  • Who the fuck sits down at a concert like this...

  • I am a guitarist, and I can say that when johnny marr plays guitar, I fucking shut up because I don't know how the fuck he's producing that beautiful sound of his. I seriously don't even try, I should but I think it would be too much hard work. I can play along with bitches brew, and everything else, but whatever rockabilly thing marr does, I obviously don't know where to even start.

marr is and was seriously brilliant.

now let's cut all the shit and have a smiths reunion, yah?

  • He might be getting old, but he still got it! :)

  • 2 guitarrist of morrissey = Johnny Marr

  • boz boorer is mozz jhonny marr now but boz is no jhonny marr not close but still good

  • What is that screeching horrible guitar thing?!?!?!

    WHERE'S THE MUSIC???

  • 20 years later: same great voice, same terrible dancing. Morrissey, you're wonderful!

  • Sounds like a mashup of Are You Gonna Be My Girl and This Charming Man...

  • i very much doubt marr gives a toss either way. joke and royce might be shuffling around the outskirts of manchester trying to make a living out of their past but morrissey and marr have moved on, theres a thought...........

  • I wonder what Marr thinks of the band

  • Johnny Marr, where are you? :(

  • Moz owns this song. Nice.

  • Noel Gallagher on Johnny Marr "Nobody can play what he plays"

I completely agree.. It is nearly impossible to replicate Marr's brilliance..

  • wow, sounds as if Jet tried to cover This Charming man

  • "Couldn't. Shouldn't. Mustn't."

  • That wretched band (aside from Matt Walker) just raped that song. What a shame.

  • awful

  • povo no show do morrissey sentado... aff

  • I actually like this version as good as the original, it sounds more rockish and fits i better with his latest album.

  • where is the glorious guitar? it is not the same without Marrs on guitars.

  • 1:37 He didn't scream before the "country boy" part...:T I miss that "Ah!"

  • VIVA MOZ!!

  • He still has such a beautiful sexy voice!

  • People complaining about the guitar, he's not in The Smiths anymore, he's doing what he wants with the song. If he just replicated the original, the (same I don't doubt) people would just be complaining that he's just copying The Smiths style. I love Morrissey, I love The Smiths, and I love this version! High energy, He played it when I saw him and it was brill! Love the half time drums on the chorus. Greeeat! :D

  • @TheModCon AGREED 100% wow someone who's actually NOT out of their mind on here :) But seriously I couldn't agree with you more, the whole point of covering a song whether it be or not be a song from your former band is to do something different with it i.e. make it your own. Unless of course you're in a tribute/cover band. I think the band is more than capable of cloning the the original version if that was the intent. Whether or not one likes this version, well that's irrelevant.

  • @TheModCon Cont.. What I find laughable and even somewhat disturbing is that anyone would be so appalled or think that it's in some way blasphemous that Moz would even consider changing it up in any way. Lighten up people it's not that deep.. :) Take care..

  • Fuck me!, It sounds like instead of Johnny Marr, someone from Metallica has been drafted in. Not a good sound

  • The guitars didn't butcher it, but more was actually missing. I did not hear the bass player either play or cut through with the lines that gave the original recording much of its character.

  • @309rp Jesse Tobias is flat out terrible and Solomon walker isn't good enough on bass to play the Smiths stuff (and early Moz stuff as well).

  • I dont like guitar too

  • Moz gets sexier with age - I LOVE him X

  • Morrisey NEEDS a better guitarist

    GRANDE MAESTROOO!

  • Morrissey is on top form here - as usual. But my goodness, the absent talent of Johnny Marr is gaping here.

  • is new, is simple. i like it.

  • sounds like green day covering smiths

  • WOW! How sad! That guitar made the song sound like shit :/ Wheres Marr's? :(

  • Yeah i am not liking the guitar playing.. Moz sounds great though..

  • I would of love to of seen this, will he play this at Glasto, I can only hope!

  • His voice is very beautiful, right tune, but that guitar makes Marr missable. Distortion and full chords it's not the way to play it.

  • charming charming charming man, god I lurve ya!!

  • Smother your hands in chicken grease then shake hands with Morrissey. LOL

  • @Metallideth1993 diaf.

  • i would feel awkward if i was performing for this crowd ._. ......

  • johnny marr is massively missed here!

  • it sounds just like the Death cab for cutie cover, but with the ¨Mozz¨ voice... back = shit, morrissey = fucking epic.

  • What's with the chorus-breakdown? Sounds like he's backed by sum41.

  • Morrissey wants to play that song, then he should get a guitarist who can play the riff that made the song iconic.....would make sense......

  • Only Marr can play the riff.

  • wow, amazing version!

  • no no noooo...... the band got it totally wrong

  • @marijhd mad?

  • @djscreaming guitar too heavy imo... sounds nothing like marr's playing

  • @marijhd Exactly what I was going to say. Couldn't even hear the guitar riff that makes the song so good.

  • @CaptainCosmic if Moz had actually wanted the riff to be heard, you can bet your life it would have been.

  • @marijhd because its not Marr whos playing it

  • @marijhd No, that's how Morrissey re-arranged it like an idiot.

  • Senti falta do gritinho... "ah!"

  • yeah he is the best my idol leyend master of masters wow it blows me out of the water

  • does the instrumentation in this version remind anyone else of the death cab cover?

  • where the hell is the riff. where is it.

  • Being forced to sit at a gig must be horrible

  • god that guitar !

    sounds a wee bit wrong

  • doesnt sound right without johnny marr

  • where the fuck is the jangle!?

  • boring crowd, typical bbc.

  • i like this version...and the original as well it's his song man,and period..

  • his voice hasn't really aged

  • If he turned up, sat on a bar stool and read the lyrics out I'd still pay to see him!

He's the most charasmatic person in music and for the record, I love this version, I like it with a bit more of a meaty sound, it's not as instantly catchy as the original but let's face it, the original is a timeless classic.

  • I don't think meaty is the right word XP

  • Comment removed

  • Morrissey is GOD! Right?!

It's his song and he can do what the f**k he wants with it.

  • @mozroz ...Finally somebody gets it.

  • @mozroz

    hmm. good point.

  • the biggest star still shines

  • too rude, boys,,, original smiths forever

  • Enjoyed this I suppose I should REALLY complain about the lack of Marr but to be honest I quite enjoy the energy and don't like the same old' jazz again and again without change so...

    GREAT track Moz and co.

  • genius. End of. Viv le Moz!

  • If people who do covers on youtube can play the original part im sure a professional guitarist can. Morrrissey is actually copying the version of this charming man that "death cab for cuties" made with power chords. Perhaps he wanted a change from the old image.

  • can't his guitar player handle johnny marr's guitar part? the smiths were much more sophisticated than this

  • Awesome energy in this version

  • hahahah his version is even better than that death cab bads

  • me gustaba más la versión de The Smiths :(

  • death cab for cutie version?!?

  • Hey morrisey call meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee..I play this song better than this shit guitar player......

  • where's the INTRO?! .___."

  • the most horrible thing on earth: "have to sit at a Morrissey concert"!!!!

  • @strellnikow what that fuck are you looking this then, hey strellnikow kill yourself it would be the most beautiful thing on earth, fuck off......

  • @cuajinay , WTF, you stupid guy!! I didn't mean the concert, I just meant, to SIT on concert of Morrissey is horrible, not to join one! You should better learn to read the meaning of sentences, instead of wishing me death. I'm one of the biggest MOZ Fans!

  • @strellnikow sorry i did not understand what you meant.please forgive me be a charming man..peace

  • @cuajinay It's ok, I will forgive you...and also you should be a charming man...peace

  • @strellnikow I know, how can they just sit there, i'd have been up on stage much earlier.

  • @strellnikow Why is that?

  • @strellnikow Except they stand up and dance.

  • @strellnikow No, the most horrible thing on earth is "This Charming Man" rapped and destroyed by this fucking band.

  • @LottaRadiohead You mean the guitar-player doesn't make his job? Well, I saw Morrissey in Vienna 2009 and must say, it was great, they also started with "this charming man"! But hey, I am no guitar specialist, so maybe I am not able to hear anything he plays wrong... greetings from Austria, and be a charming girl ;-)

  • @strellnikow lol u dont need to be a "guitar specialist" to hear he's raping the song.....

  • @strellnikow i hate that kind of snob people in the concerts, very old... that know just one or two songs...

  • I think Morrissey does the arrangements in such a way to separate them from Marr's way of doing the songs, and while it's not awful, This Charming Man was not meant to be played like a pop-punk song.

  • I gotta say I love this version...it was the opener last time I saw him and it kicked the show off in really cool manner...but I get what ya mean...Marr is one of the greatest guitarists E V E R!

  • so basically morrissey should never do a smiths song?FUCK OFF ,away and listen to your new CRIBS long playerLOL.

  • Off to see Moz at the weekend....love him to bits but the fact remains a certain Mr Marr wrote banging tunes that fitted hand in glove with his lyrics....no other musician came close apart from a certain Mr Reilly !

  • I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Johnny Marr and Vini Reilly are currently the two best Mancunian guitarists living.

I guess it helps that they're both creative geniuses too.

  • morrisey ..your guitarrist is destroying this song..

  • The band looks like a garage band and plays like a garage band.....

  • great video/performance

as always youtube comments are always awful, i like how people try too hard to go against the grain yet conclusively they all think the same, so lame

yeah ima rapper, you got a problem with that?

  • Oh no, why did they feel the need to make it more rocky? Loses all its charm and appeal.

  • oh my god... they fucked it up miserably. this is depressing.

  • Damn those Marr's other projects. They're shit. (well, not really, but still.) Get back together with mozzer :D

  • What happened to the sweeping melodies I loved? That made this song in my eyes.

  • It's a shame it's so different

    But he still sounds flawless

It's just the music is the problem

  • sitting down right infront of morrissey ? couldnt do it old bean.

i'd be throwing my arms around him xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • there are so many old ladies!

  • he's old. hahahah if there were young girls someone would call the cops hahaha

  • hey! im 14 and like Morrissey

  • Where's the music to this charmingman!

  • I don't care about the jaded audience, I'm just glad he is still here to perform it.

  • WTF? This a really bad version of "This Charming Man" meets "Lust for Life!"

  • classic

  • why do people worry about shite, listen 2 the man and enjoy,4 fuck sake. at least hes still alive lol

  • Fuck this arrangement.

  • What a sedate audience.

    Lacking atmosphere, methinks.

nevertheless, Moz is still muy magnifico!

  • I actually like this version, dont ask me why...probably beacause Morrissey shows he´s not afraid to upset all the indie-puritans among his fans...

  • Jesus. The entirety of Marr's amazing guitar work has been totally eviscerated. It's so flagrant that it almost seems like an intentional slap in the face. But if he's trying to prove a point, it's not in his favour.

  • I would've jumped up on stage, hugging him... look, no stupid securityguys!

  • WHY ARE THEY SAT DOWN!!! i'd be leaping around like some loon who had won the lottery!!

  • thats the same ??? I ask myself...I have this in CD and everytime I play it me and my friends have it full blast jumping around.......

  • I think they had to, without choice. It is a program for BBC, not a concert, if that makes sense.

  • If it wasn't so funny, it would almost be depressing to see a bunch of middle aged people doing what seems to be some kind of half hearted sitting down dance.

  • youre right, the public is pathetic

  • Sitting down and clapping! You're right, that is pathetic!

  • The voice has aged slightly but I think that the new version is indeed fun! It would have been silly to play the Smiths' guitar line, I think.

  • This new version is being bashed way too much. Yeah, the original is legendary, but this new version is fun and bouncy. I listened to This Charming Man way too much back when I first heard it. This new one makes it feel fresh again. :-)

  • that crowd is fucking DEAD

  • Anything Morrissey does is Amazing..... Get it right people.

  • I think it's not as good, but Morrissey would never play the original version because it was so closely associated with Johnny Marr's playing.

Perhaps he's just having a sly dig at Marr...

  • this song without the riff bothers me.

  • Agreed, it sounds wrong with just distorted chords.

  • great video; thanks for sharing. good to see morrissey still has it after all these years!

  • Comment removed

  • Good to see him push his voice even this high anymore, right on .

  • Fifty years old and still sounds terrific.

  • its like this because he cant sing as high anymore. its still good

  • What does Moz mean when he says the couldn't, shouldn't and musn't thing??

  • you must know that it doesn't have to mean anything...or maybe it means everything?

  • He's actually quite straight on that one. 'You can go and buy my new album, however there are some songs for those who couldn't shouldn't and musn't'... He knows...

  • what the fuck is the band playing??

    morrissey could still sing

  • this is not the best version of this charming man but it is perfectly arranged. all you hypocrites should know that mozza's band is quite good, amazing musicians.and don't forget the fact that boorer and tobias have been part of his crew for a long time.

    show some respect.

  • YOU SEE? MY BABY STILL LOVE THE HUGS!!! you can see he wants them! it is the damn fucking security at some venues!

  • agreed - the smiths are the greatest thing that happened to my cd collection, and morrissey has really made an impression on me, but this version is shitm the band is shit and the whole song is just gay! This is not good

  • his band is sooooo bad

  • You're a fucking idiot. His band is awesome. Don't come here and talk shit if you've got nothing reasonable to say.

  • Do you know anything about his band?

  • read on wikipedia

  • Fair play he's still got it.

  • I do like this version. It doesn't try to compete with the original versions and i think it's where Mozza is right now, energized and vital. I'd slag off the audience but that would be sour grapes because i couldn't get a ticket.

  • WTF IS THIS SITTING DOWN AT A FKN MORRISSEY CONCERT? I dont care for this version of This Charming man, but I guess im spoiled since Iv'e seen The Smiths 5 times. And every damn Morrissey Concert since DAY ONE well concerts in California lol

  • are you fucking serious you have seen the smith 5 times? oh my god, i would sell my grandma just to have seen them live! i was like 4!

  • I hate that audience for some reason.

  • AUDIENCE= MUMMIES

  • We thought he never would.......and then he did! Oh glory!

  • i really do hope everyone here knows he hasn't played this song in 24 years. even the smiths didn't play it after 85. you are all watching history. and if he plays it this tour and you see it consider yourself very VERY privileged, cause the only other people to see this song live were people who saw the smiths in 83-85.

  • Yes, but it is a HORRIBLE version. Just because an artist digs into his archive and plays a bastardized version doesn't mean we have to like it or feel privileged to hear it. Morrissey is a great artist and performer but not beyond fallibility or criticism. This version is just...terribly wrong. I agree with the other commenter that he changed the style to fit his current sound, but if the original song doesn't fit into his current sound, leave it be.

  • Whats up with the people in the audience?...stand up! its Morrissey dammit!

  • I could never stay in seat while Mozz on stage....are they nuts?!

    Brilliant performance.!!!!!!!!

  • i think the newer riff is because only marr can play the original the best. as noel gallagher said, marr is a crazy cunt when it comes to some of the things he can do with a guitar.

  • Moz and Marr...GODZ....and Tobias...Feeling the pangz...Oh dear the riffs that killed Elvis...

  • What does that mean, "the riffs that killed Elvis"? I'm not trying to be cute, Im seriously curious.
