i was there! my dad is an mod policeman at fairford so me and him were allowed to watch from the fire station next to the run way, its just to the right of the b-52 hangar at the start :D
I used to work not far from Moffett Field in Mountain View, California, and would sometimes see NASA's U-2 take off. Even half a mile away, the engine roar was unmistakable, and it would climb straight out at what seemed to be a 45 degree angle until it vanished into the blue -- like the Millennium Falcon in the first Star Wars movie.
I remember when a U-2 Crashed off the same runway at RAF Fairford in 1995. Couple of my friends worked on the pilot who ejected. One of the wheels wouldn't fall off and the pilot lost control when trying to shake it off.
