There are ways most can avoid the cost of college and still get jobs, but it's never spoken to because so many are making money off the education myth. Frightening info. most people never know until it's too late and they are stuck with massive loan debt and no job. You have to know the REALITIES of what's happening out there. Dreams are good but they can be delayed if not eliminated without proper knowledge.
Education is way over emphasized. The majority of jobs DON'T require a college education and according Brian Mackey, GEI consultants, since '92' 60% of college graduates are now in positions that the Bureau of Labor Statists considers low skill, positions that do not even require a high school education. And what is rarely taught is the critical skills and attitudes needed for success. There is SO much missing from most degrees & the 25% cost increase in last 5 yrs is criminal
It is just something else to get you to spend money on. If you are incredibly aware of the real world at age 17 or 18 (almost no one these days), you would just get a regular job, nickel and dime everything, and save all your money. You will end up outdoing all those smartarses who go to college, then have to be slaves for the next 30 or 40 years.
My college degree was a good choice. It allowed me to get access to doors and advance in my field in ways that I would have never been able to had I not gotten my degree. I will agree though, that for most people it is a complete waste of time to go to college and that the money can be better spent elsewhere. The overwhelming majority of people who go to college do not graduate and walk away with only debt. Of the many that graduate, most get jobs that do not even require you to have a degree.
Don't go to college just because someone tells you too only if what you want to do requires college, like engineering, i want to do engineering and it requires college. But also if you do go to college because you want to do something make sure it's a good degree not some dumb degree like pyshcology (yea i spelled it wrong) or human development or history because those degrees aren't practical. But if you like doing that stuff, then all power to you but your not going to go far.
College is good if you major in something that actually trnslates into the real world. People graduate with a degree in History and wonder what went wrong! Accountants, engineers, etc. Ow that makes sense,
Of course, college isnt for everyone, and you can still be successful without it. However, to say that it is "useless" is just as ignorant as saying that it some king of golden ticket to success.
It is not what you know but who you know. I've seen thousands of engineering degree students struggle since they have no leads and connections. Don't get me wrong, some aggressively applied towards internships but thousands were rejected. Also, an engineer has to obtain a license, which is what these engineering courses are for. Thousands do not pass that exam. What then to do? Student Loan Payments are waiting.
Well, for example, I am an accountant and the pass rate of the CPA exam hovers around 48 percent. So if you go to school and just cpast through, you probably wont pass. However, if you go to school and do what you are there to do, (i.e. learn accounting) then you should be OK. So I have no sympathy foor people that go to school and then dont pass there licensing exams.
I was not talking about the CPA, I was talking about the engineering exam that has to be taken by engineering graduates. Either way, it depends on the individual and their student loans. It is all a ratio, their standard of living depends on their debt.
Some engineering curriculums (mostly mechanical and civil) require you to take the FE exam before you graduate. FE and eventually PE licensure are required for almost all engineering jobs that involve public safety or transportation. Its a safeguard for recruiters that says "this guy knows his shit and isnt going to accidentally kill anybody."
Also if you just pass no accounting firm will hire you. Where I live they want above a 3.3 gpa at least. You must also have a 3.5 in your accounting curriculum.
Well, Im lucky there, I have a 3.8 overall and 4.0 in accounting/finance courses. But where I live, that really isnt necessary. Pretty much everybody is getting hired who graduates from my school. Of course, all 4 of the big 4 are pretty close to here. Then again, I would be willing to move if thats what it took.
The big 4 will work you until you drop dead FYI. My buddy at PWC works over 80 hours a week during tax season. The big 4 are REALLY picky about who they hire. Have you taken the CPA exam yet? Have you interned?
I started my own bookkeeping biz, but I am not planning on working for the big 4, I was just saying that since they are here, there are a lot of accounting jobs available. I plan on working for the federal government (IRS) because I already served 9 years in the Marines so I only need 11 years and I can get a retirement check.
Well technically, being an accountant doesnt require a college degree either. Only if you want to be a CPA. However, my original point is simple. My college degree has opened a lot of doors for me that would not have been there otherwise. So it's stupid for somebody to make a blanket statement like "college is useless" I agree that a college degree doesnt equal an automatic job like some people seem to think it does, but all college degrees are useless? Not true at all.
Well, let me put it to you this way. I got my internship because I went to an event called "meet the firms" wherby over 20 local accounting firms came to my school specifically with the intent of hiring interns and staff accounants. So I would have to disagree with your take that my degree didnt help.
@Sooners7x Um, as someone with an accounting degree, you don't learn what you need to pass the CPA exam in under-grad. Most of what I learned to pass the CPA Exam I learned just memorizing the review materials. Also, being a CPA doesn't make you a good accountant
@avataz I never once said anything in any of my comments about college or the CPA exam making you a good accountant. What I said was that I was hired by a CPA firm and that it would not have happened had I not had a college degree. Further, had I not passed the CPA exam I would not have been retained. I have an accounting degree and have passed the exam. I took the Roger review and it was very helpful. I dont know about your school but a lot of what i learned in school was on the exam.
The FE exam has an 80% pass rate. Most of the questions that are on the exam have a single underlying concept. If you understand the concept, you will get the problem right.
College is good if you like to end up with a job wearing a tie and shoes that hurt all day. It does not mean that you make more money though. I make more money than a college graduate. I like wearing boots and tennis shoes to work. The economy does not always favor paper pushers.
Exactly. I know many people who only have a H.S. Diploma and are being paid around $13 an hour. I also know many poeple who have degrees and are being paid that amount, only difference is they have thousands of dollars worth of student loan debt.
I'm reminded of "The Prisoner" with Patrick McGoohan--but when No.6 was trapped in the Village, all they wanted was information. They didn't try to turn him into a parasitic host like they do to people in "The Matrix".
hmm, this will be interesting to see what this college matrix is about. I dont believe that one should get in debt in order to invest in oneself. My conspiracy quote for the day:"Beware the college crash is coming"

there should be similar anti-college ads
colleges are basically like corporations too
a lot of propaganda and marketing
in order to sustain their existence they have to convince you that you need them
they need sallie mae and sallie mae needs india

You make some what of a good point
In order to take the exam to become a CPA it does require an accounting degree
but the exams for an actuary require no degree
hmm
Actuary vs Accountant?

yea, jobs would rather you have 10 years experience even with no hs diploma over a PhD with no experience
5 years experience in the rare case you find an unpaid internship
Are you sure you did not know people to get in
pay people
were you in the military
i honestly doubt your degree has helped one bit
