I worked the nights 16 on 32 off the POL tank farm may 68 to Jan 69 then went PCS to Ubon unti May 69. With 32 hours off I made lots of overnight trips to Bkk and Pattaya and many nights in kilosip. Ubon was much nicer than Kilosip for sure. I went back in 2005 got to visit the tank farm with my hometown friend that was staioned at UT with me. Had a blast with Utapao Alumni Assoc. a yahho group.
Stationedf at Ellsworth in South Dakota the 28th FMS, Aircraft Strcl. repair, then TDY to Gaum, then 18 months to U-tapao in 67 and 68 ,something that one nevers forgets, the good, bad,and the really bad
I was stationed there -8/68-8/69, OMS flightline tanker line worked in the METRO van what memories-- feeding the python live chickens at the snack stand
@TheRichram OMG, I was there in 71-72. I remember the python - he was still there. Bob Hope came while I was there, but I had to work and didn't see him. I remember the barracks, our Thai maid service, the USO club, the bowling alley, and the 'entertainment' at the NCO club. And of course trips off base. We worked 12-hour shifts, 4 on and 2 off. I hadn't thought about any of this in years.
To someone who had an Army friend in Utapao Base who came from California and his nick name is Bob . He is my American Dad . He knew a Thai woman ‘s name RENOO. If he is alive , he will be about 74 years old .He is a very tall man because I am his daughter and 1.8 ft. If anyone know him , please make me know his name and his more details …..to chaleefunk@gmail.com ……Thank you so much
I loved when the 52 s were stationed at plattsburgh ny . we live about 2 miles from the end of the runway . when the a b52 would take off and fly over the my moms copper jello molds would shake & rattle on the wall . too cool fb11 were ok ,but they wern't THE BUFF. thank you all for doing your duty ! fly high !
I worked as a control tower operator [was a 20 year old kid] from Nov67-Nov68,and U-Tapao was hands down the best year of my life..Transferred to Misawa,Japan & worked w/ the FAA for a spell, but those tours couldn't hold a candle to my experiences at U-Tapao..I have designs of returning to the area this year.I would love to reconnect w/ my old Thai Navy tower counterparts before I arrive..Any brainstorms, please contact "david007mcdowell@yahoo.com". I have been looking for any footage of U-Tapao Royal Thai Naval Air Base, my first duty station when I enlisted as a teenager in the U.S. Air Force at the end of the Vietnam War. This sure brings back great memories. The building with the red roof cone is the base chapel. I lived on the 2nd floor of the barracks, had a house keeping clearn clothes and shin my boots. Was assigned to the Security Police Sq. Will never forget my First Sgt Detrick. Man of honor! I am still serving! Be Blessed!

Great video. Learned to sail there, still doing it. I keep looking for my BUFF tail number 56-075 I crewed. Anyone know what happened to it? Thanks for the Memories.
@tickwood1 Ssgt Fahl, First & foremost. THANK-YOU Sir for your service. I am at present attempting to assist you with the disposition of your B-52. As an Ex A.F. Maintenance Instructor,

LOL... Not quite. The dark smoke you see is caused by water injection. When the water was mixed with JP4 it created the extra thrust that was needed to get the fully loaded Big Boys [Buffs and Tankers] off the runway. Buffs took off max'd with a bombs with little fuel to get them off the ground. Tankers took off with a lot of fuel. They hooked up with the Buffs to provide more fuel for the range required for a mission. At times, we topped off buffs twice (out & in).
Was at U-Tapao from Aug 67 to Aug 68. 4258th BW. Went back in 2009 and visited the base and Satthip still the same not much has changed. Russians charter planes fly into U-Tapao for vacationers. Thai Airways has a maintenance base and the Swan Lake Hotel with the fading blue roof still there. Thank you for this video post. Brought great memories
u r a gr8 american! one night i was on my way for a BLT and heard CCW at the club. Amazed, went in and saw 4 skinny thais doing the songs perfect. But- where is newtown and the daily numbers? flew 2 buf tours and this vid is a memory "shack"!
This film is so COOL which brings back some very wonderful memories of a 21 old.
There are several shots with fellow bomb loaders as we were in MMS (Mickey Mouse Sq) Shots of the old barracks, the mess hall are still very vivid and the scenes at the beach which was right next to the wash out theater. The Scenes in Sattahip, I even saw the shop where I bought my future wifes' rings and tailor made clothing. I lived just off base in what was called "Kilo Sip Pat' in a bungalow I rented.
Arrived June 5, 1968 and departed June 5, 1969 POL tank farm just down the road from the Red Horse compound. Remembered the heat and the fact that we did not get much in the way of rain for that entire year. I had just crossed the end of the runway when the KC crashed in Oct. of 1968, will never forget that either. Mostly good times but hard work,
I was there TDY from McCoy AFB Fl. begiining in Sept 1969. worked the night shift in the FMS wheel and tire shop. I liked it because the military crap was secondary to getting the job done. The boom boom room YEAH BABY!!! 10 CENT BEER AND SMOKES . Got out shortly before the '52 went down near the base. Was good friends with the gunner. SAC really sucked stateside. Wear your hat, shine your shoes, blah blah blah!!
Most EXCELLENT video. I was there in 69 also, starting in July with MMS preload. Great film, great place, great friends and great tour. Wouldn't change a minute of it. Thanks for the memories. I have a few vids on You Tube as well about UT.
Great footage. I was there dec 72 to dec 73. Things had not changed much from 69. I worked out of 26 on the Buff side. Thanks for putting the footage together.
Great video. I spent a TDY in 1968 and a PCS in 1970 at U-Tapao and this film really brought back great memories! In 68 the barracks hadn't been built yet and we lived in hootches. One of the details that I had was clearing jungle out in the area where the barracks were to be built. The beach was a great recreation area to spend what little time off we had.
@gobigred71 , I was there June 68-69. I also lived in hootches (635MMS). I remember wooden pallets laid end to end to act as sidewalks between hootches and latrines. I think hootches were better than barracks. 6 guys to a hootch and all sides were screened. You could also personalize them. The theater also served as the chapel (until the new chapel was built). Had a beer garden close by with 10 cent a can beers. You could get high for 60 cents.
my Grandpah Jim Stroud was stationed there in 1964-66 ,he gave me his beloved "GO TO HELL" hat,or bush hat lol, still has the oversized pin on the top of it! ;D
I was there May 70 May 71, 462 bomb loader. Came there from Ellsworth So. Dak. 1st MMS Dec 1968 till May 70 loading Nukes on B-52s. After Thailand I went Wichita Kansas and worked on F-105 Valcan Cannons.
It is good seeing this Video, just wish there was more shots of bomb loading.
What memories. I was there in April of 1969 TDY from Lockbourne AFB in Ohio. I was crew chief on KC-3548. Flew 2 missions a day for 70 days. Hard work but good times when we off. Newland was a town I'll never forget.

USN P-3 crewman, sonar & radar was my job and a good one it was. I was there back in '73. Sweet duty.
Thanks for the video and hats off to all you troops that went in harms way and to the guys that kept'em flying. My Dad was SAC, I love the BUFF.
