$250 AUS??? That's fantastic! Great job I really loved it. I especially enjoyed the "You have to sign for that!" gag and how the ship comes crashing down in the end.
I think the only place for improvement would have been right in the middle when he's encountering the robots in the chamber & could have been a bit shorter.
Great job! I also agree though...maybe scale back on the dialogue? But heck, I didn't devote 1.5 years of my life into this so who am I to judge? Nice thanks for sharing : )

@faulty101 absolutely, that's why i tagged the vid with FLCL :) I'd definitely just been bingeing on anime and wanted to create a live action cartoon character. The yellow vespa and the soundtrack is a nod to that particular show.
@Groovywolfman Thank you very much. That's funny yet kinda cool about Sonic. I have no idea how it got in there, but I do love that game a lot, so maybe it was something subconscious with the colour palette :)
@BiologicalUnit2380 thanks, glad you thought so. Was always aiming for something that seemed 'slick'. It's hard to achieve with no money, but very happy it's played that way :)
@EZbakeROFLcakes this was basically my second time keying... and I wont be directing a film with a character with spiky white hair in front of a blue/green screen anytime soon! :P
@EZbakeROFLcakes yeah, that's how i'd do it these days. Do a primary key to get you a nice solid core. Then do another on a duped layer to get to those edges and then deal with the trouble spots (hair) with whatever works best. A luma matte will work nicely for white hair, or whatever combo of procedural mattes and roto to get you over the line.
i was trying to get as much as possible in one key. The rest was painstaking roto :)
@roshinishah Hey, glad you liked the film. I studied film at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia and finished up there at the end of 2004. Have been editing, compositing and making films ever since. Thanks again, hope you enjoy the upcoming projects!
EXCELLENT & AWESOME short. Just curious, & if you wouldn't mind sharing with us... how much did all VFX cost you? looking forward to more of your work.
@ADAMANTPictures - Hey really glad you liked it. It was a labor of love for a long time.
Your question is a little tricky. There was only ever about $250 spent on the film. I did all the compositing and a friend (who was an up and comer) did all the CG work, but it took a very long time. Was shot in 2005 and finished late 2007 while working on other projects. However.... the VFX were all free as a result. I know that's not too helpful though :)
@hapmoriarty - Thank You very much for your reply. I've been learning some basic VFX & motion graphics the past 8 mths. I understand where you're coming but can only imagine what you had to go thru. But if you were to add all the hours put into doing both the compositing & Cg work, what would that be?
a) I have a short I'm trying to do next mth which has something similar - an internal scene of an Alien ship. Whats your advise on creating sci-fi walls & interior hulls, corridors? Thanks. : )
@ADAMANTPictures I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply, been busy on a job. As for your question, I couldn't even begin to calculate the total hours, but we did it the hard way and if we'd been full time, probably would have taken perhaps 3-5 months with just one/two people.
As for sci-fi walls and interiors, I didn't model the CG in this short, but my advice would be creative with design, but sparse with intricate geo. Try use textures to get away with as much as possible
Easily could be a series. Smashing all way round but I especially appreciated the shot of Jack sliding on the ground after blowing up the ship. Simple but effective.
I'm extremely glad you enjoyed it Ashandmisty :) As for the modesty, i suppose its better than being a braggart, but thanks for that too! hehe Glad you also seemed to enjoy Bad Day
Wow, totally wasnt expecting that. Very enjoyable!

Very original. For some odd reason some of the scenes reminded me of "Sonic the Hedgehog". The concept was really neat as well.

@hapmoriarty LOL, i can imagine, how did you manage to do it, would it be the same techneques used for female long hair?

leiposuctie 1 year ago
@leiposuctie You've no idea how much I wanted to keep that Vespa after the shoot.
Jack's Vespa and goggles were a direct reference to Haruko. Always glad when someone gets it :) We even painted the Vespa yellow just for the shoot!
