Once in awhile I watch her videos, I enjoy learning what my relatives ate during the depression. Thank you Clara for your delightful videos that take me on a trip through memory lane.
Just beautiful! People like Clara are a treasure and we need more like her to teach survival skills. Sadly most people are sorely lacking. I am young but grew up on a farm and we were taught to be self sufficient. I am so thankful for those skills.
I have a very large family. Clara's cooking really helps us cut our grocery budget and still make healthy, delicious meals the whole family loves. Thank you, Clara!

Chef David Wolfman is a Culinary Teacher at Humber College in Toronto and has done many fusion recipes with people of various cultures and nationalities including an Italian guest. I'll bet someone has brought you to his attention already. That would be a great episode - Clara and Chef Wolfman - Frugal and Fabulous" Many blessings
Hi Clara - I just discovered your videos - I was raised in an Italian household and although both my parents are gone now the fabulous and frugal meal memories linger. I wish my mom was still around so I could show her your videos. I have come across many nationalities and cultures over the years who also have frugal and fabulous meals. Also very good ones from First Nations Communities. Have you ever thought about doing a show with Chef Wolfman?? He has his own show on APTN.
I Just came across season 8 today and I am glad to see that you celebrated your 96th birthday recently. Happy Belated Birthday and now I am going to watch the rest of your videos.
God Bless you Clara. You're an inspiration to me and others. You remind of my own dear mom who passed a few years ago. As kids, we grew up watching our budget and making similar meals. I helped in the kitchen and mom taught me so much. She told me many stories of depression era meals. Today, I still enjoy making meals like yours. Not only are they good and nutritious, but they bring back many warm memories of my mom. It makes me feel like my mom is still here with me. Thank You Clara!
I learned a lot about cooking & sewing from my grandma. She died at 91. I miss her still. So glad to run across this channel. Brings back memories. I'll definitely try some of these recipes. They'll be added to grandma's recipes. It's time again to cook as cheaply as possible.
I ordered Clare's cookbook and received it this morning and made the Lonely Meatball and sauce for dinner. We couldn't stop eating it ! It was delicious ! There's no leftovers today. The whole dinner took about an hour but, it was sooo worth it ! We also had the Simple Cake . It was gone in 10 minutes. I'm already thinking of things to add to the cake for a different taste. Thank you Clare, you little red cookbook will stay in my kitchen.
I like it. Similar to some of the things my Grandma used to make. One thing: an easy way to improve this recipe many times over is to use frozen peas instead of canned. The difference in freshness and taste between the two cannot be overstated.
@TheBrewchief i have an honest question: is frozen peas the most fresh you can get? I mean, is there a way to find peas that hasn't being peeled yet? not frozen, just really fresh?
@capchio Absolutely! Try your local farmer's markets. Farmer's markets are great, community places to get a variety of fresh organic produce and to get gardening tips if you have room to grow them yourself. Even if they don't have shelling peas (which are in season in Spring and Fall depending on where you live), there's a good chance you could find out where you can from them. You might also try a Whole Foods or an H-E-B Central Market, or whatever organic grocery store is in your area.
@TheBrewchief Oh that's great since I'll be moving to the US for 4 years, and food is one of my major concerns, I come from a country with great variety of cheap fresh food, I don't think my body could take a lot of processed stuff. thank you!
@capchio Excellent! You are definitely doing your body a service by limiting your intake of processed foods. Organic produce is generally more expensive than non-organic (pesticides are used), but it can be worth is on foods where you eat the skin, like celery or peaches and in things like meat, eggs, and milk, where the animals may otherwise have been given hormones or fed GMO feed to enhance their production/growth. There is still a lot of debate about the long-term effects on human health.
@TheBrewchief thats true but these are meals from the depression, so canned peas would be the cheapest and easiest to find, thats why shes using them.
@TheBrewchief i totally agree im always trying to find out how-to-make-it-better with recipes i come across, i just thought about your comment (during the depression times) & they didnt have frozen peas unless they barried them into the snow during the winter, thats why shes using canned, but in general (during our times) its a great idea & i hate CANNED ANYTHING! lol im a home cook who loves to cook from scratch and all fresh fruits & veggies but i love clara & hearing about back then from her
@haexkae42008 That's true. I guess it's hard not to want to impose one's "how-it-can-be-done-better" know-how sometimes. That, combined with my considerable disdain for canned peas and canned spinach (though I love 'em fresh or frozen) and I had to put my two cents in. She's definitely got solid culinary skill, kind of gives you the feeling she's never let any of her family go hungry like she was as a girl.
@TheBrewchief As Clara says "Anything to save anything" Certainly, if one has the money, they should go for the frozen over the can. But a can of peas can be less than a dollar, a bag of frozen can be a few dollars. For a family who really needs to pinch pennies, those few dollars might be needed elsewhere.
@simpfan666 There's no arguing with that. Even cheaper (in the long run, despite initial expenses of some fertilizer or compost and seeds--seed prices can vary but can be a one-time expense if seeds are collected and dried for planting the next year, or anytime in a greenhouse) if you can would be growing your own peas in a clay pot or in a garden. I tried to grow some this year but we are in a horrible drought in Texas and it was just too hot and dry...they withered up despite my best efforts.
I started watching these videos last fall/winter when I didn't have much money. It gave me some good ideas on how to make things last and make the most out of everything
Pasta = complex carbohydrate, Peas = protein. Simple, nutritious, smart. You deserve to be applauded for providing this first hand insight into history! Thank you.
I'm going through my own depression, Clara's recipes are the only way my family gets by. I've been out of a job for 4 months now, we're hardly surviving on a single income. Thank you Clara for these recipes, you are a life saver.
@frogpollen im so sorry to hear that. my heart goes out to you and your family. i really hope that things get better i really really do. they will. xx
@frogpollen seriously I think you should consider getting rid of your internet you'll save more money, unless you are using it to pay bills, otherwise I feel bad for you I wish you best of luck in finding a job and recovering from own great depression.
I take care of a 96 year old Italian/American woman in Staten Island NY, and she makes me make her pasta with peas all the time. She loves it! She didn't tell me it was depression food, though. I guess some memories are bitter sweet.
Ubuntu comes from an uncontacted village in Zimbabwe. Ubuntu's people lived on each other's waste for generations. A five course meal for Ubuntu's people was flies, bugs, worms, grubs and shit...paired with fecal wine. And Ubuntu can say this "food" makes Ubuntu want to vomit. UBUNTU

I am 24 years old single guy, living on his own, and I was getting really tired of frozen dinners, and fast food. I just want to say thanks for your recepies, they are a life saver, and thank you as well for being so kind enough to share your stories. Have a great day
your pasta with peas dish brought back memories of my mother. one of our standard vegetables was canned peas. peas weren't one of my favorite vegetables but you sure make them look good. thank you for sharing your stories, your wisdom & showing simple, hearty & healthy ways to eat. when i was little my mum used to make homemade pasta & it would be hanging on coat hangers all over the house. & we would enjoy the fresh noodles.
Im surprised that she didnt have to make her own pasta. I knew a woman in a nursing home. She did a demo on how to make pasta. She said in the 50s that everyone had to make their own bc you couldnt go to the store & buy it yet. It wasnt mass produced. She thought buying pasta was a luxury bc she had to get out the pasta machine & make it all by hand & dry it.
wow! your a really good cook and I love how you tell us all about your past and stuff.(: You seem really sweet too!<3 I am acually starting a cooking channel if you or anyone else wants to check it out! I just uploaded the first video today!(:
My girlfriend cook pasta with peas for me all the time. I ask her..."what's for dinner" she says "pasta w/ peas, pasta with garlic, pasta with beans!!" LOL we both adore Clara.
I love Clara! She reminds me of my Oma (German for grandmother, she lived 1900-2003). My mother was born in 1922 and told me the depression was very, very hard. Thanks to those who made these videos possible, I have enjoyed every one of them.
Your a delightful lady and you remind me of my Grandmother. I could sit and listen to your stories for hours, and enjoy your great cooking! God Bless you Clara!
I am off to the kitchen to make "pasta with peas". You are lovely woman sharing your knowledge, born from a most important and significant time in your life. What a pleasure it is for me to have found your channel. Thank you and I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.....now...off to the kitchen I go!
@veggievillan Fresh produce under a dollar per pound? Where do you live to get such awesome prices?? Where I live the cheapest produce is usually around $1.50 per pound, and that's usually boring Red Delicious apples.
@bunnyshooz ha! for real, I'm from Peru and yeah, you can get 10 huge bananas for 20 cents! (in u.s. dollars!) fresh products are the cheapest, processed ones are expensive.. I would tell you more but i'm not sure how heavy a pound is, we use Kg
the way she's cutting that potato, well, it would make me anxious if i saw anyone cutting it like that D: but she's 91 and i'm like "omgomgomg don't die i want to see this recipe"
Thank you so much for the recipe. Today's my grandmother's birthday and she's at the hospital. So I'm going to surprise her with pasta and peas when I visit her!
Aw this woman is so charming! She reminds me of my grandmothers, my maternal one that cooks everyday and my paternal one that is stuck in a wheelchair, but whenever I cook with my mom or my dad, they always talked about how my paternal grandma would make them pie, spare rib soup, stroganoff, she would have been a really good grandma. But she got a stroke when I was about 2, so I don't remember her before the stroke that well. I'm just lucky she's alive.
The great thing is you can make these recipes with items found at the dollar store and save even more money if you need to save your pennies and these are great recipes too.
you know that looks really nice thoe the only thing I would change is that I would drain the pasta water so that the pasta was alittle more dryer lol but all in all it looks like a tasty dinner or breakfast lol i eat werid things for breakfast sometimes :)
Thank you for going through the Depression and imparting your wisdom, stories, and cooking! Much needed in our times! So much love to you and your family!
Clara seems like a good, decent, honest woman, and very respectable. She also moves very carefully and takes her time. These videos are appropriate for our times and it's nice how each video has a small clip of her reminiscing about the past. Women like this hardly exist any more. Imagine in 75 years some of these dumb, ignorant, classless baby-mamas trying to make videos like this. They wouldn't - they will still be on Youtube clapping their asses. If we make it that far. Down with the Fed.
my eyes are so full of tears, to the youth out here, you should really take heed to this because here is what you call ''a real woman'' god bless her heart. she can cook, clean, healthy, sweet, busy, she gets things done. at 94 she is still at it., a true definition of a woman, she is so cherished and probably don't know it, she probably don't care either. woman like this don't need to fit in or pretend, they are home-makers with purpose and wisdom, this woman and my grandma are geniuses.
This is so delicious! I added sliced garlic, a tiny bit of leftover ham, a 1 pound bag of frozen peas rather than the canned peas (It's what we had on hand) and 1 pound of mini pasta shapes. Wonderful recipe! It's snowing outside and this is very warm, tasty and comforting!!
@LolitaSupreme Really what is wrong with you? Just because you don't like something someone comments you can't pass by it and forget it. You have to speak vulgar and blaspheme God's name. You don't use God's name irreverently it is a sin.
I agree. This should totally be a show on the Food Network here in the States. If Clara doesn't want to do it herself (I could see where that could be tiring), have another person host with her recipes! Since everyone's economy is in the shitter now we could always hear new ways to live cheap.
I made this for my kids and they ate every bit of it! I also showed them this video, never too young to start learning to be gratefull for what you have. Thank You
Spices are everything when you are using only staple foods. Meat of any kind was a luxury back in those days...and in some ways, this was actually a healthier diet :)
Very inspiring Clara. Im happy to see all your history, all that you know during is time that people sometimes forget is all documented for us to remember, and to keep your dishes going in our everyday lives. Thank you..
clara, my sister and i have watched your videos all day. everything looks delicious. we are going to try them. thank you for shareing your wisdom. cathy and kleda

I love Clara! She reminds me of my Oma (German for grandmother, she lived 1900-2003). My mother was born in 1922 and told me the depression was very, very hard. Thanks to those who made these videos possible, I have enjoyed every one of them.

No shit she's old, no need for unnecessary comments. Just watch the video & enjoy.
I love how the pasta turned out :) looks really good & god bless you. You are a really great grandmother to have.

@veggievillan Fresh produce under a dollar per pound? Where do you live to get such awesome prices?? Where I live the cheapest produce is usually around $1.50 per pound, and that's usually boring Red Delicious apples.
bunnyshooz 8 months ago
@bunnyshooz ha! for real, I'm from Peru and yeah, you can get 10 huge bananas for 20 cents! (in u.s. dollars!) fresh products are the cheapest, processed ones are expensive.. I would tell you more but i'm not sure how heavy a pound is, we use Kg

I like how this is a one-pot recipe that is very simple and yummy. Anyone on a shoestring budget should watch Clara's videos.
sarahaudrey03 10 months ago
This is so delicious! I added sliced garlic, a tiny bit of leftover ham, a 1 pound bag of frozen peas rather than the canned peas (It's what we had on hand) and 1 pound of mini pasta shapes. Wonderful recipe! It's snowing outside and this is very warm, tasty and comforting!!

@LolitaSupreme Really what is wrong with you? Just because you don't like something someone comments you can't pass by it and forget it. You have to speak vulgar and blaspheme God's name. You don't use God's name irreverently it is a sin.
Skyheartstar777 10 months ago
@Skyheartstar777
Hahaha, oh wow. "You dont use God's name irreverently, it is a sin."
You religious freaks never cease to amuse me. What is so wrong with using an imaginary character's name in a slanderous context?
LolitaSupreme 10 months ago
great stuff, someone shud bring this onto tv, much better thn the crap we have right now in the UK, Jamie oliver can f.off, Clara all the way!
esuhco 10 months ago
@esuhco
I agree. This should totally be a show on the Food Network here in the States. If Clara doesn't want to do it herself (I could see where that could be tiring), have another person host with her recipes! Since everyone's economy is in the shitter now we could always hear new ways to live cheap.
sarahaudrey03 10 months ago
Please use the cutting board Clara! I'm scared you'll cut yourself just watching.
