I don't care who won this match, Gonzo was wiping Roddick's ass cause not only was he being his usual self with his forehand, he was landing major backhands as well and he was injured .. fuck the umpire, thank's gonzalez for all those wonderfull momments in tennis for the past 12 years, the game will miss you and your destructive forehand for a long long time.
The call was 100% correct. Gonzalez let the ball go...1 entire second later, the call of out finally comes. Ie, the call clearly didn't affect Gonzalez AT ALL. The only way they could've replayed it is if Gonzalez left the ball as a direct result of the line umpire's call, which simply wasn't the case. He lost that point because he made the wrong decision to leave the ball. It doesn't matter what happened earlier in the match, & it doesn't matter that it was set point.
There are times in tennis when the referee is the one to decide the winner. This could have been one of my favorite matches of all time, but the last call killed it.
Both players were equality matched this game, gonzo with his forehands and roddick with his serves, Gonzo isnt very good at volleying and roddick cant return that good. Gonzo plays like a genius, after the 4th set he was annoyed at the 5th still, and because of that he couldnt predict as well and choose his shot making better, the fair thing to do was replay the point giving an entire set away just like that because of a miscall is the lines persons fault.
The point that gave Andy the 4th set, in my opinion, was fair because maybe it's just the slow sync but Gonzalez hesitated before the umpire called out. I feel so bad for Gonzalez at 8:15 b/c that's like .01 mm on the line. He lost his morale after that point.
@spamkingalpha He may have let it go, but he had a play on the ball regardless. Roddick pretty much sprints to his seat and thinks that earns him the set? The exact same situation occurred with Roddick and Kohlshrieber at the 08 AO and Roddick went ballistic at the umpire because he was standing literally a foot from the ball and the umpire gave the point to Kohlshrieber. I guess this is another area of tennis which is just too subjective...
@93RastafarianPikachu Yes but he let it go because he assumed it was out, before the call. The review showed that it was in, so it was his fault for not playing it. If he played through then the point would have been rightfully replayed. Regarding the Roddick/Kohl I agree with you that Roddick overreacted there, it was the same situation and also had the right outcome. But like you say it is very subjective, maybe then need line sensors that make a noise or something lol
@spamkingalpha Thing was in the 2nd set, andy served and it landed close to the line and gonzo hit it and challenged (it was out) but it wasnt accepted because he hit the ball ( back in play). Now in the 4th set gonzo is right next to the ball and from what he did in the 2nd set he didnt want to repeat it, so he left it,& like the commentator said he was right next to it. Replaying would have been fair, both worked hard to get 6 or 5 games and for a set to be given away like is just unfair
@PatisauR Doesn't matter what happened earlier. A-Rod won THIS point, fair & square. All this sympathy 4 Gonzo, but the alternative wud've been unfair on RODDICK. Imagine being in his situation- how would u feel having played so well @ end of set & genuinely won a point because of a) ur good shot & b) ur opponent's bad decision 2 leave the ball, & then have it replayed, on SET POINT? And it's not right to say the ump "gave away" the set; Roddick had 6 set points, how was the set "given" 2 him??

Lol, the call came about 4 years after Gonzo left it! Gonzo thought it was out, so if there was no call, he would've challnged, and lost.

Fernando was doing great, top of his game untill the last set. He just completely lost confidence in himself, got frustrated, and lost the game.
