I been wanting to make a movie about the old Richmond Talent shows for ten years now. but cant find the funding. I never thought to look on Youtube for insperation. Seeing my old friend Dorian Jefferson(R.I.P) and little Ralph brought back hell of memories. thanx for posting a part of Northern Cali history playa.
Good to hear from you Brother!!! Long time. I have an original video tape of this routine if you want to get a copy. Or we can turn it into a DVD from VHS and you can use it as you need to. Man, I would like to talk to you more about all of the stuff you've done. Keeping Richmond Dance alive and well. Big Ups to U 2!!! Peace!! Todd B. The "N" in Shields INC!
Wow. I am an original member of Shields Inc. I was talking about the way we used to dance to my daughter and put in a search for Close Encounters of the Funkiest kind and started coming across these clips. Then I glanced over and saw our Yellow and Red uniforms. I told my daughter "that's us!!!" Man, thanks for the memory. I didn't know that video was out. There are only two of us left. Tremendous. Thanks again.

Let's Go
Hello all- This is yo boy DUBB- I am one of the original
members of the #1 group of our era 1980-84
"THE GENTLEMEN OF PRODUCTION" straight out of West Oakland. The Boogaloo originated out of Oakland and that's a fact. What yall know about Mosswood Park
Ha! Ya'll GOTS to get some footie up. I know you must have some classics.
Also, do you know if anyone has footage of that big scottish rite talent show where Close Encounters came outta retirement? I remember you guys were in it.
Demons of the mind was the 1st group I seen that helped me and my cousin turn parties out all up and down Highway 99.State Fairs, Car shows and anyone who wanted to pop was subject to the style we perfected in Merced. Monte/Nardy b.k.a. THE BLOODVILLE POPPERS. Someone out there has a video of our shows and I wish we could get them. Poppin Taco, Crazy Legs and their crew got the movie before we did, but they felt our impact when they hung out with us in Merced. Peace! Monte'
The reason why PopTart, Fayzo cannot do it is because they came on the scene in the middle to late 70's. They are strutters. The Resurgents came much earlier and combined boogaloo with stepping. When you look at the "1980 Electric Boogaloo" youtube video these are the type of moves you would have witnesses at the Oakland talent shows in 74, 75, 76. The only difference is you would have scene much better performances at the Oakland talents shows.
The funny things about this video is that the EB's are not even doing Boogaloo, They are creepin, doing puppet, popping, etc. Everything you see them do in this video was a direct rip off from Oakland and a poor one at that. True Boogaloo is something that Chuck, and Will and Vic Randolph can do. Even the moves you see the later EB's do is very similar to what some of the cats in Oakland were doing in the early to mid 70's.
the baddest group to boogaloo and robot was the BLACK MESSENGERS .they set the tone 4 cali dancers and beyond if it was not for the Messengers ther would not be no poppin,or pop locking because east oakland had the best dancers with groups like 1+1,exzotic movement, soulful movements.aces of soul, black resurgents,pt 3000 im glad that the dance went world wide in diffrent people added their style to what east oakland started i thank L.A 4doing their popping and locking that why the west is tight
west coast is still holding it down yall need to understand the history about the dance that came from east oakland and the only way 2 understand the dance is to dill with 1 of the OG's from the Messengers are the black resurgents are pt 3000
You still haven't answered my question, how is Boogaloo Sam the sole creator of "boogaloo" style if he already knew of and was influenced by a style called "boogaloo" in Oakland? "Electric Boogaloo" is not the same as "boogaloo", according to the EB's. Sam claims to be the sole creator of "boogaloo". Also, Fillmore is spelled with two L's.
I haven't seen one person from the Bay that can do "Electric Boogaloo" the way the EB's do....they have their own style. Whether it was inspired by the Bay or not. IMO Oakland Boogaloo is the same dance Sam saw and was inspired by...a lot of it is in there still today, but it is NOT the same exact dance. When I asked Pete, Skeet, Wigz etc.. about Filmore, Struttin, etc...they didnt claim it, Skeet would show me a basic feel of it and then say "Go learn it from Pop Tart and Dana and them cats"
Also, when PopTart and Fayzo...even Black Ressurgants and them try to demonstrate Popping and Electric Boogaloo it is off, they cant do it like Sam, Pete, and Skeet. Like any dance you have to study it, work hard on it, be around the people who are the illest at it. So claim what you do...Filmore, Strutting, Boogaloo, Electric Boogaloo, Popping etc. There is no one person that can claim EVERY style. Get over it and move on already. Its not that hard to understand.
Yo jrock! when have you ever seen me do electric boogaloo? you have never ever seen me do electric boogaloo at all whatsoever... I am a Strutter for Life, been dancing since 1972 that Is what I do...and trust me that Is what I claim.
So why are you dropping my name into shit that you know you've never seen me try to do?
How is Boogaloo Sam the sole creator of "boogaloo" style if, he already knew of and was influenced by a style called "boogaloo" in Oakland? "Electric Boogaloo" is not the same as "boogaloo", according to the EB's. "A lot of people ask what Electric Boogaloo style is. Electric Boogaloo style is combining popping and boogaloo style together. The two styles compliment each other well and is known worldwide as the signature style of the EB's. "- From the Electric Boogaloos homepage
My comments about "Boogaloo" were in response to the misinformation and lies being perpetrated by Mr. Wiggles and co, playing semantics games saying "we say this is a fact
BOOGALOO STARTED IN NYC
PERIOD:) " "me, Stretch, Poppin Pete, Moncel and a few other brothas have been diggin into this topic for a few years now, and all concluded that the original Boogaloo is from NYC " "BAY AREA BOOGALOO (if it is based off of the above clip) is def based off the original BOOGALOO"
"Boogaloo or bugalú (also, shing-a-ling, Latin boogaloo, Latin R&B) is a genre of Latin music and dance that was popular in the United States in the 1960s. Boogaloo originated in New York City among teenage Cubans, Puerto Ricans and other groups. The style was a fusion of popular African American R&B and soul with mambo and son montuno. It included the use of English lyrics as well as Spanish. Boogaloo entered the mainstream through the American Bandstand television program." LIES???
No footage of The Androids or the Ashtrons? Androids was a hella dominant Richmond group wasnt they? Seems like sum1 gota hav an old tape sumware w/ those 2 groups.
Actually, when I spoke to Chuck from Black Messengers...he said the Boogaloo from oakland had nothing to do with latin Boogaloo. He said the first group he saw doing it was called 1+1 (one plus one). The Bugalu from the east coast was something different to totally different music. I find the truth lies in the middle of the road...not all the way on the EB's side and not all the way on Fayzo's and companies side. Its in the middle if you do the research. I never stopped researching this topic.
And for the record, Ive always loved all styles. Ive learned so much over the past 15 years of living this dance as a new schooler. But Ive also learned that bitter rivalries still exist between OG's and can taint the truth. We're all human. Its takes us new school cats who just love the dance to sort through the info and find the truth. I think these groups are some of the coldest dance groups ever....the EB's deserve their place in history too...they had their own style just like every group.
The hate has to stop on both sides. Being a younger dancer that is not part of the rivalries (we have our own this generation!! LOL), we can see the beauty of both styles, the rawness and funkiness of all the different group's styles. What really is catching everyone up is the terminolgy. Popping, Poplockin, Struttin, Boogaloo...those are just words. But realize that the styles that are being done are all very different. They have influenced eachother...no doubt. But the differences are there.
Ive had the privilege of learning from the EB's for nearly a decade now...and they have never claimed credit for the Bay area's styles, they also never claimed to be experts of the styles from the bay. On the same tip...Ive had the privilege of learning from PopTart, Dana..perform with the Black Ressurgants, interview countless OG's including Chuck from Black Messengers etc...and I see their style, and understand it better now. I truly believe it is the ROOT of Funk Dance...that started it all.
Even the groups dancing in this clip ALL DANCE DIFFERENT! If you threw the EB's in there, they too, would look different. If this group called their style struttin, another group called their style Flmore, another group called their style Popping. Its just a word that represents their groups signature style. Turfin, Flexin, Krumpin....this generation has the same problem. History repeats itself.
Hey I know this sounds a bit out there, BUT, Chuck said it was on the new documentary that Thomas Sanchez has been showing. I guess since Chuck is on there he got to see the vid. Thomas is not saying when it is going be available for purchase.
Thanks Lanier! Although I have to give credit to my man Mistaecko for providing the documentation, which ultimately debunked these lies being spread by Mr. Wiggles and co. I just hope people will read this so that they will know what's up. "Boogaloo" Ames moved to Detroit and worked with Barry Gordy for Motown, which would also explain how the Boogaloo term made its way to the midwest region, where Tom and Jerrio introduced their hit single "Do The Boogaloo" to a national audience in 1965.
There is also a letter written in Oct. 30, 1939, by Mary J. Phillips of Darien Georgia, where she used the word "boogaloo"
This is the earliest usage on record so far of the word "boogaloo" to describe someone. Notice in all documented recorded cases, they have a common theme.
1)They all refer to a free spirited, happy-go-lucky, or free flowing person.
2)They all refer to African Americans
3)They all refer to people or origins in the Midwest or South. NOT NYC or Latin America!
I agree Lanier, Boogaloo appears to be an offshoot of "Boogie" or "Boogie Woogie" which was used to refer to A free flowing form of dance and piano playing style in the South during the period around WW1. Peace.
Not even worth arguing about this because no matter what you say they will just twist it in a way that benefits them monetarily.
I personally think that Sam filmed the Oakland Talents shows that took place at the Oakland Auditorium in 74,75,76. Because a lot of the moves they were doing in the late 70s and 80s were a direct rip off from all the different styles that people were doing in Oakland in the mid 70s.
I also heard from Chuck that Sam is mad at Thomas Sanchez because Thomas found the cat who taught Sam how to dance, who happened to be from Fresno as well. That kind of debunks the theory that Sam created Boogaloo.
How is wiggles going try to justify something that he really knows nothing about. If he grew up in Oakland and experienced this dances in its creation he would realize how moronic this all sounds.
I got chuck on the phone and after relaying this new twist events he says wiggles done bumped his head. I say EB's have more twist and turns on the truth of who created Boogaloo then Kung Fu has moves.
In the new Thomas Sanchez documentary he talks about a group called One Plus One. Which was the first Boogaloo group out of Oakland that started in the 60s. I am fairly certain they were dancing to James Brown, not to some so called Latin boogaloo beats.
An YEAR later, In 1966 NYC, Ricardo Ray (aka Richie Ray) and Bobby Cruz, hopped on the bandwagon and became the first Latin music artists to directly give the R&B "boogaloo" a Latin rhythm makeover, dubbing it "the bugaloo" for his album, Se Soltó, in order to win over the black audience in America (and was accepted by Black Americans as an adaptation of an ALREADY existing "Boogaloo" scene). American Bandstand introduced "Boogaloo" to young White audiences, not the Black community.
The Boogaloo term was coined before 1966. First song to use the term "boogaloo" was 1965, R&B Duo Tom and Jerrio out of the midwest region in the USA. This song became a NATIONWIDE hit in the black community and "boogaloo" became part of the slang vocabulary of young Black people at that time.
An YEAR later, in 1966 NYC, Ricardo Ray (aka Richie Ray) and Bobby Cruz hopped on the bandwagon and became the first Latin music artists to directly give the already existing R&B "boogaloo" a Latin rhythm makeover, dubbing it "the bugaloo" for their album, Se Soltó in order to win over the black audience, and was accepted by Blacks who saw this as an adaptation of an ALREADY existing "Boogaloo" scene. American Bandstand introduced "Boogaloo" to young White audiences, not the Black community.
I know this is propaganda by the EB's and their associates (Buddha Stretch) because they have been pushing this topic on the forums. I just PM'd you the actual thread.
Hey Lanier, the term "Boogaloo" wasn't used in New York first. That's misinformation/lies being spread around by Mr. Wiggles to try to take away from Oakland's legacy. The first documented use of the term "Boogaloo" was in Darien, Georgia, USA. in 1939. Not in New York, or Latin America, but in the south. There is no evidence showing NYC using the term "Boogaloo" (or bugalo) prior to Tom and Jerry-O's hit single "Boog-A-loo" (1965) to coin their dance/musical movement in Spanish Harlem NYC.
One of the earliest applications of the term "boogaloo" seems to center on "boogie woogie" pianist Abie "Boogaloo" Ames who, according to the Washington Post's obit, received that nickname in the 1940s. BTW, Abie "Boogaloo" Ames was born in Georgia, USA. , not in NYC. nor anywhere in Latin America (Puerto Rico)
this video is worth a million dollars.this is great for people who were not there, and great memories for people like me who were there.only ones missing are the ufo's from berkeley.
I been gettn @ my man V who was th leadr of UFOs to post vids. He got hella footage of thm an other OG bay area cats includng Mr. Fantastic who beat Boog Shrimp on stage at the Oakland colliseum.
I know man i couldnt believe my eyes either but thats y im posting this shit cuz im sick of all the bullshit liars out there... and i have even more footage i just want this stuff to sink in everyones heads first...
So boogaloo started in Oakland not Fresno...So original boogaloo looks more like poppin than what Pete and Sam do....they stole that name? thats fucked up and they're claimin to everybody that they created boogaloo or poppin period...they aint right for that one... these guys are my new heroes right here...
where did you find this shit dammm that sit takes me way back classic classic classic rep that true bay what they know about speedin them records up to 45 so sic so sic love it keep those classics coming yeeeeeeeee
i'm crying right now!!!!!!!!!! THATZ THE LOST ART.....take off those HUSH PUPPIES n GO GET SOME KUNG FU SHOES [with the white soles] and a HAIRNET!!!!!!!!! 45rpms BOYYYYYYYYYYY
Now. My challenge to all of you doubters out there is to find footage of the EB's early routines and you will see that they look exactly like the footage that you saw here. They bit off of the Bay Area. Period.
The EB's may have been influenced to some extent by the Bay but Sam's boogaloo looks different from the Oakland boogaloo. They just share the same name.
You old fogies need stop inter-web bangin.. Who gives a shit who created when and where?
You should know by now that white people created all this??? lol...

Now. My challenge to all of you doubters out there is to find footage of the EB's early routines and you will see that they look exactly like the footage that you saw here. They bit off of the Bay Area. Period.
mistaecko 3 years ago
The EB's may have been influenced to some extent by the Bay but Sam's boogaloo looks different from the Oakland boogaloo. They just share the same name.
