@Soloiszt Clara thought Robert composed it as he was going insane--in a rare lack of judgment on her part, she forbade it being played for reasons of her own. What is strange is that she liked his cello concerto composed in that last semi-coherent year of his. They are both equally good. Go figure! It appears she could not listen objectively to this piece--thought it was 'incoherent'. Or maybe it being played would remind her of his last days & she couldn't tolerate that. Bad move.
According to the Clara Schumann's biography, when Robert died, she decided to eliminate a number of his works that she considered "composed under his state of delirium" or something like that. Their daughter Eugenie continued her mother's labor and kept this concerto among the "never-to-be-heard" from Schumann. But in 1937 the Nazi regime had banned Felix Mendelsohn and his production, and they needed a "new" German violin concerto. That's when this piece saw the light.
@TheEternaut There are times when a spouse can be a foe--especially when the composer dies first. This is a wonderful work--what was Clara thinking? I'll take Schumann in 'delirium' over many other composers at their best. His sense of poetry is incredible.
Why this magnificent concerto is not a central part of the reprtoire is beyond me. Listening to it for the first time here, in the sesitive performance of Bell, felt like I had been struck by lightning...and I have been listening to it at least once every day ever since. This is one of the greatest violin concertos, in par with Brahms and beethoven.
@NivHoffman Henrik Szeryng's recording of this concerto used to be the only one in the 60s & 70s .It' s good to see that the younger generation embraces this piece.Ever since I heard this piece in my childhood I have had a very deep affinity for it. I still go all delirious when I hear it today!
I LOVE JOSHUA BELL !

@NivHoffman it's very sensitive but beethoven, brahms, mozart, paganini concertos are the best for the violin
