Lets look at facts; Military and police tried the Doberman and Rottweiler at different times, then went back to Shepherd, same thing happened with Malinois.. all those forces are going back to GSD, why? Because German shepherd blends power, speed, agility, endurance, drive, bravery, loyalty, and smarts all in 1 dog! BUT, only get WORKING LINE!

Impressive Breeds? Impresive to me is a dog that can work. GSD should be #1! Police, K-9, protection, search and rescue, seeing-eye (for the blind) Military, drugs, plus hearding, etc... All the other breeds I seen besides the Rot, were nothing but Bull dog type breeds... What are their purpose? Besides fighting, and or protection..
This is a fairly good list, some of the pictures were terrible representations of the breed(GSD, Bullmastiff, Presa Canario) But most were good, I loved the dog that you chose for the Cane Corso, and when I saw that you had the APBT in here, I was expecting to see AmStaff pictures or those horrible "American Bully" ottoman shaped mutts, and I was very glad to be proven wrong. =)

Hands up for the German Shepherd. Not the show blood lione but the working blood line. More drive, more agression, a far more serious dog. The Shepherd, through the working bloodline are making a huge come back. check out any Shutzhund video on Youtube. mostn dog breeds can only wish they could be half as intelligent as a working Shepherd.

It's funny how ignorant people who have only looked at pictures think they know who the best dogs are. Have you even owned one of those dogs? I can tell you from experience that German shepherds and Rottweilers are bar none the most impressive races.
@BennyDACHO Actually I'd disagree (not completely), I've grown up with German Shepherds, had 3 Rottweilers and I'd have to say my Pitbull and Staffordshire terrier are by far the best dogs I've ever had, but I love all the dogs I've ever had, they all have their own unique personalities. But as for impressive the dogs you mentioned are only impressive for size (despite the doberman, I agree there), but for sheer strength a pitbull hands down.
It depends. A lot of people buy German Shepherds and Rottweilers from bad kennels. I've always bought German Shepherds and Rottweilers from top breeders. It makes a huge difference. Right now I have a German Shepherd that cost me 8k USD. I can guarantee you that a pitbull won't be able to take this dog down -- amazing reflexes and an amazing bite (has won competitions).

Also I consider a German Shepherd dog to be the best all arounder. It may not excel in any one category, but if you put those averages together (loyalty, reflexes, obedience, running speed, bite strength, endurance, cold / hot weather endurance etc.) you will end up with a dog that is at least top three in the world.

In my opinion jaw strength is not that important. Reflexes are more important, and few dog breeds have better agility and reflexes than a German Shepherd.
A quick bite to the throat at 269 psi is also deadly, and will in the end be decisive. There is a reason the military and police forces of several countries use German Shepherd and Belgian Shepherd dogs.
Not the strongest, but some of the fastest reflexes. If you've ever trained a dog to bite you will know this.
@BennyDACHO I have to agree with you there, also another main reason german shepherd are used are for their intelligence and keen sense of smell (not as much as a hounds but enough to be able to track a criminal through a housing complex)

I dont get how te GSD is number 10.. A dog that is the 3rd smartest dog out there, always makes it to the top of the guarding list (1 & 2 smartest dogs dont.) Will tear anything or anybody their handler (im talking well trained human.) tells too. Simply put on any list that compliments a dog in some way a GSD is always on it.. Besides, what kind of person doesn't think a dog that will come right away when called & sit next to their owner no matter what is going on around them, isnt impressive??
I like the list. I own 3 year old female Bullmastiff, a 2 year old male Rottie, & a 9mo male American Bulldog. All 3 a very impressive to watch and extremely sweet to play with. They are great guard dogs when need be, but they are also great with my nieces & nephews. They can kill any bad guy that might break in my house. BUT are really just big babies at heart - they let my kids climb on them and pull on them like stuffed animals. That is why I find these breads to be impressive.
I'm not impressed by any of them. If you want to impress anyone with the your dog, obidience train them and teach them hand signals or other non-verbal commands. Any breed can be impressive if trained right.
@herkull1 Amstaffs are the "show dog" of pit bulls. the apt is used more for fighting... a lot of people who fight pit bulls call pits with am staffs in their blood, a staff infection..

@BigTheNoodlez no its the fault of idiot pit owners who mistreat and abuse them for fighting. Which is sick and causes the poor breed to be thought of it as it is. I see a pit loose, I have no idea where it came from, how it was treated and how it was used..So my natural instinct is to be afriad and stay away from it. I call a local rescue who have pit rescuse contacts and let them deal with it.

It's funny how ignorant people who have only looked at pictures think they know who the best dogs are. Have you even owned one of those dogs? I can tell you from experience that German shepherds and Rottweilers are bar none the most impressive races.

@BennyDACHO Actually I'd disagree (not completely), I've grown up with German Shepherds, had 3 Rottweilers and I'd have to say my Pitbull and Staffordshire terrier are by far the best dogs I've ever had, but I love all the dogs I've ever had, they all have their own unique personalities. But as for impressive the dogs you mentioned are only impressive for size (despite the doberman, I agree there), but for sheer strength a pitbull hands down.

It depends. A lot of people buy German Shepherds and Rottweilers from bad kennels. I've always bought German Shepherds and Rottweilers from top breeders. It makes a huge difference. Right now I have a German Shepherd that cost me 8k USD. I can guarantee you that a pitbull won't be able to take this dog down -- amazing reflexes and an amazing bite (has won competitions).

@BennyDACHO Actually out of the 3 the GS has the weakest jaw strength Jennifer Lynn Ellis of Guelph University in Canada (published in the Journal of Anatomy in 2008 and revised in 2009) showed the bull mastiff to be the top dog bite wise with 552psi of pressure with Rottweilers at 328, Pitt-bulls at 316 and German shepherd with 269. @vombomin Pitt-bull downed the male when he tried to challenge the Pitt-bulls alpha male status (had to drop both dogs in our pool to get them separated as the only thing stopping the pitt-bull from tearing out the throat was the amount of hair the rottie had) but that said my male Rottweiler still broke the door to the place we kept his food one day when he decided he wanted a treat and no one gave him one (was quite funny tbh)

Also I consider a German Shepherd dog to be the best all arounder. It may not excel in any one category, but if you put those averages together (loyalty, reflexes, obedience, running speed, bite strength, endurance, cold / hot weather endurance etc.) you will end up with a dog that is at least top three in the world.

It's a small dog but it is an unrelenting dog. Seal Team Six allegedly used one of these dogs when they killed Bin Laden.
It may not look that dangerous when you are wearing protective gear, but it's definitely enough to subdue someone.

In my opinion jaw strength is not that important. Reflexes are more important, and few dog breeds have better agility and reflexes than a German Shepherd.
A quick bite to the throat at 269 psi is also deadly, and will in the end be decisive. There is a reason the military and police forces of several countries use German Shepherd and Belgian Shepherd dogs.
Not the strongest, but some of the fastest reflexes. If you've ever trained a dog to bite you will know this.

Yes, hounds and labs are very good at smelling drugs. I heard the German shepherd is better at detecting explosives, but I don't know if that's true.

Iv'e got a mongrel that is the smartest thing on four legs. Couldn't tell you what breed it is but God it's ugly. So ugly its gorgeous. It is the size of a maltese terrier. I dont get how te GSD is number 10.. A dog that is the 3rd smartest dog out there, always makes it to the top of the guarding list (1 & 2 smartest dogs dont.) Will tear anything or anybody their handler (im talking well trained human.) tells too. Simply put on any list that compliments a dog in some way a GSD is always on it.. Besides, what kind of person doesn't think a dog that will come right away when called & sit next to their owner no matter what is going on around them, isnt impressive??

I like the list. I own 3 year old female Bullmastiff, a 2 year old male Rottie, & a 9mo male American Bulldog. All 3 a very impressive to watch and extremely sweet to play with. They are great guard dogs when need be, but they are also great with my nieces & nephews. They can kill any bad guy that might break in my house. BUT are really just big babies at heart - they let my kids climb on them and pull on them like stuffed animals. That is why I find these breads to be impressive.

@robynsevo I went to a pet store one day and found the most adorable puppy. The store said she was a dalmatian cross so I took her. After having her for a couple of weeks I took her to the vet to find out that she was actually a pitbull terrier. I was a little apprehensive at first, but I already loved her. She has turned out to be the most amazing dog I've ever had! Dogs are a product of their upbringing! Don't be so closed minded! You're part of the reason us owners have such a hard time!

Hmmm, I love big dogs. I have two danes and an rish wolfhound, but I saw a dogo at a dog show once and recognized it in an instant. Lovely. Much more impressive than most of those other dogs. Pitty's impress me because I once saw one pull a semi <3 My husband doesn't like their faces ;n;
