Two men man the Swan station and input the button. Kelvin has a failsafe key, but is afraid to use it. Prior to the building of the Swan, a hydrogen bomb is used to contain the electromagnatism. Dharma folks were there, and know this. Put the pieces together: why didn't Kelvin turn the key? Why make them input the code?
Answer: They had two men at the Swan because that is the protocol for all nukes, not to mention that the possibility loomed that "not pushing the button" could cause an electromagnetic meltdown killing everyone. Kelvin told Desmond what the key was for (off screen), which is why he knew it would take an atom bomb to get through the blast doors, "trust me", he said. And Desmond was JUST AS AFRAID to turn the key as Kelvin was because neither knew "what would happen" when the nuke was detonated.
What makes this scenario so interesting is that it parallels the entire situation of the overall myth--Desmond is the protector who took over from someone previously, was in some way tricked, cannot leave, works to save humanity, and keeps his secrets. Jacob took over from someone previously, felt his choice was forced upon him (tricked), cannot leave his position as protector until he has a replacement, works to save humanity (containing his brother), and keeps his secrets toward that end.

If you wanted "Lost" to give you answers that no one can give about things humans cannot know, you expected too much of a tv show. They could have slapped silly, nonmythological answers onto the smoke monster (nanites), but that would have been a cheat. There are no nanites, and even if there were, it doesn't emotionally connect with anything. "Lost" is a grand myth in the Joseph Campbell sense, not just another tv show.

Very, very well done. It didn't seem over the top or bombastic at all. It felt very ... real. And very calm in its chilling reality. This has me absolutely stoked for the final season. And I loved the music in this -- it complimented the images very well and I really loved the ending. Very good job, mate.

i think that the person with Jacob on the beach turned into the "Smoke Monster" somehow. His loophole was to impersonate Locke so he could convince Ben. Remember when Locke was talking to Walt about backgammon? When he said one piece is light, one dark? Very, very well done. It didn't seem over the top or bombastic at all. It felt very ... real. And very calm in its chilling reality. This has me absolutely stoked for the final season. And I loved the music in this -- it complimented the images very well and I really loved the ending. Very good job, mate.

i think that the person with Jacob on the beach turned into the "Smoke Monster" somehow. His loophole was to impersonate Locke so he could convince Ben. Remember when Locke was talking to Walt about backgammon? When he said one piece is light, one dark? I think that the monster is the dark of the island and Jacob is the light who is opposing it....Anyone agree?

i think the smoke is decieving them somehow. i think because is season 1 it showed shannon dead but she wasn't really. i think all of season 6 is going to be whoever is left vs the black smoke and whatever the black smoke throws at them. as for the bomb it is probably just going to send them back to the day they crashed or the day it was when ben turned the wheel down at the orchid. i think eventually everyone will be dead with no happy ending. charlie is not dead
