@kookoo275 As if the matter could be adjudicated by a metronome.
"Pretentious" has -or once had- a specific meaning; the streams of its etymology are in no clear way tributaries to the formless pool of all purpose pejorative it has become.
The word is now simply what is available on tap in any any artistic context, the first resort of those unable to produce any turn of phrase that requires more erudition or imagination than the use of a faucet.
Lady Gaga is so much better than this guy... And hey, isn't this the dude who sued Steely Dan over some song they never stole from him? Wow! This fruitcake should give up already! And what kind of piano playing is that? Sounds like sonic schizophrenia if you ask me...
@caranauba Really? I said "Poe" to myself right off the bat. The first sentence about lady Gaga is a spotlessly transparent dead giveaway, don't you think?
@ncsquirll I guess it comes own to one's musical sense, if your ear tells you something different from mine, I suppose we are at an impasse.
Still, to my ear it seems entirely obvious that the musical "sentence"" Jack was playing had not reached its final punctuation when Jarrett (as I see it) interrupted him, and it wasn't remotely musical.
Note (what appears to me) the impatient (and perhaps vaguely narcissistic) look of anticipation in Jarrett's facial expression and body language @ 4:45.
@polymath7 I think you're wrong about this, sorry to say. There is definitely a look of anticipation, but no impatience. He is simply waiting to hear the phrasing that will give him the inspiration to play something.
Yes, I understand the concept. But surely you aren't suggesting that it isn't possible for one musician to "interrupt" another in such an exchange, that Keith could have come in at any time and it would still sound "correct"?
I would strenuously assert the contrary; I would say that there is a certain "logic" and grammar to musical phrasing, and that Keith *clearly* cuts Jack off in mid-sentence, as it were.
The interplay of this trio is extraordinary.
