So fast, accurate, seemingly effortless. No wonder he doesn't break a sweat getting off the stage after a full setlist of this stuff. I'm practically dead 2 minutes into attempting to play most origin. haha
does he have 3 hihats? one left, one right, and what is that cymbal in the middle between his toms? looks like a crash with another splash on top and sounds kind of like a hihat
This guy has superpowers! Did you notice the hair in the air? He's like a super saiyan when playing drums! He can even play with one hand and sound like he has one million arms! And all with little effort!
No one can have that much speed in the feet its impossible hahaha he probably use those double stick pedal .. dont know how you call them lol Its seriously impossible to be that fast with that much power ... if im wrong ... then this guy is on cocaine xD
as much as i love john and truly believe that he's one of the best extreme technical drummers in the world today, i really wish he would ditch the tiny little clicky bass drum sound and go for something huge and punishing that would do his technique justice.
This guy's so incredibly talented but I hate his style of drumming. All he does is fucking blast beats. Sure his feet and hands are like pistons but come on, show some feel.
@theshartmaster He does double strokes not heel toe, RRLLRRLLRRLLRRLL all heel up. So the first stroke he pushes the pedal down and hits the drum then controls the rebound for the second stroke, then does the same thing on the other foot, so on and so on....Acousticly the second stroke is barely audible, you can hear it clearly here because he is using triggers.
@velas1985 well he's touring, so might not be using his own kit, and when you're only going to be using triggers, it doesn't matter too much. If you can play well enough with a double pedal (over two singles) and the sound is going to be identical, why not?
@ThexteraDrummer Nope, just regular Axis longboards. I can only think of one drummer that actually uses a quad pedal. In terms of John's actual technique it's singles up to 220 and then past that he switches to heel toe double strokes.
I hate people that say" oh, but there's triggers"... obviously you don't know about speed drumming. At tempos that fast an untriggered kick drum, well, all the notes would sound like they're running together. If anything, triggering just makes it easier to detect off tempo notes.... ehh, who cares if i make sense, METAL DRUMMING!!!
@MASSRCOR No, you do make sense. If his drums wouldn't be triggered it would be extremely hard to distinguish the notes and it would sound really noisy just because he is drumming so fast. Those assholes who think using triggers is cheating obviously don't know shit about drumming and extreme metal in general. Cheers dude.
@hyde2042 It is a Gorguts one, the top says "gorguts" then "XX" below it for 20 years since they started. They are the new shirts since they got back together. I know because I have one from MDF!
@psychoticcaterpillar To give you a slightly more useful answer.....the down stroke with the knee generates the first stroke, he then flicks his toe down to generate a second stroke for each motion of the leg. hence double strokes...RRLLRRLLRRLL etc. At speeds that make metalheads flinch and mere mortals dive for cover.
Thats why his legs appear to be doing the same tempos throughout but the speed doubles and halves at will.
Does he have some weird trigger on the bass drum? Some times it looks like he's going one speed but it sounds like he's going twice as fast. OR is that some crazy technique where's he's hitting the bass drum twice when it looks like once (and I'm not being a smart ass)? Someone please clue me in.
ShiPshapeD00d are you serious? Doubles on the hands and feet, triplet accent patterns, variations in blasts. This is creative metal at its best. If you think Luke Holland is better than John; it's likely you think Matt Greiner and Adam Gray are the greatest drummers ever and have no respect for real talent like Derek Roddy, Gavin Harrison, Vinnie Colaiuta, Bobby Jarzombeck etc etc. If you're going to tell people to look up a drummer on this site you should be telling people about Travis Orbin,
If you don't like origin go listen to something else, use your brain if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all, either say something nice or go smoke a Jeffery and fuck off
I like how at 1:30 he is able to blast really with his right hand and double on his feet while comfortably and smoothly taking care of an itch on his face...
What's up with all this bullshit about John not being talented, this guy is one of the best drummers in music these days, if you think he's not talented because he only plays fast, try to play as fast as him for about the lenght of a whole gig, like 1 hour. Jesus christ you guys are ignorant
man ShiPshapeD00d you have no idea wtf you are talking about
there is like a cult following of you tards on here saying oh man i didn't see any talent here, fast does not make you a good drummer WTF kind of shit is that
Is it the camera angle or does this guy have a very compact kit, cuz even though he got a LOT of stuff, his kit looks kind of small! It's like a baby deathmetal kit!
@ShiPshapeD00d when you're provoking people, make it a little less obvious ;) no one will ever take you seriously if you'll call drummer as creative, fast and tight as John a joke, especially if you throw in Luke Hollan (who's cool, but average) for comparison. i mean, come on ;)
@gxcpompon I dont see alot of talent here, and I too am a drummer. Hes just fast, speed doesnt equal talent. Then again, most metal like Origin is boring, so Im just gonna go back to listening to good music :)
@ShiPshapeD00d 1) there is much more to just playing fast here, notice his amazing heel toe, how his cymbal hand is more or less entirely independent from the rest of the blast (and thus used for dynamic effect). Granted, this is not John's best playing, I'd encourage you to look up the video of him rehearsing with Gorguts.
@TheHopelessDrummer If you listen really closely to the studio version you can hear him doing those short little tom fills, if that's what you were referring to. :]
@Deadlyfreak06 For me it's not only the insane double strokes on the bass drums but his hands. The whole section from 2:06 to 3:00 just blows my mind. Hyper double strokes in the feet and a jazzy feel on top. Art.
