He performed this song on Saturday Night Live in 1977 when Eric Idle was hosting, and also played "Cheese and Onions" as Ron Nasty on that episode.

When was this recorded? Was it before the Rutles 1996 version was released on their archeology album?

Neil wrote Shangri-La before Archaeology. He 'Rutleised' several of his solo songs for the album. This performance is from the 80s.
