...always kind and fair...saw the best in people :'(...worthy of admiration...unforgettable...taught people about life and character by his example...still cry when i remember. not the same. miss him very badly. still grieving. special man. (student)
Listening to all the stories and memories about Larry has helped us get to know him a bit, even though we never had the privilege of meeting him in person. Our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
I knew Dr. Fleisher during my 2 years at CSUN. He was not only extremely knowledgeable about his teachings, beliefs and causes, but he was the most humble and kind human being. He will always be remembered.
So sad to hear about Dr. Fleischser passing. I am hearing, an interpreter, and an alumna of CSUN. He was my first ASL instructor in 1976 when he himself was getting his PhD. I remember him as a wise, kind person who loved his family and students. What a loss, we will miss him so much! Sending love to his family, I remember how proud he was of his children. A very special person... no one will ever be able to take his place in so many areas. Love to you all who know him and are feeling sad
I am from Canada, Lawrence is my generation family, myself I am deafness. I am really shock for him, he passed away last Sunday. I can't belive him. He is good health. I wish visit to go California Lawrence's memorial funeral but I alway think of him, never forget. My family, please accept our condolence to Lawrence' family.
Thanks for the info Ella. My condolences to Larry's family. I was blessed enough to meet him in person once and I won't ever forget him. He is a gem and we were lucky to have him with us for a short time. BHammond-Nevada
Thanks for letting me know about Dr. Larry. As a Deaf Australian, I have never met him before but I remember that about 12 years ago, I appreciated his response to my enquires, regarding external courses on sign linguistics. Yes, he has personal integrity. This message is to join others, in sending my sympathies to those who knew Dr. Larry well.
My greatest condolences goes to those who are associated with this legendary advocate. He stood up to largest and meanest forms of ignorance and corruption within the deaf communities.
Larry Fleischer was my first and only adviser while I was in the Deaf Studies program at CSUN. I remember our first meeting, over 15 years ago in Monterey Hall(before the 94 earthquake this was the Deaf Studies bldg. We sat for about 30 minutes chatting in ASL.Afterwards he told me my interview was also my evaluation..determining my ASL skill level. Of course this was at the time of Mel and Sharon.the Deaf Studies dept. was like a tight knit family.CSUN mourns a great loss. What a man he was
Thanks Ella for sharing stories about this dedicated man who also was instrumental in getting our group - Beethoven's Nightmare known in LA by getting us the theater at CSUN twice. I just learned from a family member that he died of aurism not heart attack as told elsewhere. Truth be told that he stood by his belief and has always advocated for ASL to be in its rightful place. We'll be hearing a lot more about this fellow in coming days!
Thank you taking the time to let us know of his passing. I attended CSUN in the 80's. It was a special era and Dr Fleisher impressed me greatly. Not only for the wonderful inroads he paved in Deaf Culture, but also as one of worldly intelligence and openess, who left everyone he met feeling accepted and valued. This is sad news, but the memories will be cherished.
I share your sorrow and shock Ella. Larry was my ASL instructor at CSUN back in the mid 80's. He taught me the ASL story I used on my first vlog - "The Tortoise and The Hare." Every time I tell that story in public to the Deaf community I am reminded of him. Larry was exactly the man you described. A true leader and man of integrity. He will be missed.
This is a saddest moment for all of us especially Larry's family and friends. He will be always remembered for his crusade to pave the way to raise ASL to the bar. I have met him several times and have been awed by his share of thoughts and presentations as he is an intelligent proud Deaf being.
My deepest sympathy goes to his family and close friends.
Thanks for sharing! He was a great gentleman! He was great to be with! He was very supportive when I lived in California. He was a very caring gentleman. He will be sorely missed very much!
Thanks for sharing. He was a great man to be with! He was very supportive when I lived in California. He was a very caring gentleman. He will be sorely missed very much!
I am a student from Castro Valley who is down here at CSUN for Deaf Studies. Larry was my teacher for one of my classes and he was truly a remarkable man. My condolences to you for your loss. My prayers go to out to all those who were touched by his wealth of knowledge and experience.
It was so deeply sadden to watch your video. Truly heartbreaking! I wasn't forunately to know him. My condolences to you, his family and his friends. A loss for the Deaf community.
This is truly stunned - He was one of my role models. He helped me a lot. He invested a lot of things for Deaf community. He will be missed! I am just speechless right now and sad, may God bless him and his family.
Thanks Ella for posting this with all the feeling that just came pouring out. I agree those two terms principle and integrity so strongly characterized him. --Judy Kegl
Yes yes yes .... it is the truly heartbreaking news I heard today about Larry ... remembered I once took his Deaf Culture class many years ago at CSUN. It was a huge eye opening experience for me after taking that class. My heart goes out to his family during their such difficult time. I do understand as my father was gone unexpectedly at age 63. Thanks Ella for sharing.
Thanks for sharing with us about him. I dont know him personally after what you told us about him. Hope he will be more happier wherever his spiritual go however he will always be with us of our Deaf Community. Blessing him , we wont forget him. :) I am sorry you lost love one as a good friend. Rest in Peace.
I only met Larry once or twice, but I got the impression of him as a nice, smart, proud Deaf man. He was a true leader of our community, and he will be sorely missed. Thank you for sharing your memories of him from back before I could have ever known him.
Hi Ella - I did not know Dr. Lawrence Fleischer. I understand that he worked at the same department where Genie and Patrick work, correct? After I read Dr. Fleischer's brief biography, his background tells me how important he was to us in Deaf community. Now, I regretted that I decided not to attend ASLTA cuz I had to make the choice - to another trip plan. I am looking forward to seeing "continuous" tribute for Dr. Lawrence Fleischer. My condolences to his family and friends.
A very fitting tribute, Ella. Larry affected many of us in ways that I doubt we will ever fully realize. What a wonderful legacy, one that I think we all need to carry on in his absence.
Ella - thank u for making this vlog and for sharing your reflections. How sudden and shocking. My prayers and thoughts are with Dr. Fleischer's family during this hard time. I was very impressed to see how long and hard he had been advocating for Deaf ASL artistic expression at CSUN in addition to his other work.
I just learned of this news. So sorry to hear about it. Very interesting from what you said in ur vlog about him being the keynote presenter at opening of the conf in 1977, then the recent one at ASLTA, he was the keynote for the closing conf (endnote) and that's his career. Wow, very profound.
I am fortune to have a few opportunities to meet him at various settings. Although I do not know him personally, he was all what you described him!
My condolences to really and my thoughts are with all of you Americans that this man has been of great importance to you. Rest in peace and let his power and strength of presenting to you all deaf Americans to continue the struggle for deaf future.
This vlog touched my heart! Thank you for shared about how much special person of Dr. Lawrence Fleischer. I have to say that I'm AGREED with you! I'm still in shock!
Larry sounded a great guy. I've been hearing alot of stories about him which I'd been wanting to meet. Unfortunately, that won't happen. But I'm glad you're telling a brief story about him. I'm sorry about your loss. My sympathies go to his family as well as Deaf Community.
Ella, I just found out that Larry Fleischer passed away. Two friends emailed me and shared a brief, sad news with me. No idea. I am stunned. Larry was a good man. I used to do graphic design projects for him years ago. My heart goes out on his family. And they are in my prayers. Wow. When I got the sad news I had to check YouTube to see any info. And I found this vlog of yours. Thanks for making a vlog about Larry.
