Buying expensive stuff is only reasonable when you're making a good investment.
In those cases, you should make sure that you really get something for that extra money, such as increased quality, longer lifespan, if you expect to be able to resell it at an even greater price etc.
In those cases, its cool, but wasting money on things with no practical value is just dumb.
If a girlfriend told me "I will give you an expensive gift, but only if you have sex with me." that would be absolutely awesome and I would do it all the time.
