The dust bowl is generally know to have been caused by bad farm management practices, principally plowing furrows miles long instead of round and with zero vegetation left for wind breaks or to hold the soil together, whether on plains or hills. Thus when the winds eventually blew most of the topsoil of the "dust bowl" ended up in the next two states.
