It was actually a combined effort. Ganondorf was the cause behind Zant usurping Midna and cursing her to the imp form. It was a chain reaction so to speak. Ganondorf met Zant and gave him power and Zant took it from there.

-spoiler warning here- Technically it was Midna "fooling" Zelda and everyone else through most of the game that she was NOT the twilight princess, even though she was. But; you can think whatever you want, it can have multiple meanings. xD

And even tough she was not in it as much as the others sha made a lot for her kingdom and the people. And then I´m talking about her strong character and her selfless sacrifices.

One of her sacrifices was that she actually saved Midnas life.
