Johnny Gill brings an Alexander O'Nealesque feel to "Fairweather Friend". It's probably to be expected since they're both baritone singers with a husky soulful tone. More importantly, O'Neal used to be in the band Flyte Time with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (who produced the Gill CD that "Fairweather Friend" appears on).
@herkeda stop talking about stuff u dont know. they produced on the cd not ''the cd'' babyface produced this classic along with the other half of the cd and jam and lewis split the other half smh
@peponation Learn to read. I never said that Jam & Lewis specifically produced "Fairweather Friend". I said that they produced the CD on which the song appears, which is correct as they were major producers on the CD (along with Babyface). I wasn't discussing Babyface in my comments -- since my focus was on the Alexander O'Neal/Flyte Time influence -- hence why I didn't mention him.
You know an album, is great when more than 20 years later you can still sing each song on it... lyric for lyric. "Even through stormy weather....time and time again"
this song is just beautiful and timeless no matter how many years go by, once you hear this song you get alil pumped up and get that positive vibe going inside your heart, that man is a true singer and not none of these sad song makers of today, this is real music
@Coolyfett ... No they didn't... Babyface and LA Reid didn't do much for NE as group. They didn't produce or write for them as a group, they were still with The Deele when NE was at their height. You can credit Boyz II Men success to LaFace more than NE.
@MrPZ Mothafucka I know that!!! Face & Reid did some Bobby & Johnny songs but I include those in the New Edition family, stop taking everything and flipping it. I dont give a rats ass about Boyz to Men...Johnny is apart of New Edition.
@Coolyfett Who you calling Muthafucka, Bitch! I suggest you Shut The Fuck up, before I fuck you up and show you a True Muthfucka! Face contributed to 2 of 6 members of NE. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are the ones who did more for the group! I bet you will give a rat ass if I slap shit of out of you dumbass? If you really go calling names we can have a conversation face to face. I suggest you save the name calling to someone else and have a regular reply without calling name cause I aint the one!
BTW Lewis and Jam worked on this album too. They also the ones who encourage BBD to make their album. Also produced NE Heartbreak Album and Ralph's Album. Jam and lewis are the ones who transformed their kiddy sound to a mature sound. That's who is had the more influence on New Edition as group than Baby Face. Bobby Brown is more the creation of Baby Face. which is cool because Face and Reid were pivotal in his success. Yes they contributed to New Edition but they are not the main source.
@MrPZ Dude you are being an internet gangster on a Johnny Gill video......Ok you silly mothafucka? How do you post gangsta comments on a Johnny Gill video? How we gonna have a convo face to face unless you live in Philly? Dont be upset because you get checked for trying to check. I win.
@Coolyfett ... Gangst!? You the Bitch Azz started this shit with calling people muthafuckaz! Distance is not a factor to slap yo Bitch Azz. You didn't win shit. Because my point is Jam and Lewis is pivotal to the NE success than Face. They produced NE Heartbreak and Home Again. They produced most of Ralph's Album, they the ones who encourage BBD, and actually produce more songs for Johnny Gill than Face did. So check that you bitch made muthafucka! Jam & Lewis is the ones who brought NE to age.
@Coolyfett Shut yo Bitch Made Ass up! You started talking shit first with the muthafucka remark. Take yo cowardly ass somewhere! You tried talking tough first... I'm just replying to your BS. Drink Anti-Freeze and Kill Yo Self, Bitch!
@backnthedaydawg Um, that doesn't make sense. A fairweather friend is a person who is only around during fair weather. During the hard times, they bail on you. JG is saying he WON'T be a fairweather friend. -_-
@tsharp32 Because our children have been so desensitized (by music and other forms of media) that they would not appreciate songs of this nature. Believe it or not it's true.
@nicjoy80 You actually compared the two? Chris can't even touch Usher and Johnny's voice blows both away. When CB can learn to catch his breath on stage while performing then mention him.
@Rudie29 Same here, Rudie. One thing we can honestly say is that lived through that era and wouldn't trade it for anything (except for a continuation of that era).
@EFunkRock me either. even though I was a kid...six at the time...i remember it clearly. it was just great and everything was a the height of creativity for R&B...I felt like people were more comfortable with taking risks musically.
@Rudie29 True, plus those risks these artists took back then resulted in work that will always last and sounds better than the crap considered music today.
@EFunkRock Exactly! There are literally a handful of songs that I will remember from this past decade because the state of music right now is beyond tragic.
@lilkeysweet AWWW! She was givin you a message lol! All mothers have a song for their kids...I do my son the same way-he's 11 he just smiles like"ok ma" I love this song, Johnny was so suave in this one.
@cellmate1 So true! Him, L.A. Reid & Teddy Riley had such a staggering amount of R&B hits during the mid-80's-90's...not counting 'Face's solo cuts or Teddy's work w/Guy, either.
hah.... 90's... johnny gill, the most under rated R&B singer ever... blk folks says he is too 'vanilla' or 'cheesy' which i just don't get understand...
This was a tape(back in the day) that you could listen to from beginning to end. I believe he could have had a single for every song. Still one of my favorite songs, and I prefer the album version to the remix.
I always liked Johnny Gill.I remember him singing with Stacy Lattisaw back in the early 80's.I used to play this whole album to death on my WALKMAN.The ones that played the tapes.Does anyone remember those?

I luv this song!Johnny Gill you go boy! That spin outside was owesome Bravo! The Girl in the Glass and the Girl at the End of the Video are Excellent Dancers!Bravo! Job well Done! In the clubs i use to do the Curnel Abrams Shoulder dance,Johnny does it too! Ms.106&Park!
Its very good to hear from a lot of people on you-tube , that the rnb music from the 80´s till mid 90´s was so different compared to the commercialized music that they play nowadays. it was music with feeling, where the music came first and the video later.
This tape brought me through my drive/move from L-Vegas to the ATL. The lyrics, tunes, beats! I became a fanfolife of NE when JG joined. Smooth, smooth, damb, so smooth....
Oh ya, I made it through some real stormy weather - now mostly SUNSHINE!!
CAN'T FIND GOOD MUSIC LIKE THIS ANYMORE, OR A GOOD FRIEND.
