Actually, if you think about it, the Psychic told them it feeds on negative energy, and the evens were always worse after they had a big fight (creating negative energy). Also, he was told not to anger it or try to communicate, and he just ignored that and kept taunting it and pissing it off. the 2nd movie actually answers alot of questions.

This one.
