  • They do the Byrds such justice. The Bangles...what a great and underestimated band.

  • As far as I can tell, the song is about having no further ambition in life but to make a migration to the hometown of the Beatles. (Maybe Kimberly Rew of Katrina & the Waves, who wrote this, can set the record straight on the tune's meaning.) The video was directed by Tamar Simon Hoffs, mother of Bangle Susanna Hoffs. Michael Steele contributes a nice bass line, as always.

  • Spock is having some fun...illogical.

  • The bangels are okay; but, Leonard Nimoy is better. Live Long and Prosper

  • He switches off the radio because he knows this song with chart higher than "Bilbo Baggins"! lol

  • I'd be over the back seat and acting inappropriately as fuck if this appeared in my backseat! Great song and they made it totally their own Wonderful!!

  • Hey Susanna, you got any Vulcan in you?

    Would you like some?

  • Never been a big Bangles fan, but I had to check this video out because of Leonard Nimoy. He is sooo devestatingly handsome in this video! And oh, his hair! And the raised eyebrow! And...I need to leave now :D

  • Three vampires...and Michael. Gawd, Michael, again, what a babe!

  • I am not Spock. I am groupie.

  • This is highly illogical.

  • He directed this video as well.

  • leonard said he likes the bangels i think he's always been upfront about his desire for women, he likes the ladies. i like the lead singers looks but i like her hair long. she reminds me of my best friend when i was a kid.

  • i've never seen this on vh1 classic.

  • Why doesn't MY car radio do that?!

  • these girls were great.....i really liked this video

  • did roy hodgson write this?

  • Agreed, Michael was very hot. Loved her not only as a bassist/ singer songwriter, but for the way she moved...purrrrrrrrrrrrr.

  • Señor Spock!

  • Don't touch that dial again Mr. Spock,it's more than your life is worth! these girls are feisty and can actually play their instruments!

  • la verdad que este video es una verdadera perlita, las cuatro están brillantes y el papel de un tanto misógino que hace Leonard es excelente!! encantador este video me llena!!

  • Michael was such a babe. Words cannot expres.......

  • @LTF6161 lol Michael was my fave too

  • All four of them are.

  • Thanks, Youth...wish to fuck I was in that car!!!

  • Thanks for posting. I've not seen this since it came out. I enjoyed it very much.

  • To me is this song the very best of the Bangles. I like the other songs, but I love this song (and clip).

  • These young ladies. Most illogical.

  • Nimoy is such a stud. The older he gets the better looking he gets T_T <3 ugh.

  • When I saw the opening shot, I assumed it was Harvey Keitel.

  • I thought it was Leonard Cohen...lol

  • Nimoy is in the video because he directed it.

  • wow they look so young here :)

  • Wireflight. I totally agree with you. I also felt Susanna had the weakest voice of the group. Michell wow she was beautiful and a very solid singer. As for Nimoy, he was suposed to be a friend of a friend who agreed to be in a rather unknown bands video at the time.

  • After looking at one of the older comments, it turns out that Leo's son, Adam, went to school with one of the Bangles, and he asked his dad to be in the video.

  • As with pretty much any video out there, there just isn't enough of the phenomenally beautiful Michael Steele. Hoffs seems to be a nice person and she's pretty (MUCH improved with age), and she knows how to maximize her allure -- but Steele got my motor running without even trying. All the Bangles sang well; most of their songs feature vocals by all 4, but a few showcase a particular singer, at least during significant portions of the respective songs.

  • .... that's Leonard Nimoy! How the flipping eck did he appear in this song?

  • Scotty crossed the transporter beams....AGAIN....

  • leonard nimoy is or was suzzanna hoffs neighbour where she lived.she knew him well.

  • The significance of the video escapes me but then again so do the lyrics. I do like spock or spook whatever his name is. he doesn't have to say anything he just looks good. thanks

  • are you asleep

  • No, i don't net walk. not that i know of. i will ask my wife, one moment...

  • that was a good comeback the lyrics are about you know the 60's going down to see the Beatles Ub40 in your hand means unemployed....

  • vom 1. und Wissenschaftsoffizier und Botschafter von Vulkan zum Schauffer- was für ein ABSTURZ xD

    Leornard Nimoy your the greatest!!

    the music is ok

  • Leaving the mandatory crush on Susanna Hoffs aside for a second (yes, in the 80s all heterosexual males were required by law to be in love with this goddess), I would like to point out how utterly beautiful Michael Steele looks in this video. Unlike in later videos, she is not wearing too much make-up, which fully lets you admire her amazing eyes. Of course the song is great and Debbie makes a fantastic job, but I just wanted to focus on the level of hotness in these girls circa 1985...

  • Sorry, I'd pay attention to the girls, but I'm too distracted by how sexy Nimoy's stern dad face is.

  • I never realized the drummer was such a decent singer.

  • Mr Spock an der Conn, mal was ganz neues!

  • I wish Leonard Nimoy drove me around town.

    Now that's a bizarre/awesome video.

  • Feh... I wish the Bangles were in MY back seat. 'Specially Mikki.

Spocky was kinda faggy in this one.

  • From the first time I saw her, I thought Michael Steele was among the prettiest & sexiest musicians ever; all my pals were nuts over Susanna (who I thought was a little TOO thin back then, but she has improved greatly with age). Sad to see Steele go; wish I could have been the thing she was looking for (and that she found me, of course!); hope she's happy.

  • which one is mikki... the one on the right?

  • Captain, I find this song to be highly illogical.

  • the song is kinda nice, but the video is wrong. Listen to the lyrics- it is supposed to be about the pleasures of goofing off while getting unemployment benefits. It is not about putting on makeup and getting chauffered around by a movie star

  • @bananacreamanarchy

I disagree. There is no pleasure here. It is about one's life wasting away while doing nothing. Incredibly melancholy, which is why the song is so hauntingly beautiful imo.

  • What the heck is this video supposed to be about?

  • What is this video about? EASY- 1) "Spock" has cool shades, but obviously (and true to "Spock" form) he is emotionally unavailable. 2) "Spock "has a cool "old school" "whip" for "rolling out" ... but again, he is unable to comprehend exactly what's going on. 3) Cool tune is playing on the radio, and AGAIN- "Spock" is unable to "get it" ( clearly- James T Kirk would have handled this situation in a different manner). And 4) The band ditch "Spock" to dance/play in the sewer of LA.

  • I love the way Susanna moves her eyes at 3:04, and how Michael is caressing her bass.

  • You know he directed this. That's why he's in it.

  • I don't even like the Bangles. I watched this for Nimoy. :)

  • "That is not Spock."

  • o yes it is

  • going down to liverpool to watch them finish 3rd every year

  • great coment.....lol, clever

  • "Where are you going with that UB40 in your hand".

Gonna cash me Giro like inni?

  • Many great bands came out of Liverpool. Like The Beatles, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and my fav. A Flock Of Seagulls

  • Bands like this explain why I listened to The Prisoners, Biff Bang Pow and Making Time in the 80's................

  • stfu

  • omg is that spock?!?!?

  • yes, that is Spock!

  • I heard they were going to sing GOING DOWN TO MANCHESTER but they found out it was a shit hole and liverpool were winning all the trophys.

  • Actually I think instead of being the limo driver, Leonard Nimoy's character is a guy who turns on the radio and is somewhat perplexed when the Bangles appear in his backseat. He turns off the radio to see if they go away but they don't which confuses him even more, since the whole thing is highly illogical.

  • just like spock

  • lol, that makes sense. And man do they look cute!

  • That brief break is really annoying!

  • Comment removed

  • For me was "going down to Liverpool" the very best song of the Bangles. Much better then all the other good songs they made.

I played this song so often on my videoplayer. At the end I saw only scratches and snow on the screen.

  • Great catchy pop. Great songwriting. This song just gets stuck in your head.

  • But not written by The Bangles 1983 sung Katrina & The Waves this Song

  • awesome! Thanks for uploading!!

  • It's hard to believe this only got to number 56 in Britain...

  • I remember it getting a lot of airplay.

  • The Bangles are definitely one of the best groups to come out of the 80s. "Going Down to Liverpool" was a great song. I'm surprised that it didn't go all the way to number 1. In fact, I believe that with the exception of "Walk Like an Egyptian" that made it to number 1 and "Manic Monday" that made it to number 2, most of their singles didn't climb that much, although they should have. For instance, all of the songs in "Different Light" were in my opinion really great.

  • B/w Suzanne & Spock: I would of thought that this Video would be no. 1!

  • Love the Nimoy/Spock moment where he's contemplating over whether he likes this song or not. After much logical thinking he decides its not his cup of tea and proceeds to turn it off. Priceless stuff which both Kirk and Bones would have been proud of. Catchy tune as well by the way.

  • How loud is that on/off switch on that radio?

  • The video was actually directed by Tamara Simon Hoffs- Susanna's mother, and a mildly-famous indy film director at the time.

Reports at the time said that Nimoy was a friend of the elder Hoffs from the LA film scene.

In 1987, Mom directed daughter in the movie "The Allnighter", which turned out to be a horrible movie that ended Susanna's film career (and pretty well scuppered mom's attempt at being a big-time movie director).

  • and thats what real madrid going to be doing in 2 weeks...

  • Well, that was predictable!

  • I commented on this vid a way ago and was corrected on the Nimoy directing it thing - it's widely reported but not true. He's also not a close family friend or called uncle. His son, Adam, went to school with one of the Bangles, and he asked his dad to be in the video - that's all.

  • Leonard Nimoy is a family friend of Susanna Hoffs. She calls him Uncle Leonard.

  • is that taxi driver "spocky " from star treck series?:D

  • Nimoy did also direct the video. ;D He's just amazing. And I have yet to understand why I'm so taken with 80s style...

  • I believe Nimoy directed the video too.

  • Mick is the bangle de luxe! Fer sher.

Why is spocky so annoyed? If the Bangles were in MY car singing, I'd be singin' right along with 'em and taking them anywhere they wanted to go!

  • Maybe they're bad tippers.

  • I would never be annoyed if they were in my car. I've also had the good fortune to meet them, so...

  • Micki is so dreamy in this video!

  • I love this song...

  • 'quite logical, captain
