@HailToJackDaniels " i dislike both Malmsteen and Azabegic for the same reason: searching for technical perfection"!!! What do you try to achieve when you practice something???!!!!
I want to say something to those who say: Oh he's so much perfect that i cannot feel anithing!; or: Oh i do not like his searching for perfection!. First: if you do not own a guitar go to a shop, buy one and try to execute this song as he does. If you play guitar i'm almost sure you cannot play this masterpiece, But in the case you can do all those things, go for a camera, record your self playing this and let's see how do you play it because you will see the crappy you seem compared to azabagic
This is impressive, but I had to notice that there are some things wrong with this performance. It seems as if every single note was played at the same volume and he didn't really separate the melody from everything else at all. It sounds a lot nicer when certain parts are played quieter then others. And also, the third part was honestly way too fast to even enjoy the music. It sure is impressive that he can play it like that but it seriously didn't sound good at all.
@cessationofwill89 i dislike both Malmsteen and Azabegic for the same reason: searching for technical perfection. Still, both are very good guitar teachers.
@6stringhawk no offense, but if one needs to play a piece better than someone to talk about it, their wouldn't be many comments here. I dislike the San Miguel beer, but I can't tell it because i'm not a brewer? I just say I don't like the way he plays it. I really prefer Bertha Roja's interpretation and David Russel's, that's all I say. Anyway, for the two first parts, I use Azabagic's version to practice, they are very pedagogical and that's why I watch this video every day! Have a nice day.
@HailToJackDaniels i didn't say that you have to be better, i just tried to make you see that your comment (Still, both are very good guitar teachers) doesn't make any sense, because as you said, not everyone has the same musical taste, and if he's only useful for teaching guitar.......... I absolutely disagree with you
@HailToJackDaniels That doesn't make sense. I prefer Shin-Ichi Fukuda over Azabagic, Russell and Rojas (all really great performances), but it doesn't mean they are only good for educational purposes.
Then again, listen to the first few notes of the second movement. Such wonderful interpretation silences me. You need to listen to the interpretation with your heart, not your head.
please dont start taking offense like everyone on all of these videos but i think hes going to fast to display all of the emotion this song has to offer.
@Redmilitiageneral please don't take offense but that is absolute rubbish. Slower doesn't mean more feeling. More Rubato doesn't necessarily mean more feeling.
@LutenistDeMari lol. i warned you to not be offende because this may be your favorite or whatever it may be, but you assumption is incorrect. i didnt mean that slower means more feeling, i mean at this pace, the player is unable to create slight nuances that allow him to display emotion. do you play?
@Redmilitiageneral Yes I do. You are simply not listening, or unable to get used to this tempo. I hear many slight nuances in this performance...example: Listen to the subtle diminuendo and rallentando as the theme begins at 0:50. And then the slight diminuendo at 1:00... then follows a crescendo as he moves down the neck - only to relax again at about 1:12, followed by a sudden crescendo at about 1:17 so that all the music from 1:17 to 1:30 is somewhat more serious in character, more urgent.
@Redmilitiageneral Also, its not a 'song'. What do you mean 'all the emotions'? how many are there in this 'song'? 10? 100? 150? Music is not absolutes - you cannot simply say: this is too fast to display all the emoitions. And you cannot judge the 'nuances' based on a youtube sound file - although I can hear plenty of nuance in this performance. Try to separate these two things: is it really an emotionless performance, or are you just not used to the faster tempo?
@LutenistDeMari grow up loser. you intentionally misinterpret what i say because your offended by my comment. get over it. and get off this guys sack however great a musician he may be, you need not attack people for an opinion. idiot.
first movement was too fast... more rubato... Barrios was a composer from the Romantic Era... other than that the other two movements are where they should be...
@ThousandRoseBurial hahaaa when do you think the 'romantic era' was.... Barrios was alive in the age of recording .... more of a 20th century thing don't you think?
@ThousandRoseBurial Barrios was still alive in the 1940's. But all this is ridiculous. The point is, You cannot tell a great artist like Azabagic that he is playing "too fast" and give the reason "because this is a romantic piece". Should all romantic pieces be slow? For me this tempo is excellent. The melody sings better at a quicker tempo. Its the same attitude that guitarists have with Villa Lobos prelude 1 "slower is more expressive" - rubbish.
@ThousandRoseBurial And my point is that the Melody IS being played slowly here, even if the overall 'tempo' is quick. Try singing the melody alone at Denis' tempo. That to me is very lento, but without being so slow that the melody becomes disconnected. You should listen to Barrios' own recordings - he often played the 'slow pieces' quite 'quick'. People today wrongly assume slower is more expressive, and rubato is more expressive.

You can even hear a different version of La catedral in the anime serie Hellsing. Composed by Ishii Yasushi. The second act is missing dough and replaced with some kind of Transylvania waltz which is supposed to bring out the feeling of The most powerfull and immortal vampire Alucard (Dracula if you switch the letters backwards) Still alive in London year 2002 I think, Ishii Yasushii's piece is also pretty amazing
I love the difference between comments left on a video of this sort and a video of a degenerate playing some sort of call of duty video game. The level of sophistication here is just omnipotent compared to useless videos "gamers" (as they call themselves) post.
@abdulios While I appreciate and understand what you mean, the whole reason I came to this video, and the reason I am attempting to learn this on piano is because of a video game. While I admit many video gamers don't have a sparkling reputation when it comes to leaving intelligent posts, I find it disheartening that people generalize, when there are gamers who are quite sophisticated and refined. Furthermore, video games can be a great way to introduce people to beautiful music by soundtracks.
@ThatWellDressedGuy I understand what you mean but how can one be introduced into a beautiful song such as this one through a video game such as call of duty? There are some video games out there in which reputable individuals do play; strategic games for instance, but the general stereotype for "gamers" is a lonely teenager playing on his Xbox talking disrespectfully to others who may have just started to play the game and are not too familiar with it. But I can see your point of view.
@abdulios I'll concede, the Call of Duy series does nothing for the introduction of such beautiful pieces into more mainstream gamers. Personally, the fourth installment of the Ace Combat series, an air combat simulator, contained some of the most moving and memorable pieces of music I have ever heard. Infact, La Catedral is the first song you hear in the game, during the prelude, and it always manages to stick in ones head. I wish more games had such wonderful qualities.
the 2nd and third movements are amazing tempos and wonderful playing all around!!!!!! I'd prefer he played the first slower though, it's a very dramatic movement.
A great interpretation, personally I think you emphasise teh staccato base line around 5:10 a little too heavily for my liking. your ending was pure genius though
Cannot refrain from commenting – this is totally amazing. It's a bit funny to see people criticize his performance – people who never played and will never play even close to this level.

Gospodan Azabagic plays this piece better than many other excellent musicians. He "gets it".

A great interpretation, personally I think you emphasise teh staccato base line around 5:10 a little too heavily for my liking. your ending was pure genius though

trop rapide domage , lento c'est beaucoup mieux pour ce prélude

oui, je pense que vous avez raison, mais ce n'est pas important si la musique est lentement ou rapide, un personal preferance n'est pas?

There are no words to describe this performance. It's Fantastic !!! It's powerful and passionate, yet flowing and graceful. It is transcendant.

Cannot refrain from commenting – this is totally amazing. It's a bit funny to see people criticize his performance – people who never played and will never play even close to this level.
