Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan was first shown as the abc Sunday Night Movie in Febuary 1985. I remember because it had the iconic red, white, & blue stars opening & it was also the first big movie that I recorded off of my new VCR I got for Xmas of 84.
While I remember this very well... I also remember the voiceover saying, "The Sci Fi classic, this could be the best Trek of them all!" We had this version on tape. It should also be noted that the David Marcus anti-military rant and Saavik/Kirk elevator scene were both different (and better) in the ABC version as opposed to the theatric and dvd versions. The ceti alpha eel scenes were also altered for television to be less graphic.
I've got a recording of this particular airing with all of the original commercials I transferred from an old betamax tape. Unfortunately my copy doesn't have this intro. It comes in with the opening credits after the first commercial break.
I do have the star tunnel intro to the first airing on February 25, 1985 which included deleted scenes.
Man I remember this...my first glimpse at a great movie! ABC movie nights introduced me to Bond, Star Trek and a lot of other movies that had an impact on me.
Ernie Anderson was so amazing. You knew, even before he got Shatner's name, that he was going to do the "SHHHAT-ner". Ernie was the king of the exclamation point. He knew how to use them, and more importantly, how NOT to use them.
The problem with MANY of the Star Trek movies --- including JJ Abram's Star Trek is that they have been desperately trying to replicate the same "lightning in a bottle" that Wrath of Khan had and that's why the franchise has gotten thinner and thinner over the years.
@KiCreativeStudios While I definitely agree that the failing of the franchise had ST:2 replication as a problem, but I would also say that it wasn't necessarily a failure of JJ Abram's Star Trek. Abram's Trek was paced like a Star Wars film, not like Khan. Abram's Trek, While having a somewhat ridiculous story (Kirk from cadet to Captain in a day etc.), it did excel at entertaining non-Trek fans while infuriating Trekkers simultaneously.
God! ABC's movie intros were always ahead of their time, beginning with the star tunnel of the early 80's upwards to the intro used in the early 90's. Always memorble.
Nah, none of the networks did. They were too violent and were considered too trashy for the big 3, or even FOX. I do remember them airing in syndication, heavily edited of course. The ads for them scared me. I was 8 years old at the time.
oh my god I was real little when this was going on, wow nice memories
