is this something like Phil Spector meets Parliament Funkadelic In England? The guy sang on Hendrix's Axis album amongst many other things. Lots of street cred. Has nothing to prove to anyone. Genius and enjoyable as hell.
I used to see him shopping in mere green BOOTS the chemist, in the 90's. I've since moved to Texas. He still had his big hair, sunglasses and blue and purple streak hair. He always smiled and said hello.
thank goodness for you tube.this only proves what we always said and that was that the 60's and 70's were the greatest of times for music. As we get older we tend to remember things differently but with you tube it is just like yesterday.Keep up the good work
I've been an ELO fan since the mid 70's when as a young teen I discovered Out Of The Blue. Thanks to Wikipedia just last night I "met" Roy Wood, The Move and Wizzard. What an interesting and talented man.
Met Roy Wood in early 90s and chatted alone for a few minutes behind a big tent and stage he had performed on. Nicest guy you could ever meet and happy to give his autograph. Suzie Quatro walked past too. How could she have known I bought one of her records in the early 70s.
Uncle Roy and Wizzard didnt he make some great tunes back then. Glam Rock mixed with a 50s flavour and the Joe Meek sound thrown in for good measure I cant get enough
There was a long delay on the release of this single, it should have been a quick follow up to `I Wish It Could Be Christmas' but I remember Roy had been Ill and there had also been managerial wrangles. Don Arden was about to throw his resources behind breaking ELO in America. Wizzard were soon to be cast adrift !
@BarnsleyTimelord According to a Roy Wood interview, he delivered this for a December release but Warner Bros. sat on it for three months before releasing it.
Looney by the way was Roy's then current romantic interest, Lynsey De Paul (Looney was her nickname).
@njnorth1 Thanks, that's interesting. I did read about that time, that they were together & she was teaching him to read music - in return he was teaching her something. (I'll bet !! Let's not go there!) Wasn't aware of the nickname though. It wouldn't be long before she was in the arms of James Coburn though!
Possibly releasing this In December 1974, instead of in April of that year, might have been a better idea. And thus it may have had a few subsequent annual spins over der festives.
@kirkwallboy: As I recall, Roy was in dispute with EMI over this at the time. It was scheduled for release around September 1973, but EMI changed their minds. Yes, name some other artist who has a courage to have a looks Roy had those days. Usually it means you are nothing in real music business. But in the case of Roy there was under that funny mask an amazing talent !

I think that's Michael Palin, from Monty Python, acting as the Gumby character.
But my first reaction is - the mid-70s was my musical period (SWW, the G Band, T Rex, Mud, Slade, Sweet, Wizzard etc), and I had NEVER heard this song before. Compared to Wizzard's good songs (Are You Ready to Rock, Xmas Everday, See My Baby Jive), this is a totally CRAP song.
Wizzard had an amazing semi- live sound also in their records. When you think that they were performing music which was something like art rock and glam rock mixed. I mean their singles.
I always admired his extraordinary talent, but his visual image never seemed to match his style of songwriting, although seeing him in concert live was always a mind-blower; never quite like the spectacle he purveyed on those ridiculous lip-sinking TV shows. On tour, he and every one of his bandmates were in top form and could give Frank Zappa a run for the money in regards to musical competence on stage. I wish he would come back to the states once in a while.
They don't have any rock edge.T.rex,Slade,Sweet,SAHB, and the New York Dolls are the best Glam i think.Suzi Quatro rocks harder than this.Like his image though.
The guy is a genius - and as such typically got lost between making brilliant, commercial music and the desire to show what was possible if you pushed boundaries.
As much as I like the song, he does look like a cast member of "Cats" on acid.
He didn't take these TV spot too seriously and did a lot messing around because it was fun to see peoples reaction.
BUT
He was in the midst of a string of hits so it must of played well with people in the mid-seventies or at least made a memorable impression that helped sell records.
Instead of presenting Top Of The bloody Pops Saville and his ilk should have been using their time routing out and preventing all the child abuse of the 1970s, and campaigning against the perfectly legal child abuse in schools, children's homes and reform schools that went on.
