CGI isn't as bad as CSO. CGI is just used to create aliens (not very well) and planets/space (very well). CSO was used sometimes to replace entire sets and never convincingly
well, it might not be too complex, the Day of the Daleks has a special edition with more daleks added and new dalek voices and new special effects. If theyre doing that for that story then theres high hope they might do it for invasion of the dinosaurs.
It's one of my very favorite stories in all of Doctor Who. I never understood the criticism - of course it's got lame special effects, it's Doctor Who!
@kevinwparker I think Doctor Who had great effects for it's time. I watched an episode of Logan's Run the other day, now that had the advantage of a bigger budget and a few more years worth of more technology and looked atrocious. Heck even the movie of Logan's Run looked bad and that won an Oscar for visual FX. Doctor Who holds it's head up high against it bigger brasher contemporaries 95% of the time.
One Static & Plastercine. And the other too smooth & as shiney as Vader's Helmet!
At least they tried & gave it a go. Not like the new series where they just bottle it & use CGI. It's boring to look at.
Everyone needs to take a lesson from the AVGN. I quote - "There were lots of Great Movies in the 80's, before GCI came & took a shit over everything!"
There was NO CGI in 'Aliens'. Just Pure Creativety. Same with Dr Who Classic Series. Creative.
Well, I tend to agree. It was an experiment, lifting a JP steg and dropping it into Dr Who, for the reasons stated in the info. If IOTD got a DVD revamp with alt FX, and it's a big if, then I'd rather they tried to emulate the 1970s style with rod puppet physical FX. CGI would look totally wrong.
Agreed, the advent of CGI has ruined script writing in fantasy films, and by extension on TV. I'm no more a fan than you. I go further - I think the FX in Alien are miles better than those in Aliens.
Aliens is the second film right? I always get these films mixed up! Alien is ist one. Right. Yeh, Alien, was just a man in a suit with very clever shots. Aliens had no CGI, it was 6 suits & Blans from the Guns. The Alien Queen was hydrolics. The Space craft was a Model & the ACP People Carrier was made by CAT. No CGI!
Now it's "Hey, we got a new affects software, lets create some stuff & Rap a Story around it." I think the last decent film I saw was Pan's Labyrinth! Curse CGI. No Imagination.
@harnois75 I agree about CGI. I am a tokusatsu fan,and it really gets on my nerves when people criticise the use of suitmation[people in suits]. As if there was anything wrong with that.
Film makers WILL realise eventualy that CGI is over used & a pathetic way of conning people of their money. It's the easiest way of destroying magic. It happened with Star Wars, & it's happened to Dr Who. They very rarely work like the Next Gen did.
Some have already realised. Like the makers of Dog Soldiers - NO CGI. They went out of their way to make the Suits.
But I'm afraid the damage has been done. 60% of Classic Who fans don't bother to watch the new series anymore. We've seen enough. ;-(
Dog Soldiers had a little CG but only for very minor things (like blood) and it wasn't just the CGI that ruined Star Wars it was the crappy acting and bad writing that did that. but you could argue that the acting was bad because most of the film was shot in front of green screen. But saying you won't watch who because of over used CGI is a bit like saying you won't watch because Matt Smith is now the Doctor not DT. The characters make the story and RTD has left so it's all up hill now
It isn't just the CGI that forces me to abstain to watch the new series. Everything is wrong with it. I can't think of one thing that makes it as good as the classics series.
It's the same for a large percent of Classic Whovians.
The dinosaurs with the exception of T-Rex were actually quite passable in this story. The T-Rex was of course quite awful, they should have just used something else for all its scenes.
Good work! if only they would update the Dinosaurs effects, I would pay money for that. I love classic doctor who and would love to own some of the classic stories on DVD with updated effects.
This was one of the best Jon Pertwee stories in Doctor Who.. Howabout this for an idea..RTD?? what if the time shifting of the dinosaurs into london in 1974 caused a time rift causing dinsaurs in 2014 and the present Doctor DT had to try and close it.. by going back in time to 1974 and closing the loop you could get Sean to play his dad playing the Doctor then..
I wondered if maybe you should contact the restoration team, this really is great stuff, maybe the walking with dinosaurs people would let them use their models, if thats possible, you never know.
I tried to do something similar, stealing a T rex out of "Prehistoric Park" but the frame-by-frame cutting out of the dinosaurs did not go well, so I abandoned it.
So I have great respect for your slick work here, well done.
Yes, steg is from JP2, mirrored and colour adjusted. There are about 30 frames cut out, which is long winded, doubling up by blending between frames created a bit more time. I've started a T-Rex bit but the teeth are a right bugger to cut around. I'll get there eventually but I want to create something a little longer. I'm also looking for an apatosaurus for the start of the scene, which will probably mean looking at King Kong or one of the cgi TV series. Not sure how long it will take.
See above. I think it's highly unlikely that IOTD will get the full CGI treatment, but I'm sure something will be added for the DVD. Probably alternate model dino shots, more in keeping with the FX of the time and up to the standard of the Drashigs hopefully. When you look into the episodes there is a lot of rotoscoping involved in any new work, it might even be easier to build new model backdrop sets for some scenes rather than paint out the existing dinosaurs.

@harnois75 I agree. For it's time, and taking into account the small budget they had to work with, Doctor who delivered pretty good special effects.

ah, yes, invasion of the dinosaurs. The only episode of Doctor Who that actually NEEDS CGI.

There was no CGI because the technology was not there yet. Trust me, it would have been used just as much as it is now if they had it then.

Fair enough, but one of the dinos is actually walking. I guess it shows how pointless an expensive dino makeover would be though.

The timings a little off on the Doctor's reaction, but otherwise this looks quite good and is a nice improvement over the original.
