  • Apart from the sound quality, that's pretty watchable! Certainly from the viewpoint of the early 70's.

  • Wow. I think the only video I've seen that's more lo-fi then this thing is the 20 line mechanical TV....

  • @vcrcollector When you want to take out the TED disc, why is the buzzing noise at the end?

  • @MultiTech89

TED is read by a diamond stylus, like a music record. As the groves are very fine (you can see light interference colours in the grove), the stylus has always to be very accurate and so to be sharp. The noise is made by a diamond grinding wheel which sharpens the stylus after each playback.

  • Aus welchem Material sind die Bildplatten ? Die verbiegt sich doch ganz komisch.

Which material are the records from ? This one twists so funny.

  • Btw, just love that sound as the pickup gets sharpened for the next disc... :^D

  • This thing kicks ass! Now THAT's a pioneering achievement, even if it flopped commercially. Blows any of that boring DVD crap away. Heck, even Columbine '73 beats any rubbish Hollywood's cranked out lately. I kinda like the fuzzy picture and distorted snap-crackle-'n'-pop sound. :^)

  • I've never heard of this format before, what does TED stand for? Is it in any way simillar to Laser Disc or the RCA CED format?

  • i've always been a fan of old audio/video formats, this is the first time i've actually seen one of these in action. very unique, but as he was demonstrating the functions and had the top open, etc, it was easy to see that it had too many moving parts and was a disaster! Still, very unique and would like to have a TED system of my own!

  • Whos idea was it to make the disk bend like that?

  • TED used the line-sequential TRI-PAL system for encoding the 2.5MHz bandwidth luma and .5MHz R-Y, B-Y chroma components. TRI-PAL was developed especially for the TED system and Teldec also created an NTSC variant. In 1978, Teldec proposed the Mini Disk system, a 4-inch, digital sound format that used the TED pressure-pickup and pulse concept. It was submitted to the Digital Audio Disc Committee as a competitor to JVC's AHD, Philips/Sony CD and Pioneer's PCM-LD for possible standardization.

  • This video is really interesting, I've always wanted to see a TeD system in action. I've only read about this system, thanks for posting this...!

  • I take back what i said, it must've be a marvel back then.

  • Very interesting, I didn't know about all these previous formats!

  • Interesting video, thanks for the addition.

With only 10 minutes of playback per disc and the highly complex electronics the TeD player will always have a warm place in my heart.
