Downtown Milwaukee is nice if you're into authentic German architecture or you like to pretend it's1955, but it's seriously one of the most boring parts of the city after 6pm... and yet our civic "leaders" keep promoting it like it's the end-all-be-all of Milwaukee's culture. If you ask me, the true Milwaukee experience is in places like the Third Ward, Brady Street, Bay View, Riverwest and Walker's Point. Downtown is for tourists, suburbanites and people from upstate.

Milwaukee isn't all that, especially compared to Chicago. But its got some good stuff no doubt. (Hey, at least it's better than Wisconsin's armpit: RACINE, which is basically a scumhole of slime and villainy. LOL!)

@TehSmellulare Racine isn't Wisconsin's armpit... Green Bay is (seriously, on the map it's literally at the pit of Wisconsin's "arm"). Take away the Packers and Green Bay is one of the most dreary, run-down places on earth. At least Racine has the lake and a couple decent bars.

@Devitron5000 Eh, I dunno dude. The lake IS nice, the bars aren't all that to me. I've heard it from everyone that Racine's not very good. Lived there long enough to agree Lotta folks from Chicago come up to Racine because the welfare is better there - that's all I'm saying.

Mad-town and Milwaukee are really the only "nice" cities in Wisconsin. We make up for the lack of big cities with the home-style American towns. Door County in the Summer is paradise.

@TehSmellulare I'm not saying that Racine is on the level of MKE or Madison by any means, but just the fact that its on the lake makes it more appealing than most places in WI. And I prob should've been more specific when I said "cool bars." Basically, Racine's location (btwn mke & chicago) means that they can book better talent (bands, DJs, etc.) than most other places its size. All things consider tho, I don't think I could live anywhere in WI besides mke & Madison (if I went to school there)

We're not a Chicago suburb. Just because its 90 miles away??? Get real. Milwaukee is a major city in the US and has similarities and things in common with Chicago but thats it. Milwaukee is bigger than Boston, Miami, Seattle, Minneapolis, etc... With that said Chicago is a very nice and booming city.

it isnt? anyway if it isnt then it shud be, becuz Chicago does have suburbs in Wisconsin, i think its Racine,Wi a Chicago suburb, but if it isnt maybe acouple years from now the cenus might add Milwaukee to Chicagoland, Chicago's metro is about 10 million right now, adding Milwaukee would add 1 million more people.

No...the hypothectically put Kenosha in as a suburb of Chicago, but its not. Kenosha is in all honesty to far away from Chicago to be a suburb. Kenosha is in Milwaukee's metro area and not Chicago's.

I live in Cleveland and have been to Milwaukee. They are like the exact same city. Both are old, you know. Except Milwaukee is cleaner, buildings are smaller, the job growth is a bit better, and the people were waaaay nicer and could not have been more hospitable to me.  Milwaukee had way more things to do than Cleveland and had more uniqueness.

hahah, i enjoy your humor. you do realize that madison is and has been the top party school according to Effing playboy for like 10 years now, and tons of other studies..also Milwaukee is factually the drunkest city in the nation. The reason why this city looks dead is its probably 14 degrees out and everybody who isnt working is in a bar.

milwaukee is fine, easy driving. im not sure when this was put on, but judjing by the radio it was probly around september of '06. that was during the time milwaukee is dull. so the traffic wasnt bad. otherwise milwaukee is comparable to huston and dallas(if youve ever been to either)

I have lived in Richmond Virginia for the last five years and am in the process of moving to Milwaukee right now, and I think it is much cooler. Can't wait to be here for good!

As far as nightlife... downtown is a joke (unless you're just looking for somewhere to eat). There's some cool spots in the Third Ward, Riverwest, MLK Drive, East Side and Bay View, but those are all kind of off the beaten path (especially if you're not from around here).

Oh thats not completely true. I think things have gotten much better downtown even in the last year. Water Street, Broadway, Milwaukee Street. They're all very lively on a nice weekend night.

To answer your question, there's the Art Museum which has become our equivalent of the Space Needle (just do a youtube search for "Milwaukee Art Museum). There's also plenty of sculptures near the lakefront.

No tram yet. Every few years they try to get the ball rolling on one, but it never gets built because the county (which only cares about suburban interests) refuses to cooperate.

Naw, they've got some big new buildings downtown. Most of the skyscrapers downtown were built post 1977. I mean downtown has some great old buildings, but most of the highrise office towers are relatively new.
