It has to be replaced in the time. Of course tintin in congo is definitely racist, but it was the first episode (in 1931) and it reflects the clichés from this colonialist time. Hergé later admitted it. Besides he was not really interested by knowing people he was talking about in the 3 first episodes. Then he started to read a lot before writing (tintin et le lotus bleu for instance where he talks about japanese invading china). In this sense Tintin must be read as a whole be4 critisizing

This edition was banned when it was published for fear of causing an outcry. Herge did this story to make fun of the Belgians at the time whilst telling the world how embarrassed he felt by their behaviour. This is an old story btw, check the history books for an exact date. Not sure if the Belgians are like that now. Apologies if this comment causes offence.

i remember on the comic The Blue Lotus Tintin's dog made a remark towards the Japanese antagonist and it went something like "Tintin are the Japanese good people?" so yeah i'm asian and that line kinda ticked me before but I still love the Tintin series. some people are just too sensitive nowadays

I just read the original monochromatic version of Tintin in the Congo and I found it very condescending toward the Congolese, especially the train scene.

It's interesting to note, though, that Hergé's next comic, Tintin in America, in its original version made frequent references to lynching, portraying the practice as violently irrational but common as breakfast. The American publishers later persuaded him to remove these references for subsequent publications.
