The book remains irreplaceable. But, evaluating the film, I can´t be impartial because I am Czech. Miloš Forman did a great job - I think because he had decided on minimalism. Too bad that Ken Kesey didn´t even want to see this version: It may have been very relevant that the director had emigrated from a Communist country. Besides, the actors put their hearts in the project; and this is what your vid eloquently shows. Thank you!
I keep seeing Nurse Ratchet's name spelled with a D at the end, and you're missing the point (not you, Gwen!). Ratchet in English is both a noun (a ratchet screwdriver) and a verb, - you can "ratchet" up the tension, or the fear, or the excitement. So by a slip of spelling the meaning of the character's name .(and she really does ratchet up the hostility and menace in this film) is lost. Great video, Gwen:)
@Honeybowtie Trying to strangle a prefectly innocent woman does not make someone "the man". What does she really do that's so bad? Not give in to all his silly little demands? He's lucky to be in the hospital and not jail, yet he remains constantly ungrateful to everyone and generally manipulates everyone else at the hospital.
@demonbarber14 You`re a fine example of being bonkers,.Find a movie based on reality and come back with some sense,lol,.Nutter. She`s a sick twisted,"manipulative, sad lonely, insecure bag. Come back to earth, you fricking space cadet.
@demonbarber14 You`re saying that bitch is innocent,.You don`t see the pleasure on that bitch`s face when the patients are distressed? You don`t see how she works on Billy? "Lets just get on with our daily routine" Yeah,an 18 year old kid stuck glass in his throat and killed himself, thanks to Nurse Rahtched`s threats.I`d blow my brains out if I were her. Mac gave the patients hope, showed them another side to life. I love Mac`s character,.The chief admired and loved Mac too.
@Honeybowtie How can you tell it’s a look of pleasure? In the book, it describes her somewhat fixed smile, so probably this look is a just what she has been trained to do. I’m not quite sure what specific scene you are referring to, though. As for her calm reaction to Billy’s death, that’s also part of being a nurse. She has been trained to keep a stiff upper lip. I’m sure she blames R.P. for his death. I would be curious to know what you would do if you were in her position.
@demonbarber14 Ya Ya,that`s what I have to say to that. Are you for real? Nurse Ratched turned a blind eye to the patients being sexually abused by the staff. She blames McMurphy for Billy`s death,lol..WTF? She loved to play with Billy`s mind.Billy was a nervous wreck, scared of his Mother whom Nurse Shithead knew well. In her position,,I`d treat them like normal human beings.Allow them to watch a "baseball match":) To relieve your curiosity.I`d be the opposite of her.
I just saw this movie for the first time yesterday and I have to say that nurse Ratched was really not the bad-ass I was expecting her to be. Sure she was stern and kind of a bitch, but really she wasn't all that vindictive or evil. One of the greatest movie villains of all time? Please.
Gwen, how do edit these videos? I am very new to this so please forgive my ignorance. Do you some sort of software that is already on computer or what? How is it done exactly? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
@MrDallasBobby i think it was windows movie maker that came with my computer at the time. the apple version would be iMovie. they're both pretty user friendly and easy to pick up.
Thanks so much for this powerful video, set to the perfect song! I cannot watch this film in it's entirety ever again due to the profound, sad effect it had on me some 20 years ago when I was 17, but I still appreciate the message of it and the marvelous acting. Thanks for encapsulating it so well!
Amazing vid - the music, everything is just perfect. Rarely do the academy give the most deserving people oscars, but Fletcher and Nicholson REALLY deserved them.
Excellent edit :). Watched it all the way through and I hardly ever do that. Also nice to know, from your info, that the chief was the narrator in the book. That totally makes sense. As others have asked, what's the music track? Love to have more of them :).
Great video!!! The music really fits. Most people make videos with scenes from films and the music is just nonsense, you , however, have ht the nail on the head. GO CHIEF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Because they gave McMurphy a labotemy, basically turned him into a vegetable, and the Chief says "I can't leave without you" because he can't stand the fact of him being free and McMurphy being in that hospital like a vegetable for the rest of his life because I think he knows that's not what McMurphy would've wanted. I hope I explained it correctly!
Murphy is given a lobotomy, making him a vegetable for the other patients to see, the chief euthanizes him to put him out of his missery and not let the other patients know what happened to him
because he don't want him to live with completely empty brain which lobotomy have been performed on. His mind was anyway already dead, and believe me, I would also rather die than live like that.
this song, for some reason, fits these clips perfectly, even though it really doesn't set the tone for the movie, nor would it for the book. i absolutely loved this video. and i agree with you, Gwen, that the movie really can't come shy of the greatness of the book. i'd really love to see a movie made that could live up to it, but sadly, i don't think we'll ever have the pleasure of seeing that.
You did a great job at capturing McMurphy's and Nurse Ratched's glares, I liked the movie but I found the book incredibly boring.. nothing really interesting happened in it, and I can usually get into almost any book.
can say whatever but for me this is the best movie of Jack Nicholson's role is not easy believe me jack is a great actor and this movie shows that what is also at work when the role of Batman the Joker also showed its capacity and versatility as an actor
I've been an outpatient and there are still a lot fo mental health workers who like this level of control and manipulation over the patients, just for the sake of having the upper hand. There was a lot of "You're mental but I'm not, therefore I'm right and you're wrong."
This video is great and the song really does fit the characters, When ever i watch the film now or see my poster's of it i have to listen to this tune as it's now part of the film to me.
this was a great montage. you can see in 5 minutes why jack and louise both won oscars for their perfect performances. this should have been the trailer for the movie, but unfortunately gwen wasn't on the scene in 1975!
Like five minutes ago I finished the book and I wanted to refresh the film.

A few more seconds and he could've had her. It's so terrible! They took away the only thing that made him human just because he strangled her. She deserved it.
My favorite movie of all times. I'm totally convinced I'll never see a movie as good as this one. We watched it in psychology, best class ever.
I just finished it and have been thinking about it all day... it leaves you feeling so enraged but still at least nurse Ratched lost and never truly got Mcmurphy's spirit or his following in the ward...
I never thought about it that way, but she never did get McMurphy's spirit? It breaks my heart that she did "win" in the sense that she lived and he died, but she never broke his spirit at least.
It wasn't back then, now they use medication to make it painless though. The old method they wold put you into a seizure so you had no idea it was being done.
I just wanted to tell you that I was heartily inspired by your video. The song is perfect, I'm thinkin of downloading it...but maybe I'll just keep watching this one!!!
Excellent vid and choice of scenes. This is one of my fav books of all time, and tho i'm not quite as pleased with the movie, it's still awesome. Put together very well, and i'm digging the music ^^
can't beat the book, mcmurphy is just such a stunning character, and i will say over and over again, i love jack nicholson but he will never capture how i perceive mcmurphy
@LaJokanan if you have ever read the book you would know that her name is Ratched, not Ratchet

I just finished it and have been thinking about it all day... it leaves you feeling so enraged but still at least nurse Ratched lost and never truly got Mcmurphy's spirit or his following in the ward...

The book is incredible!!

I never thought about it that way, but she never did get McMurphy's spirit? It breaks my heart that she did "win" in the sense that she lived and he died, but she never broke his spirit at least.

the book makes it seem as if shock therapy is painless. i wonder if that's true..?

It wasn't back then, now they use medication to make it painless though. The old method they wold put you into a seizure so you had no idea it was being done.
