Dwayne and all of the band - Chicago.
Thanks for posting this video. (hello to juantoletemex)
why do they always pull bill champlin off keyboards to play guitar, when on alot of songs he actually starts on keyboards and then switches??????????????
Incredible! If DB was still with them doing that kind of soloing, I'd be going to the Chicago concert this summer. And that fret board playing and hammer on pull off stuff? You could say that's a tribute to TK since he did it on the CTA album in Free Form Guitar way back in '69.
Both "And The Band Played On" and "Live at the Greek Theater" are on DVD but they are Japanese imports and they are in region code 2 instead of 1 (standard code is 1 for the U.S.) You have to buy a region free DVD player then you can play then like I did. Good luck!!
I Know Bailey's no Kath but he was their next best guitarist, He might be the missing link between Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. Chicago fan's bag this 80's era of the band, But if they didn't change their style to the fashion they would'nt still be here. It was a sad day when they fired Bailey.
Bailey was let go in Jan 1995, not 1993. He played on the entire 1994 tour when the band debuted songs from the big band CD that was released a year later. There's lots of footage from Tour 94 with DB.
i saw chicago a couple of weeks ago, and they played this song that night. bill actually did a guitar solo that was pretty amazing since he's really the organ/keyboard player anymore. he and keith expanded the guitar harmony part for a few more bars too. it was a nice song to throw in to their show.
I pretty sure that this era was the only time Bill really became the frontman of Chicago and got up front and played guitar while the brass played keyboards. Then when Twenty-1's sales were bad, he went back to keyboards. I just had a hunch that maybe that the bad sales of Twenty-1 and Bill's frontmanship declining have something in common. Just something I was curious about.
Ahhh, the days when Chicago became Bill's stooges (complete with mullet hair and allowing play a guitar). To be quite honest, I have a lot of respect for Bill's basic musicianship but just not his voice - he tries too hard on his songs when performing live.
agree with you buddy... sorry to say but terry kath's voice comes out naturally eventhough he overdoes it sometimes. bailey should be in megadeth or anthrax!!!
You're right. Bill really sings too hard and it gets on alot of fans nerves when he does it on a Kath song. But he truly has a good voice.
He did a duet in '86 with Patti LaBelle called "The Last Unbroken Heart" and the way he sang on that was awesome and deep and very harmonic. But I dont know what happened after that. He can truly sing but ever since he joined Chicago he makes faces and whines to songs instead of singing. Idk why he just doesnt let loose and give his voice.
One of my favorite Chicago tunes, maybe THE favorite, from the late 80's. Nice live performance from '92. The four front guys look good, especially Bill C and Dawayne B. Go ahead and rip it up, guys, I love it!
Yeah Jason, Bill, Dawayne, and Robert all looked like true rockers in the late eighties and early nineties. Maybe it was the hair, lol, idk. But they did give Chicago a boost after PC left IMO.
You know - I have a lot of respect for Bill. Terrific singer, terrific songwriter, terrific keyboardist, great arranger. But I really detest it when he over-emotes on these songs. Some times, too much soul, Bill. When he gets into it, I start wanting to make him bran muffins Especially around the two minute mark. Ugh
This version of "You're not alone" has often been critized out in Chicago fanland as one of their/Bill's worst performances ever caught on tape. Now I've finally seen it for myself and.... What's the problem? Bill OWNS it. Killer vocals all the way. He and his R&B approach always turn bland pop songs into something so much more. A great musician at work. Thanks for posting this.
I love this song. It's one of my favorite Champlin-led songs. I think Dawayne went a little too crazy here and sometimes plucked off-tempo cuz of that but it is still a great song. It also gives Lamm a chance to do his keyboard thing alone like it should be. Maybe that's why Dawayne was let go cuz they felt he was too hardcore for the Chicago sound. I bet he thought he was doing just fine too. heh but yeah I love this song and Bill's pretty good at guitar. Rhythm only but good for sure.
Danny Seraphine once said to Champlin, "I'll stop over-playing when you stop over-singing." Now I see what Danny was talking about - Jeez!

@utahdrumtech I agree with you. I feel "19" was one of Chicago's weaker efforts, but this song is great. Wish the rest of this CD was as convincing!
