Girl I'm a break dancer and I'm practitioner of Capoeira I must say your video is Awesome and I learn some thing today : ) Girl your instruction is great : ) XOXOXOXO
is doing a handstand on the wall and then pusing urself up and down a good practise for no-wall handstands? I dont think that the strength is my problem, i can do about 10-15 pushups in a handstand on the wall, its more the balance i think, but does training strength train that too?
Thanks for posting some great tutorial vids..id learnt how to fall out of a handstand through trial and error way before i found this vid which was a pain (haha) :( and am now struggling to keep my balance once there. id love to be able to do a press handstand one day... any tips would be REALLY appreciated :O) - ps, keep posting x
That can work for those with enough arm strength to support their body weight with one hand...but this is not accessible for many yogis. Still, I use it sometimes to re-balance me. If you're pretty strong in your handstand, I'd try it. Namaste!
@CryForZack Thanks for this great domonstration. I have always been afraid of doing handstands away from the wall due to fear of falling over backwards. Now all I have to do is lean to one side and bring the foot down.
@CryForZack I did that once, and collapsed onto that one hand and injured the wrist. NOT a great idea, and it took me out of practice for almost a month.
wow this is so hot lol irrellevant...anyway I've only ever seen pics/vids of lightweight (under 190 lbs or so) people doing this. I have good upper-body strength and can do plenty of handstand pushups using a wall, but a full handstand is extremely difficult for me (perhaps in part due to always starting with my head on the floor). has anyone seen this done by anyone over 200 lbs? if so their shoulders must be huge lol....
I'm 229 and I can do them, I'll put a video up in the next week or so. I'm not the best, as I've only been practicing a few months, but not bad :)
All you need to do is start practicing your handstands! Search for the user "portaldo" and watch his beginner locomotion training video. That's how I started, and I'm consistently holding 6-15 second handstands without having to take a step. Now I am starting to press up into them.
ya I'm getting it now. where I practice them now the ceiling is low enough that I can brace myself on it with my feet. I've been taking the tension off (to do them normally) for seconds at a time and then returning until my shoulders and arms give out. man, it's a surprisingly great upper body workout, especially for the shoulders. I've always trained with weights, but it would seem there is no substitute for bodyweight exercises (like the handstand) when it comes to overall strength training...
For upper body exercises, it is scientifically proven that no exercise with weights can produce the same or better results than bodyweight work, especially on gymnastics rings. Closed kinetic chain work simply recruits more motor units than open chain work, which includes all weight lifting. Doesn't make the weights worthless, but the bodyweight progressions are more difficult and produce better overall results, especially in terms of strength development.
well I'm not an olympic powerlifter but ya I won't ever ditch the deadlifts. other than that though, I've gone totally bodyweight and I feel stronger and more explosive than ever...even after years of lifting for 2 to 3.5 hours a day. an hour a day (tops) is all I need now to turn my muscles to play-dough....
Great video. Just like all your videos. The only problem is you assume we can do a cartwheel! Can you do an instruction on how to do that? (All the other u-tube cartwheel instructions are for 75 lb 11-year old gymnasts.)
well I'm 23, 195 pounds and last time I tried I could do a cartwheel. the method of doing them wouldn't change regardless of your age, weight, and gender. just practice...
cuz im hiphop we got a new teaacher this year and we need to be able to do handstands...cuz my back is kindof flexibal...but i just fall strait back like a board. lol anywayz than this helped alot...
oh hellow again miss Sadie, i havent used a wall at all, but i been exercising my pectoral muscles, abs and glutes and rib muscles hoping they would help me do a better handstand, which they did just a little, i can only last for like 5 seconds but if i put all my strength on my arm and hold my breath and tighten my belly i can manage to stand a little longer, sometimes i may get lucky, but the same problem, i have no control over my lower body.and i sometimes over kick, any suggestions?thanks
Keep your legs in alignment and your navel into your body so your belly doesn't release and make your back curve. Watch my Core Handstand video too. Good luck!!
wow seriously thank you ive been a .....sorry for the languange but a real pussy.....when tryin this now i see the difference im way more confidante...(aint sure its good, the word confidante)
Glad this will help to free you! You haven't been a pussy--you've just been smart--doing the handstand without knowing the escape plan can be dangerous, so you were right to hesitate! Now go ROCK it!
thanks very much for sharing. do you have an escape plan for headstand...i am trying to overcome my fear of falling and breaking my neck and sometimes i can get up halfway. however the 2 times i extended fully inspite of my fear, what did i do? topple over. i don't want to go back to that place where am too scared to even try it again. please help.
Use the wall for headstand, but get up really close to it so there's no room to topple over. You need a little room for your hips to move back to counterbalance your legs lifting. Watch my Core Headstand video, and do what it says to build strength and capability in the pose...it sounds like you're not directing the pose from your arms and core enough, but you have to build that over time. let me know how it goes! xoSadie
thanks so much Sadie, i will try it and let you know how it goes....i believe you are right (after watching the core tastic and 101 headstand, i've realised i was doing at least 3 things wrong - coming up with straight legs instead of bent knees so my alignment/big booty is all over and then letting my booty move back and not engaging the navel enough). my new mantra is going to be navel navel/ core core instead of please don't let me fall. :)
thank you for posting this! i am studying modern dance but am TERRIBLE at handstands because i flipped over once and am freaked out about hurting my back. i'll practice this escape plan though and hopefully conquer my fear!
Yes, well, in Gymnastics, they need a different body shape in their handstands, and also, a TON of injuries happen because of the gymnast's body. I get so many ex-gymnasts and they're just wrecked. This handstand is in exceptional alignment for the human anatomy...and I stand by it. My students can not only finally get up, they are not injuring themselves trying to do to.
Just keep trying--and keep your arms stable first priority. Don't let your arms move, and hop lower until they're stronger. You'll get there by backing off. If you're falling, that's too much too fast. Good luck!
what a cool and obvious(on hindsight :( ) idea. wish i'd thought of it before all the scratched and bruised skin appear on my back. haha thanks for your videos, they're cool!
thank you ! i have been doing it exactly as you are teaching without knowing it is the correct way to learn hand stand. great video instructions . thank you for you teachings.
once again Sadie you have shown the light to get me through my fear of falling from this difficult pose. I find that by the simple act of kicking up my legs and also doing push ups with my feet on a chair, this gives my arms and shoulders strength to maintain the hand stand. I wonder what Patanjali would have said about the handstand?
Graceful response to these replies, Sadie. I have been practicing for 14 years and teaching for 10, and I have had several "light-bulb" moments watching your videos. Thanks for the inspiration. Namaste...
Actually, you can do it either way. It's just that if you get up from standing, you have to use a lot more momentum, and your core and stability can get overridden. It ends up being a more chaotic, less controllable pose. I know because I did it both ways for years...
