*cringes* using heavy vibrato while sliding up and down a scale in an attempt to emulate a proper cadenza is just sloppy and gives this aria a violently pedestrian sound... just sayin'...

The best judge is the audience, not the opera specialists who have a different ear and different interests. All the time I read comparisons with Maria Callas. For God sake, if you like Callas then listen to her interpretation. Is opera like in sports?
@nick1729 Whats wrong with that - comparing her with Callas? Many of us find certain similarities. It is just an observation, not about "audiences and opera specialists". If you have a different opinion, that's fine too.
Angela Gheorghiu's dark, heavy lyric voice usually doesn't do well in light coloratura roles. Rossini is not her specialty. Rosina and this aria is suited to either lyric coloratura voices that are smaller or mezzo soprano with mezzo-coloratura like Bartoli or Teresa Berganza. This just doesn't suit Gheorghiu who is better doing Juliette, Marguerite, Tosca, Violetta, but not Rossini opera
@MastersoftheOpera I'm not so sure I would call Rosina a "light coloratura role," it was written for a contralto (and shes singing this in the original "mezzo key," actually), rossini roles call for agility, but his contralto roles are not really intended for light voices, per se.
@skitzo429. The best interpretation is that of Marilyn Horne. Her Bel Raggio is even superior to Maria Callas. This aria is very popular among sopranos and many opera students training their voice sing this in auditions. It's become a staple of soprano repertoire. But like you said, it's either for a contralto or mezzo soprano or mezzo-di-coloratura. I don't like Gheorghiu singing this and prefer Marilyn Horne, Cecilia Bartoli, Federica Van Stade or Teresa Berganza
She sounds more like Baltsa than Callas to me. Especially on this. She's a wonderful artist and singer but can't do it all like Callas did and stay true to the style needed for such diversity.
Thank you very much, Magghot, for this. Only if you could post the entire aria I would be very grateful (if you have it, of course). By the way, Angela is great, as always, and her voice has achieved some mezzo colour here. And I would agree with Swanningaround that Angela often reminds of Callas.
@saigoners I don't know how many of you have heard the true Callas. I have, a number of times, and I love her to bits. However, the one fact about callas, and the point that makes her great, is that she took great risks. They came off quite often, but as the voice aged they didn't. Just cherish the memories. Gheorghiu has a brilliant and passionate voice, the two are different, do not look for differences that are unimportant, just listen and enjoy. If you want to diversify listen to Malfitano.
a "lyric dramatic soprano"? perhaps you mean a lirico spinto soprano; a voice that sings in a more lyrical tessitura but with a bigger sound, more dramatic capabilities, and often darker.
wheres the whole aria?

This is actually really great. I wasn't sure if she would suit Rossini, I really enjoyed this.

@MastersoftheOpera Marilyn horne was probably one of the two or three finest opera singers of the 20th Century.

If you like Callas, you will like Angela. Am I the only one to think there is a similarity between the two.

Yes, maybe a little. But her vibrato is faster..

Yeah ! there's something in the voice of Angela that reminds me Callas...

this is true

No because Callas uses the correct technique of lowered larynx or open throat, whereas Gheorghiu doesn't. It's always forced with Gheorghiu.
