As far as I can tell, the song is about having no further ambition in life but to make a migration to the hometown of the Beatles. (Maybe Kimberly Rew of Katrina & the Waves, who wrote this, can set the record straight on the tune's meaning.) The video was directed by Tamar Simon Hoffs, mother of Bangle Susanna Hoffs. Michael Steele contributes a nice bass line, as always.
I'd be over the back seat and acting inappropriately as fuck if this appeared in my backseat! Great song and they made it totally their own Wonderful!!
Never been a big Bangles fan, but I had to check this video out because of Leonard Nimoy. He is sooo devestatingly handsome in this video! And oh, his hair! And the raised eyebrow! And...I need to leave now :D
leonard said he likes the bangels i think he's always been upfront about his desire for women, he likes the ladies. i like the lead singers looks but i like her hair long. she reminds me of my best friend when i was a kid.
la verdad que este video es una verdadera perlita, las cuatro están brillantes y el papel de un tanto misógino que hace Leonard es excelente!! encantador este video me llena!!
Wireflight. I totally agree with you. I also felt Susanna had the weakest voice of the group. Michell wow she was beautiful and a very solid singer. As for Nimoy, he was suposed to be a friend of a friend who agreed to be in a rather unknown bands video at the time.
After looking at one of the older comments, it turns out that Leo's son, Adam, went to school with one of the Bangles, and he asked his dad to be in the video.
As with pretty much any video out there, there just isn't enough of the phenomenally beautiful Michael Steele. Hoffs seems to be a nice person and she's pretty (MUCH improved with age), and she knows how to maximize her allure -- but Steele got my motor running without even trying. All the Bangles sang well; most of their songs feature vocals by all 4, but a few showcase a particular singer, at least during significant portions of the respective songs.
The significance of the video escapes me but then again so do the lyrics. I do like spock or spook whatever his name is. he doesn't have to say anything he just looks good. thanks
Leaving the mandatory crush on Susanna Hoffs aside for a second (yes, in the 80s all heterosexual males were required by law to be in love with this goddess), I would like to point out how utterly beautiful Michael Steele looks in this video. Unlike in later videos, she is not wearing too much make-up, which fully lets you admire her amazing eyes. Of course the song is great and Debbie makes a fantastic job, but I just wanted to focus on the level of hotness in these girls circa 1985...
From the first time I saw her, I thought Michael Steele was among the prettiest & sexiest musicians ever; all my pals were nuts over Susanna (who I thought was a little TOO thin back then, but she has improved greatly with age). Sad to see Steele go; wish I could have been the thing she was looking for (and that she found me, of course!); hope she's happy.
the song is kinda nice, but the video is wrong. Listen to the lyrics- it is supposed to be about the pleasures of goofing off while getting unemployment benefits. It is not about putting on makeup and getting chauffered around by a movie star
I disagree. There is no pleasure here. It is about one's life wasting away while doing nothing. Incredibly melancholy, which is why the song is so hauntingly beautiful imo.
What is this video about? EASY- 1) "Spock" has cool shades, but obviously (and true to "Spock" form) he is emotionally unavailable. 2) "Spock "has a cool "old school" "whip" for "rolling out" ... but again, he is unable to comprehend exactly what's going on. 3) Cool tune is playing on the radio, and AGAIN- "Spock" is unable to "get it" ( clearly- James T Kirk would have handled this situation in a different manner). And 4) The band ditch "Spock" to dance/play in the sewer of LA.
Actually I think instead of being the limo driver, Leonard Nimoy's character is a guy who turns on the radio and is somewhat perplexed when the Bangles appear in his backseat. He turns off the radio to see if they go away but they don't which confuses him even more, since the whole thing is highly illogical.
The Bangles are definitely one of the best groups to come out of the 80s. "Going Down to Liverpool" was a great song. I'm surprised that it didn't go all the way to number 1. In fact, I believe that with the exception of "Walk Like an Egyptian" that made it to number 1 and "Manic Monday" that made it to number 2, most of their singles didn't climb that much, although they should have. For instance, all of the songs in "Different Light" were in my opinion really great.
Love the Nimoy/Spock moment where he's contemplating over whether he likes this song or not. After much logical thinking he decides its not his cup of tea and proceeds to turn it off. Priceless stuff which both Kirk and Bones would have been proud of. Catchy tune as well by the way.
The video was actually directed by Tamara Simon Hoffs- Susanna's mother, and a mildly-famous indy film director at the time.
Reports at the time said that Nimoy was a friend of the elder Hoffs from the LA film scene.
In 1987, Mom directed daughter in the movie "The Allnighter", which turned out to be a horrible movie that ended Susanna's film career (and pretty well scuppered mom's attempt at being a big-time movie director).
I commented on this vid a way ago and was corrected on the Nimoy directing it thing - it's widely reported but not true. He's also not a close family friend or called uncle. His son, Adam, went to school with one of the Bangles, and he asked his dad to be in the video - that's all.
They do the Byrds such justice. The Bangles...what a great and underestimated band.
