But I've come to rely on SA and magazines like American Conservative as reasoned voices in their own right. And I am curious as to what people here think of Bernie Sanders, him being after all a self-declared democratic socialist.

I don't find it surprising to see men like Bernie Sanders and Russ Feingold going with this legislation. Bernies Sanders was elected as an independent giving him more freedom from partisanship allowing him to support legislation he believes in. Russ Feingold has always been a man of principle and is probably one of the best defenders of the constitution. Do not confuse bipartisan support for ONE small government issue as a realignment of the GOP. The support Paul is getting now can be summed up in two words: Political Expediency.

McCain's support for the first of the bailouts was just another reason why no one should've voted for him. If HR 1207 doesn't pass, There will be hell to pay. We really should have a revolution more often. The Patriot Act should've NEVER passed, and when it did, all of America should've rallied together and set things right. I tend to think of the principles behind HR1207 as being more American than strictly conservative. Over the past century we've been made to think that conservatism and liberalism are necessarily opposed to each other on every strata, likely because such a dichotomy would doom us to an endless, strength-sapping debate. But the truth is that that real conservatism and real liberalism have a lot of common ground, and transparency in government certainly is part of it. Real liberals can help too.
