you need to be doing a challenge mode in order to get the hologram at the end if you are doing a normal playthrough then there will be no hologram.

Have you actually got the game? Shoot a portal at an unportalable wall. No portal will appear. The definition of using a portal is that a portal has to appear on the wall and is usable. Firing the gun does not equal using a portal unless the portal actually materialises on a surface. If you can't actually use the portal, why should firing the gun be defined as setting a portal even if there isn't actually one on a wall?
