Never even been there. I've worked with SPCA, provincial meat inspection and work with horses on a daily basis and adore these graceful, noble beings. The Only humane ways to put a horse down are to euthanize it or give it a quick bullet if you can't afford Euthanizing. As I read in an article in the local paper, "Americans don't eat horses, Europeans do, and if they want to eat horses, let them eat their own"
These horses aren't just killed, they are prodded and poked for days on the journey, some of them don't even make it that far because they were trampled in the trailer, and the ones that do make it are then stressed and starved, and even though the stun gun usually works, plenty of horses have gone through the processes aware of everything...

I did not, and do not, work in a slaughterhouse. I do, however, have very close ties to the president of the AAEP who personally toured these facilities to check if they were humane for the horses. He is in favor of euthanization (over starvation, of course), and of looking at the consequences of the motion to ban these facilities.

I have never personally taken a horse to slaughter, but there are thousands of horses for which there is "no good use" (not my definition) who face two opportunities... slaughter or starvation. These horses ARE humanely euthanized. They are basically shot through the head, never seeing the gun, and the bullet travels faster than the signals from their nerves. They are brain dead before they can feel the pain, which I consider as humane as it gets.
Well you definetly do NOT know what you are talking about as they do not shoot them here in the U.S. they use a captive bolt meant for cattle and they are shot several times including in the shoulders and several times in the head as this bolt was meant for acttle not horses and does not work proper.

could i just say being a member of PETA and a vegan, yes horses are abused and the slaughter should stop but people seem to forget about animals such as chickens, cows, pigs etc. just because other animals may not be cuddly and cute, they still have feelings and feel pain and fear. What is better for the horse? Underground, unregulated slaughterhouses with untrained staff, or fully regulated federal operations with strict USDA control and training requirements with daily SPCA and public exposure? Walk through a cattle plant, talk to meat inspectors or veterinary professors or even your local large animal vet before thinking with only your heart.

Never even been there. I've worked with SPCA, provincial meat inspection and work with horses on a daily basis and adore these graceful, noble beings. My concern is what happens out of the public eye is often worse than what is. I hate the idea of slaughter, but would rather see it legal and regulated than illegal and unregulated. Neglect is worse than death.

These horses aren't just killed, they are prodded and poked for days on the journey, some of them don't even make it that far because they were trampled in the trailer, and the ones that do make it are then stressed and starved, and even though the stun gun usually works, plenty of horses have gone through the processes aware of everything...

I did not, and do not, work in a slaughterhouse. I do, however, have very close ties to the president of the AAEP who personally toured these facilities to check if they were humane for the horses. He is in favor of euthanization (over starvation, of course), and of looking at the consequences of the motion to ban these facilities.

This is not as cut and dry as it seems. I have never personally taken a horse to slaughter, but there are thousands of horses for which there is "no good use" (not my definition) who face two opportunities... slaughter or starvation. With those options, I would gladly choose the quick and humane slaughter (they never see it coming and it occurs faster than their nerves can transmit pain). Consider carefully your choices when, as is the case, you must choose a lesser of two evils.

There is no such thing as a quick and painless death when it comes to transporting horses hundreds of miles in double decker trucks and the method in which they kill them.Horses are a fight or flight animal and try to avoid this bolt that was meant for cattle and does not work right on horses.

Only the illinois is open right now. NO meat can be sent over seas at all. Horse Slaughter\large livestock slaughter is terrible. I don't eat any large animal meat (cattle, pig, horse, etc) because of the way that they slaughter large animals. Sick horses should be humanely euthanized.

These horses ARE humanely euthanized. They are basically shot through the head, never seeing the gun, and the bullet travels faster than the signals from their nerves. They are brain dead before they can feel the pain, which I consider as humane as it gets.

I have many horses, and have had many diffferent horses all my life. But, we will see alot more of these cruelty cases if they ban horse slaughter in the US. There are just to many unwanted horses and not enough people to take them. Currently where I live you can't hardly give untrained horses away, and it costs more to haul them to the sale barn than you will get for them. These owners will just start shooting them on the farm.

i dont see how anyone in the WORLD could ever work in a place that kills such amazing and gorgeous animals....i dont see how thos ppl live w/ themselves...and i cant belive that there is still a slaughterhouse 4 horses in america 2day...its sickening

We have been working for years to end this.This year is the closest we have gotten.Out of 3 in the U.S(2 in TX and 1 in IL). The 2 in Texas Dallas Crown and BelTex are now closed do to recent court rulings,we now have a bill in Congress to make it illegal here in Illinois.They are on their way out.This will be the year of the horse!2 down and 1 to go!!!!
