It's not that gates are hard, it's that they're pointlessly repetitive with no rewards to show for them. If they had simply made locked gates at key junctions on them map that stayed open once you've unlocked them once; or made each gate slightly different, then I doubt people would complain.
As it is, it's just a blatent ploy to make the game feel longer than it is.
The reward is that you unlocked the thing and can move to a new place. And they very rarely relock. Yes it does happen, but not that often. 90% of gates you open will stay open forever.
Yes, correct. The factions don't matter a damn once you do the side-quest because no-one attacks you after that anyway. The side quest is given to you by that creepy "psi" guy, it's in six or seven parts and after you complete each part you get some "psi power" thing that prevents a certain class of ship from attacking you. Collect em all and no-one attacks you at all unless it's part of the plot, or you initiate it yourself. And bola mines plus the turn-skip module are an I-win button.

I don't know, leapgates are fine with me. I just hate it when you're in a place and other people keep on encountering you.

I know what you mean. There's some side quest you can do that removes all that "encounter" bullshit.

Fantastic. So you could have plenty of factions that absolutely hate you and they would not bother you at all?
Oh and would you agree that Bola Mines are quite cheap?
